AIBU to eat on public transport

I feel like I'm asking MN a lot recently but it's been v helpful recently!

So I'm travelling back home from the office and totally wiped out and for some reason my body was telling me I needed sushi. So I got a little box from some overpriced place at the station

And now I feel like I have to eat it in 2 mins flat as feel so self conscious eating it. I forgot how weird it feels eating in public. Its not smelly but I don't know.. is it acceptable to eat food on a train in the heat full of commuters? I'm doing it right now but I thunk perhaps AIBU.

What are your views? Eating on buses/trains etc?

Really gross to do this on a packed commuter train. A cereal bar is fine. Fucking sushi?!!!???

balalake · 15/06/2022 17:48

Trains yes, ideally where there is a table.
Buses no.

Legoninjago1 · 15/06/2022 17:48

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest as long as I could t smell it....and I'm often not the most easygoing person on a packed commuter train 😂

Moonshine5 · 15/06/2022 17:48

AIBU unless for medical reasons

Sexnotgender · 15/06/2022 17:49

It’s not great.

IRunbecauseILikeCake · 15/06/2022 17:49

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. We've all had one of those days where we have been flat out and haven't had a chance to eat.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 15/06/2022 17:49

It's sushi so unlikely to smell. As long as you don't make a mess, it's not encroaching on anybody else. It would BU if it was smelly food as others couldn't avoid it then.

Furrbabymama1987 · 15/06/2022 17:50

I always find myself staring at people eating out of nosiness to see what they've got, so I'd feel self conscious to do it myself. But at least it didn't smell. Nothing worse than sitting on a packed train and someone's eating some farty smelling chicken skewers.

RedCarsGoFaster · 15/06/2022 17:50

I couldn't give a crap. If I'm eating on the train, I've usually got a 5+hr journey and no other options.

Eat on the train. Sushi doesn't stink.

frydae · 15/06/2022 17:52

Food is served on lots of trains. Eat your food.

cushioncovers · 15/06/2022 17:53

Food is served on trains so go ahead.

rainbowandglitter · 15/06/2022 17:55

Wouldn't bother me at all

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/06/2022 17:55

If it's busy then YABU

If it's quiet enjoy

Lockheart · 15/06/2022 17:56

I mean I'd rather wait til I got home, but if it's not smelly, messy, or noisy, knock yourself out.

daisypond · 15/06/2022 17:58

Generally no. Bus - no. Small local train - no. Intercity train - OK. Basically, if the train has a buffet or trolley service, it’s OK. Otherwise no.

Clymene · 15/06/2022 17:59

Sushi doesn't smell. If it does, you shouldn't eat it!

Chazzagirl2 · 15/06/2022 17:59

As long as it’s not smelly or noisy food, and you won’t be elbowing the person next to you whilst you eat, I’d say it’s fine.

LtMoose · 15/06/2022 18:01

Once again, I didn't know this was so thing! Who knew it was frowned upon to eat on public transport

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 15/06/2022 18:02

I think this is fine as long as you are sitting down.

daisyjgrey · 15/06/2022 18:03

I only ever really use cross country trains (I would eat on these as long as the seat next to me was empty or had someone I knew in it) or the tube (I don't eat on the tube).

carefullycourageous · 15/06/2022 18:05

It is not good to eat something like sushi on a busy train/bus.

What is wrong with sushi that means you shouldn't eat it on public transport?

EcoEcoIA · 15/06/2022 18:09

Depends on what you eat and how confined the space is.
Many years ago I chewed a clove of garlic while breathing out through my nose (my aunt's cure for runny nose) on a packed commuter train into London Bridge. While I did get a little more space than usual, I don't think I'll do that again. Apparent garlic unacceptable, stinking armpits in your face fine.
The other week I was eating smoked mackerel out of the packet (better value than sushi) while walking down the street and getting funny looks, and thinking this is fine, don't judge me.

AmbushedByCake1 · 15/06/2022 18:11

Of course you can eat on a train. Loads of people do. Plus sushi doesn't smell so crack on!
