AIBU to think of replacing all synthetic duvets with wool duvet?

Return2thebasic · 18/06/2022 21:22

I just paid £20 to the laundrette for cleaning a synthetic single duvet - 4.5 tog. (I do think they ripped me off to certain level because the duvet has a label "Made in France". And they don't have a fixed price list, all by feelings.)

Our household washing machine wouldn't be able to handle washing duvets. And if wool duvets just need sunbathing now and then but don't need to get washed, why shouldn't I replace all duvets with woolly ones? A Forgary single all-season one on sale costs £52 and I don't need to pay an outrageous amount of money to clean it.

Can someone provide good reasons against this idea please?

I haven't voted because I love my wool duvets (though I have the washable woollen ones) but can't work out why a launderette would charge more for something made in France?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/06/2022 21:30

If you can afford it, do so. Maybe an animal
charity will take the old ones.

sorry, I cannot think of a reason not too. (I love my wool duvet).

BeetyAxe · 18/06/2022 21:32

Don’t give your old ones to an animal chair out, see if your local charity shop
will take them. For what it’s worth I have wool duvets and they’re great.

Thanks for the tip, been thinking of buying a wool duvet for a while. Anyone tried wool pillows, how are they to sleep on? I like a firm pillow.

Terven · 18/06/2022 21:36

I did exactly that. Changed the family’s five duvets to wool ones. Love them, I never have a problem, so much better than synthetic. I’m allergic goose feathers so it made sense. I got mine from Dunhelm.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/06/2022 21:39

@Fulbe we have wool pillows. Baavet do them in different ‘firmness’ I have a hard and Dh has a medium. (I’m sure other brands are available!)
I find that you do need to give the medium one a more thorough bashing to plump it up …. It’s therapeutic..

Sapphirensteel · 18/06/2022 21:39

Look at Baavet , they have “seconds” tho I couldn’t see anything wrong with my wool duvet which I’ve had for about 6 years. Still look and feels like new.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/06/2022 21:44

YANBU. Love my wool duvet from Devon Duvets. They also do wool pillows, although I don't have one of those.

TheRoadToRuin · 18/06/2022 21:45

I wouldn't care what the label says my duvets get washed. Dust mites and human skin don't know what the duvet is made from. I have two wool duvets which I wash every year.
All the rest are synthetic and I find I can fit some in the washer but not King size 10 tog+.
I have two single duvets on our bed but DC beds have king size.
I used to just buy new and throw out the dirty ones because it's cheaper. However this year I have washed them in the bath. It's messy and probably not as good hut it freshens them up at least for a bit longer.

Ragged · 18/06/2022 21:50

I'm reading mixed things about washing wool duvets... I don't understand why they would never need washing. Do they naturally repel vomit etc.?

allboysherebutme · 18/06/2022 21:53

Buy a bigger washing machine, saves money in the end. X

mewkins · 18/06/2022 21:55

I have a wool duvet and just feels too hot and heavy. I prefer a light duvet and various other layers on top so I can control it better.

OP, you could take the duvets to a launderette and put them in the big washing machines there.

Also yes if your child vomited or weed on any duvet it would need a wash regardless of what it was made of.

Twillow · 18/06/2022 22:04

I have a lightweight one, it's great. I put a quilted throw on top in winter if it's really cold but generally it's fine all year.

greenacrylicpaint · 18/06/2022 22:04

if you have them already and they work for you then keep what you have.

you can get them washed at a laundrette once a year if your washer isn't big enough.

WoollyPillow · 18/06/2022 22:07

We have wool pillows and they’re absolutely the best pillows we’ve ever had. Just the right amount of bounce and support but also soft and ours can topped up or some taken out to suit.

We bought them from Greenfibres.com where you can buy a wool pillow already made up or an empty organic cotton pillow slip and a bag of wool, or anything from tencel to buckwheat, and then fill the pillow as much as you like. It is more expensive that synthetic but it’s ethically produced and a comfortable sleep is so worth it.

I would buy a wool duvet but we don’t have much space to air it regularly so I erred on the side of caution and bought a tencel filled one that can be washed.

Wool is awesome!

declutteringmymind · 18/06/2022 22:08

How does it do for allergies? Is it better or worse? I have a dust allergy.

3luckystars · 18/06/2022 22:10

I have never heard of a wool duvet! Are they just a thick poofy blanket? I’m off to look them up now.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/06/2022 22:11

@declutteringmymind we changed due to my asthma. (Part stress and part allergy induced). Asthma has been a lot more stable since even with the stress of moving house/a death/nearly a divorce thrown at me.
so I would say “great”!

DrNo007 · 18/06/2022 22:17

We have wool duvets and they are washable. We love them. Got them from Woolroom. We also have wool pillows but they have to be dry cleaned. We don’t have to do that often as we have thick pillow protectors, also from Woolroom. You can get different warmth levels of wool duvet.

BattenbergdowntheHatches · 18/06/2022 22:17

Love my wool duvet - DS has one too.

wool duvet and linen sheets etc for the bed is really forgiving of peri symptoms (ie night time power surges) too, if you need another excuse!

inappropriateraspberry · 18/06/2022 22:18

What has it being made in France to do with anything?

msbevvy · 18/06/2022 22:22

I wouldn't get one because I would be worried about moths. I still haven't got over a bunch of them making a meal of my beautiful cashmere coat.

violetbunny · 18/06/2022 22:22

We have a wool duvet. We use it in winter and it's very lightweight, I can easily fit it in our washing machine.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/06/2022 22:23

Surely you just wash a 4.5 tog single synthetic duvet in your washing machine at home?

I don't understand the issue. It probably didn't even cost £20 to buy so in the extremely unlikely event that it is damaged beyond further use, its still cheaper to replace than pay so much for it to be dry cleaned.

AllTheMonacles · 18/06/2022 22:24

Doesn't it get really hot?
