AIBU to eat on public transport

BitBehind · 15/06/2022 17:40

I feel like I'm asking MN a lot recently but it's been v helpful recently!

So I'm travelling back home from the office and totally wiped out and for some reason my body was telling me I needed sushi. So I got a little box from some overpriced place at the station

And now I feel like I have to eat it in 2 mins flat as feel so self conscious eating it. I forgot how weird it feels eating in public. Its not smelly but I don't know.. is it acceptable to eat food on a train in the heat full of commuters? I'm doing it right now but I thunk perhaps AIBU.

What are your views? Eating on buses/trains etc?

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest if people eat on public transport.

MissMaple82 · 16/06/2022 11:21

I wouldn't give two shits, eat if you need to eat! So many arsey types getting offended over fuck all

VanillaImpulse · 16/06/2022 11:24

Sushi is fine. Greggs pasty on the other hand...NO, NO, NO!!!

Fml1980 · 16/06/2022 11:25

Helpimfalling · 16/06/2022 11:26

Am shocked at how many people this would bother.

I'd probably smile at you and tell you your food looked nice.

Wouldn't bother me at all

I think the % of Mumsnetters it would bother is probably different from the % of general public transport users. I've lived in London and suburbs for most of my life. Frankly on the commuter trains going out of town in the evening, you often see people eating and nobody turns a hair unless it stinks.

abblie · 16/06/2022 11:46

Eat whatever you want whereever you want no one has the right to tell you otherwise especially people on mumsnet unless they own train or bus

iwishiwasonhol · 16/06/2022 12:03

i was on a 15 min bus journey the other week and a group of four people started having a full on curry ,they then left all the rubbish on the bus , i think you will be fine with sushi

KarmaStar · 16/06/2022 12:12

So long as you don't slurp crunch or gulp loudly you'll be fine.😀

User135644 · 16/06/2022 12:25

They wouldn't sell food on the train if it wasn't accepted, at least longer distance. If it's a short commuter train then maybe not

1000yellowdaisies · 16/06/2022 12:31

When i used to commute by train i always ate, it was practically built into my morning routine i ate an eat natural bar and had my coffee on the train... i also did my make up on there occasionally, which yes is naff...
But really i think it depends how packed the train is, obvs you wouldnt stand there chomping away if you were nose to nose with other people but if you had a bit of distance between you its fine

I love that some people are like OH MY GOD DISGUSTING, and other people are like 'do you even need to ask this of course it's fine' Demonstrating how un black and white it is. I actually think it's fine, but whenever I do it (e.g. when I'm really bloody hungry and tired) - I always feel I have to eat in a rush and half hide the food in my handbag and I don't really know why. Next time I'll whack it out with pride.

Spare a thought for the poor sods who may have been sitting near while you munched on your sushi. Eating on public transport, cinemas or any such setting is just gross and inconsiderate 🤷‍♀️

Spare a thought? WTAF Confused

How would other people be impacted in any way by someone eating sushi nearby? Just how?

why

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 22:01

While I'd rather not smell something very strong on public transport, ultimately I really don't care. People need to eat. No one sets out with the idea of having a meal on the bus.

Sushi is fine, it doesn't smell of anything.

Lunaballoon · 17/06/2022 20:08

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 21:59

why

Why? OK, I’ll concede a small pack of sushi might not be so bad, but as a regular traveller on London buses, I’d rather not have to put up with someone else’s noisy munching, slurping, rustling and food smells, if it’s ok with you.

I feel for the cleaning staff too who have to deal with all the crap that gets left behind.

SunscreenCentral · 17/06/2022 20:19

Honestly I really don't enjoy people eating on public transport. A bar of chocolate is fine.

Don't 'people eat' then, stick to your chocolate.

Comefromaway · 17/06/2022 20:37

Commuters often don’t have the choice. Dd has to eat on the tube when travelling between college and work otherwise she doesn’t get to eat until 10.45pm

I think on a big intercity train it's fine provided not smelly nor messy.

Less ok on a packed out train or bus.

Chouah · 18/06/2022 08:08

If it's busy, or you're elbow to elbow with someone, no.

Also, if you are a noisy eater, also no. (So, also don't wear headphones).
