Your child who is 12 or under is away for the night. They call you and say that the person in charge of them has left and there is an emergency they cannot handle. You have had a bottle of wine/or 4 fine/or 6 beers etc. There is no option of walking/taxi/ambulance/calling someone to help. Would you get in the car and drive to them? About 30 minutes away.

This is the weirdest thread ever. You are now saying it's a made up scenario? There would ALWAYS be another option. I would never drink and drive, it would never be acceptable

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/06/2022 21:31

Why would NONE of those services be available?

I parts of pretty advanced countries there is no 999. And in parts of the UK they may be limited by weather etc.

It's not that unlikely.

Siepie · 15/06/2022 21:39

After a bottle of wine I'd probably be less use in an emergency than the 12 year old would be

onewednesdayindecember · 15/06/2022 21:41

I wouldn’t drive after a whole bottle of wine, if you had a crash or knocked someone down your 12 year old’s circumstance would get a whole lot worse. As it’s a fake scenario I would just get in my teleporter which can be operated safely while drunk

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 15/06/2022 21:51

I guess in this imaginary situation where emergency services don't exist it's fine to drive since there is noone to enforce the law that tells you not to.

In real life? No.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/06/2022 21:55

No, you’d call the police, or a taxi company or a friend/neighbour

A thought experiment needs to be better thought out than this.

mrsm43s · 15/06/2022 21:57

The thing is, that if there was really no other options/no emergency services/no taxis etc, then no caring parent would put themselves in the position of not being able to safely drive to help their child, so they wouldn't drink in the first place.

So the whole question is basically a nonsense.

Jackanackanory · 15/06/2022 21:22

Well, if it’s not real I’d call Batman. 😉

Ah but in this scenario the batphone is out of order...

OneTC · 15/06/2022 21:57

Considering society seems to be on its knees I'd drink drive

And take my neighbours car

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 15/06/2022 21:59

It’s an imaginary situation. Teleportation, thousand yard boots, magic flying unicorns are all equally viable possibilities to driving.

Personally I’d fashion myself a friendly golem from mud in the garden and task it with retrieving the child for me.

I would call the non emergency police number, or as many of my friends and family as it took to find someone sober.

anyone saying they would drive is ridiculous

Naaaah, smelt your iron and stick a pumpkin on top…make yourself an iron golem…it can fight any of the zombies that are out and about whilst you ride it to your child

Holy cow, you’re right!

Galliano · 15/06/2022 22:09

There is a defence to drink driving of necessity/duress of circumstance. I don’t think it gets used a lot in real life. In law exams the question setters usually manage to come up with more plausible scenarios than this one to get students to suggest it.

Hutchy16 · 15/06/2022 22:09

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 15/06/2022 21:12

Why don’t we all just offer equally bizarre and unlikely scenarios?

What would you do if your child aged 12 or under (so they could be 2 🤷🏻‍♀️) has been abducted by creatures that may or may not be fairies? You’ve eaten a pork pie or 2 bags of crisps or an out of date pickled egg. You cannot call the emergency services because they don’t exist. Do you arm yourself with an iron fire poker and go to find the entrance to fairyland (c. 30 minutes away)?

actually giggled at this one

PotatoFamily · 15/06/2022 22:10

I know it’s not a serious question really but I’m chuckling at all you naive people who think there is an available emergency services option these days. There just isn’t.

My DH was involved in an explosion last year and almost died. The ambulance wait was ten hours! I had to wrap him in clingfilm and take him in the back of a neighbours work van, writhing in agony in the back.

Flipflopblowout · 15/06/2022 22:10

If you have had a bottle of wine then you should still be able to walk it, you would be sober by the time that you arrived.

SalmonEile · 15/06/2022 22:13

I would simply hop on my trusty magic unicycle that has anti alcohol transpositors installed and be on my way

why on earth would anyone do anything else

SalmonEile · 15/06/2022 22:14

@PotatoFamily i hope your husband is ok and recovering

RedHelenB · 15/06/2022 22:17

Darbs76 · 15/06/2022 20:44

No, in no circumstances would I drink and drive. If it’s an emergency call the police. If not get a friend to help.

This.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 15/06/2022 22:18

cantwontwouldnt · 15/06/2022 20:48

There is no police/ambulance/fire service. This isn't a real scenario by the way just curious.

Well, assuming you mean the UK, in what circumstances would there be no emergency services or a taxi/Uber etc? If you’re hypothetically talking a place where those things don’t exist - eg so remote they’re not realistic - I guess the drink driving scenario might also be unlike the UK, and if the unmanageable situation the minor was in was potentially life threatening - then yes, you’d drive. All a bit random though - why are you asking?

sheepandcaravan · 15/06/2022 22:19

Yeah makes no sense, my nearest police station is half an hour. My nearest neighbour is five minutes, lots enroute in either direction. I would be calling police first and neighbours next, to take me.
