To dob in the engineer

I had a service engineer come to the house today to repair my cooker hood. He couldn't do it without lifting it away from the wall but he told me he had a bad back and needed to get another 'stronger' engineer out-this is now going to take at least another two weeks and I have already been waiting three weeks. So-do I complain about him or be kind and let it go? I'm ok with not using the hood but it's annoying that I will have to wait in again.

Just to add-I offered him some Ibuprofen but he declined 😂 - also I assume he told the company the truth about why he couldn't do it but I haven't checked.

Poor bloke. Good on him for not risking making his back any worse.

Headshothelp · 17/06/2022 18:54

You offered him painkillers to mask the damage he would do to his back moving your cooker hood?! Seriously?!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 17/06/2022 18:55

Why would you be 'dobbing' him in? Ask the company to send out someone competent to do the job.

terriblemistak · 17/06/2022 18:55

It's not really his fault is it. I'm sure his employer is aware of his back issues. But I wouldn't complain about him specifically no

bloodywhitecat · 17/06/2022 18:55

Dob him in for what exactly?

KeyWorker · 17/06/2022 18:57

I don’t see the problem? He wasn’t able to lift the hood down with his bad back so has arranged for someone else to do it, did you expect him to hurt his back further for your convenience?

SomeFuckingWizardry · 17/06/2022 18:58

Dob him in for following safe manual handling practices & not inflicting a workplace injury on himself and not potentially damaging a customers property if his back went and he dropped the hood / slammed it against wall? Riiiiight Biscuit

anon12345anon · 17/06/2022 18:59

He is absolutely ridiculous. If he can't do the job, for whatever reason, he shouldn't be at work - I would definitely speak to his company.

Not your problem - let them know you aren't happy....

Festivalpartygirl · 17/06/2022 18:59

The poor guy, he’s done a risk assessment, the cooker hood is too heavy, the appt booking people should be the ones you gripe at, and should have sent 2 engineers to begin with. So by all means complain but it isn’t the engineers fault.

SomeFuckingWizardry · 17/06/2022 19:01

Also - if he started and then threw his back out before completing the job and had to go on sick leave the other engineers would be even busier and you'd have to wait longer again. Catch yourself on.

CandleSchtick · 17/06/2022 19:02

No. I wouldn't complain.

worraliberty · 17/06/2022 19:02

You don't sound as though you're using the phrase 'dobbing in' correctly here.

If you mean should you contact the company and request another engineer ASAP after explaining the last one couldn't manage alone, due to his back then of course you should.

Why wouldn't you?

He's probably much better placed than you, to know how much heavy lifting he generally has to do on an average week.

SkirridHill · 17/06/2022 19:04

I wouldn't complain. The poor sod is working with a back injury. I get it's annoying for you having waited in all day, but I feel quite sorry for him.

hahaha great sarcasm

Geordielass1987 · 17/06/2022 19:06

@Stressofherregard i wasn’t being sarcastic in anyway. Good on him for not doing it if he’s got a bad back!!

HotHeatDays · 17/06/2022 19:08

Dob him in for following h&s rules. Sounds fab

Why would you think that was sarcasm?

After watching my dp in absolute agony with a back Injury barely able to get off the floor for 3 months, and having to spend our savings on private surgery so he stood a chance of keeping his job, yabvvu and you sound like a dick.

THIS!!! X20

tttigress · 17/06/2022 19:39

Erm, do you understand how companies work?

Your contract is with the service company not their employee. Why not contact them saying you can understand why the engineer could not complete the job today, but waiting another 2 weeks is a bit much.

They may then reply saying they have labour shortages, or they may change priorities for you.

Either way it is not "dobbing in".

(Or is their some massive backstory incoming about how you got this engineer?)

Leftbutcameback · 17/06/2022 19:42

I don't understand at all? The engineer did a dynamic risk assessment and worked out he couldn't do the task. Did you want him to hurt his back? Pretty sure his employer didn't. It's a massive cause of long term sick leave.

user1478112490 · 17/06/2022 19:45

He could barely walk up the three steps to my front door so I guess it was always going to be a problem once he decided it needed removing. It is only small and the electrician fitted it easily on his own. I'm not going to say anything-will just wait in and hope that the next engineer can do the job-only one is coming again.
