To think you don't take in a neighbour's parcel when you're going on holiday

Had a parcel (unexpectedly) arrive on Friday when I was on the school run. Neighbour accepted the parcel but left for their week-long holiday shortly afterwards. By the time I'd been made aware it had been delivered there, they'd already gone.
My parcel (fairly urgently needed as it was for a birthday that was yesterday) has now been locked in their house ever since and according to another neighbour, they're not due back until late tonight / tomorrow.
WIBU to thank them for taking it in but ask that they don't do it again if they're not going to be around for me to collect it. Or just smile, say thanks and nothing else?

I can see it in their porch!
did they leave the porch open so you could get it? Do they have an alarm 😂

when they get back, suggest you exchange phone numbers so you can text neighbourly things when you're away.

I’m in a minority here but I think your neighbours were disorganised irresponsible arses.

“Sorry, can’t take the parcel in this time” is all they had to say to the delivery guy and he would have found a different solution.

Flubber88 · 17/06/2022 12:47

I refused a parcel for next door a couple of weeks ago as I was literally leaving for the airport in half an hour and would be gone for 10 days. I explained this to Mr DPD and he got angry and aggressive and saying 'well I'll just have to take it back then!'. He just did not understand that if I took it in my neighbour would not have access to it for 10 days.

Taking a parcel in for someone and then going off on holiday within an hour is quite a weird thing to do! Are they quite thick?

BlanketsBanned · 17/06/2022 12:52

This is why I never accept neighbours parcels or expect them to take mine, its my responsibility to be in or leave clear instructions for a safe place. Perhaps they had more important things to think about and felt pressurised.

RestingPandaFace · 17/06/2022 12:53

I am sure they just weren’t thinking, and it’s annoying but not worth spoiling a neighbour relationship for.

Havent we all done things without thinking when we’re frazzled and rushing!

Badger1970 · 17/06/2022 12:55

Ours did this. I'd ordered a special outfit for a wedding that weekend as I'd tried my one on and hated it. Ndn's over the road took it in at 3pm, I got home at 5pm , and they'd already left to Greece for two weeks. Their cleaner had a key but wasn't there until the following week. I could have cried, and the annoying thing was that I'd left delivery instructions NOT to leave with neighbours.......

DogInATent · 17/06/2022 12:55

Just smile and thank them. They're probably just as pissed off at you for ordering something, not being in, and disrupting their holiday departure to take in a parcel for you after they saw you drive off not long before.

Alternatively, go for the full-on CF and lecture them on when to take in or not take in a parcel. I can guarantee they won't do it again.

SirenSays · 17/06/2022 12:56

This is the kind of thing my husband would do without thinking, trying to be nice. How annoying you can see it but can't get to it!
Posties around here look like you've insulted their mother if you refuse to take a neighbours parcel.

KangarooKenny · 17/06/2022 12:59

My neighbour is away for 2 weeks and in that time I’ve seen 3 Amazon parcels delivered. I took in the first two, the third I refused. People really do take the piss.

IfIhearmumagaintoday · 17/06/2022 13:04

OP your neighbours probably were rushing and trying to help you!

I'd don't know them at all other than a quick wave across the street but will assume they just lack common sense rather than meant any wrongdoing.

They would have been busy packing etc and just taken it in without thinking. No need to be arsey with them, smile and say thank you.

Jalepenojello · 17/06/2022 13:09

My house is manic before we leave for a holiday. Last minute packing, cleaning, tidying, emptying bins etc it probably didn’t even register with them. Just say thanks.

Next time set up preferences as to where you want your parcel to go if you aren’t in.

OompaLoompaa · 17/06/2022 13:10

Smile and say thank you.
Reorder if the item
is urgent and send the other one back.

oopsfellover · 17/06/2022 13:10

I think smile and say thanks- taking in deliveries can sometimes put you on the spot a bit and you say yes without thinking. Bloody annoying all the same.

MaggieFS · 17/06/2022 13:40

Normally in the last hour before leaving for holiday my brain is whirring at 100 miles an hour with a thousand things going on inside it.

We get so many parcels, at that time I would probably grab one, pop in down and leave it to deal with when I got back. They may not even have registered it wasn't for them.

Just say thanks. Chances of such a coincidence again are minute.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/06/2022 13:43

Smile and say thanks unless you want them to think you are a nob.

They just forgot, I imagine.

Also you weren't in / and presumably you didn't leave instructions to the delivery guy, so..

Bloodyhelldog · 17/06/2022 13:46

will assume they just lack common sense rather than meant any wrongdoing.

How generous of you 🤨

SquirrelRed · 17/06/2022 13:53

I can imagine this is something I would do, not to purposely annoy you but because I panic when the door goes and think I would just accept the parcel then kick myself afterwards.

burnoutbabe · 17/06/2022 13:58

What would have been the outcome if it's was say a perishable good?

By the time you get it it's ruined but you can't get any refund as it was delivered?

Wonder who is responsible then?

Donaldduck22 · 17/06/2022 14:07

Yabu, v easy mistake to make how were they meant to know you needed it urgently. Plus people have busy lives your parcel is likely not at the top of their priority list

choosername1234 · 17/06/2022 14:11

I really don't get MN sometimes.
This would really annoy me, I'm with you OP
