To think you don't take in a neighbour's parcel when you're going on holiday

Had a parcel (unexpectedly) arrive on Friday when I was on the school run. Neighbour accepted the parcel but left for their week-long holiday shortly afterwards. By the time I'd been made aware it had been delivered there, they'd already gone.
My parcel (fairly urgently needed as it was for a birthday that was yesterday) has now been locked in their house ever since and according to another neighbour, they're not due back until late tonight / tomorrow.
WIBU to thank them for taking it in but ask that they don't do it again if they're not going to be around for me to collect it. Or just smile, say thanks and nothing else?

Come on what are the chances of this happening again?

Smile, say thanks. They prob thought they were being helpful. We all fuck up sometimes, they were probably too busy packing etc to rem to put it somewhere safe for you or to alert the delivery driver that they will be away so can’t.

Its annoying yes but it really isn’t worth getting upset about. There may be times when you will be genuinely grateful that they can take a package in for you and haven’t just turned it away

Kochicoo · 17/06/2022 12:02

Just smile and say thank you

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 17/06/2022 12:03

This is very unlikely to happen again op. Just say thanks and move on

RainbowBridge21 · 17/06/2022 12:05

Smile and say thank you. I understand your frustration but getting arsey with them isn't going to help you and it'll only make things awkward.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/06/2022 12:06

How long after them accepting the parcel did you realise that it had been delivered there?

SammysGG · 17/06/2022 12:07

Just smile and say thank you. The chances of it happening again are very slim. Did they leave for their holiday the same day as they collected the package?

Comefromaway · 17/06/2022 12:08

YANBU

I took in a delivery for our neighbour (turned out they had expected delivery 2 days before but the courier was delayed) and because I knew we were going to be out all day and evening the next day texted them in case they needed me to leave it in a safe place or with a different neighbour.

BatshitBanshee · 17/06/2022 12:09

Shit happens. Just smile and say thank you. I expect they might have been flustered trying to leave for a holiday and did it without thinking. Doubt there was any malice involved.

About an hour. I got home from school run. No card from courier through the door. Made a coffee and logged onto computer and saw email from courier to say they'd attempted delivery and left with neighbour. I went straight over there but they'd already left.

Yes. They left within an hour of the parcel being delivered.

I’d chalk it up to shit happens. Busy neighbour about to go away, might have been in a work call or a teen answering door. Probably just took it and not thought.

oviraptor21 · 17/06/2022 12:13

They were not thinking. Hopefully they will be suitably apologetic when they bring your parcel over.

theemmadilemma · 17/06/2022 12:15

Smile and say thanks.

If it was in the last hour as they were leaving, I imagine thoughts were elsewhere and they just took it and didn't think. I can see myself doing this and 20 seconds later realising I did something utterly stupid.

ImpartialMongoose · 17/06/2022 12:20

Do they often take I'm deliveries for you? If so, they may have been teaching you a lesson. Otherwise it seems really inconsiderate to hold on to your package until after they get back from holiday. If it was me I would tell them to refuse the delivery next time as it would be more helpful to you as you could then rearrange delivery.

Itsbackagain · 17/06/2022 12:20

If you order something either stay in waiting on your delivery or select do not leave with neighbour or do click and collect etc. Likely if they were just heading off on holiday they could have done without being asked to take in your parcel.

redbigbananafeet · 17/06/2022 12:23

Don't start beef with your neighbour over a parcel.

BiscoffSundae · 17/06/2022 12:23

This is why I love that my delivery guy Leaves my parcels outside my door!

Weird post. OP could hardly not have done the school run and you don’t have to take a parcel for a neighbour. They could and should have said no or just not answered the door as presumably they weren’t expecting anything themselves.

That was my first thought too.

No. They've never taken one before. I rarely order online. Normally you get an email / text to say when it's going to be delivered so I can make sure I'm home. This was a 'we'll deliver in 2-5 days' scenario so not practical to have to stay in for all those days just in case. It was bad luck they came on the school run and if I'd known they were coming, I'd have left a note on the door for them to take to Post Office down the road.

Unlucky, you should have left instructions for the courier if you weren't going to be in

HangOnToYourself · 17/06/2022 12:35

Your neighbour is a bit thoughtless to do this, I've refused to take in a parcel when I knew I would be going out for a long weekend before for this reason, generally they can find another neighbour to.leave it with. Probably not worth the bad feeling to mention it tho.

AaaarghSchool · 17/06/2022 12:37

Yes. They left within an hour of the parcel being delivered.
That seems really weird. Are you 100% sure they have it?

It could have been falsely declared as being delivered because the delivery company didn't get round to it. Or lost or stolen. Especially as there's no card through the door.

Yes. I can see it in their porch!
