The dreaded name change

namechange106 · 16/06/2022 18:42

Hi all

im getting married in 5 months and I was going to make a start on changing my name with unimportant things like store cards and online retail accounts, but I’m not sure if any problems with arise from this? Everything else will take so long I thought I’d get a head start!

I have a few years left on my passport so was going to leave this in my maiden name, has anyone come across any problems doing this? I know passports are usually used for ID and it won’t match anything else once I change everything else. And Of course I would need to remember to book any holidays in my maiden name.
thanks 😀

It’s 2022. Why are you changing your name at all? Genuine question..

thelastshadowpuppet · 16/06/2022 18:46

I'd keep your name if I were you.

Sorry I'm not helpful.

Have a great wedding 💖

Grace185 · 16/06/2022 18:48

I'm changing my name next year when marrying the love of my life. I toyed with the idea or not changing it but came to the point where it doesn't mean you belong to your husband or obey him (taking all that stuff out of the vows too) but I want us to all be a family with our son and future children with one name and his name is nice :) can't help with the question but just saying people still do it even in 2022/2023Hmm

bakewellbride · 16/06/2022 18:48

I changed my name (shock, horror!) but didn't start the process until after I'd actually got married. All done in less than a year. I'd recommend waiting.

Maybe her own surname is something bad like Sidebottom or Growcock.

Perhaps because she wants to? The fact it is 2022 means that it is socially acceptable foe women to choose whether they change their name or not. Not that they have to stick to a rule someone else has made for them (whether that rule is to change a name or not).

theemmadilemma · 16/06/2022 18:50

I kept my maiden name on my passport for years but changed everything else. I'd had to renew it the year before.

I literally changed it about a year before we divorced. 😂

namechange106 · 16/06/2022 18:50

I know a lot of people don’t agree with name changing any more but it’s something that’s always been important to me and I like the tradition of getting married and becoming one unit and having the same name. And I like his surname 🙂

If it's a headache don't do it. I didn't change my name when I got married 22 years ago. Nobody has ever questioned if I am my children's mother and my children think it's completely normal that we have different surnames because it's what they are used to. Many of their friends have married parents with different surnames.

I don't understand why women change their name, it's a pain in the neck to do and if you get divorced you'll have to do it all again in reverse.

theemmadilemma · 16/06/2022 18:51

I never changed my name back to maiden and I'm going to do it all again in April when I marry. This time I'm changing everything including the passport to be rid.

But I never had any issues with the difference.

worraliberty · 16/06/2022 18:51

Oh good God, how did I know the replies would be all about the OP's personal decision? 🙄🙄

OP, you might want to check the legal position of using two names. I could be completely wrong, but I'm lead to believe you need to stick to one or the other where there are finances involved.

Not 100% sure though.

It's 2022. Maybe a woman wants to do what she wants to do!

JaninaDuszejko · 16/06/2022 18:52

Why do men with terrible surnames never change them when they get married?

ShirleyPhallus · 16/06/2022 18:52

The OP has said she wants to change her mind, it’s not very helpful for everyone to pile on and tell her that she shouldn’t. That’s the beauty of choice innit.

OP some stuff you should do all together - passports for example so your ticket matches your name but things like boots card it doesn’t matter for

No need to explain or justify OP.

Why is it dreaded then if you really super want to do it?

Viviennemary · 16/06/2022 18:56

I don't think I would start the name change process until after your marriage. That's what folk usually do.

Because it's a lot of admin I expect.

HumptyDumpty2022 · 16/06/2022 18:56

I’d only just renewed my passport the year before we married. It’s still in my maiden name, I sometimes need my marriage certificate for ID purposes it’s not all that troublesome. I’ll change passport when it’s up for renewal.

PugInTheHouse · 16/06/2022 18:57

I didn't change my passport as it had ages left, nor did my SIL. Never had any issues at all, just showed copy of wedding certificate if need be.

FuzzyPuffling · 16/06/2022 18:59

Don't change anything yet, in case something happens.

Why is it dreaded then if you really super want to do it?

Because I know changing your name is frowned upon on this site 😜

My SIL to be has a perfectly normal surname but has chosen, for very personal reasons, to take my DD's surname when they marry.

Don’t have to get married to change your name……
