Should I report him to the company?

I’ll preface this by saying I’m having the week from hell so I’m really not sure if IAMB or not.

I had to pick my daughter up from nursery today. Childminder has covid again, so I’m working and now I’ve got her for the afternoon too. I had half an hour between meetings so ran out, grabbed her, popped into the shop on the way home for bread and would make the meeting. Got out the shop and there’s a van parked, on double yellow lines, directly behind me. Engine is running, windows open, keys in the ignition. So I dawdled a bit, put DD in car seat and looked around to see if anyone was claiming the van. After nearly ten minutes, random bloke comes meandering across with a Greggs bag, waves a hand at me, and drives off. I know it’s only 10 minutes but I’m so pissed off. There was loads of parking, but this saved him walking a few feet and it’s so bloody selfish! While I was waiting, I took photos of his logo-ed up van (clearly on double yellows) with the intention of contacting the company. But now I’m wondering if I’m being a bit over the top? I’m just so pissed at the selfish stupidity of it (and also annoyed that he left the engine running and keys in the van!)

YABU- get on with your day and forget about it
YANBU- he’s an idiot and should be reported to the company for shitty parking so he learns not to do it again.

I'm saying YANBU but only because it happens near my local shop daily and it drives me fucking mad about the lazy, selfishness of it. So my opinion should probably not be taken too seriously 😁

DeeDumDeeDum · 15/06/2022 13:05

@HangOnToYourself im the same! I’ve seen people parking on the double lines so many times, but never been parked in before. I’m still annoyed about it an hour later!

Why did you stay OP? Was he blocking you from getting out? Sorry, it isn't clear.

LIZS · 15/06/2022 13:11

Yanbu. He also left the company property unattended although I guess he may own the van etc.

MrDaddybear · 15/06/2022 13:15

Don't be a snitch, surly you have more important things in your life to concentrate on?

Well yeah her job...but she couldnt get to it because he blocked her in...

How many important things do you have to be to not be able to spare 2 minutes to make a call or send an email? What about the 10 minutes of important things that couldn't be done as the OP was stuck in the parking space? it doesn't seem like a task that would mean important things would suffer.

DeeDumDeeDum · 15/06/2022 13:28

Sorry yes I was completely blocked in. I’ll try and do a diagram because I haven’t explained well!

@MrDaddybear yeah I do, I could have been doing them rather than sitting waiting for some random bloke to get his dinner.

Ducksinthebath · 15/06/2022 13:35

Report him if you were actually blocked in, if you could have left but were just aggrieved at shoddy parking, just leave it. Life's too short.

ilovelurchers · 15/06/2022 13:36

I actually think it would be a really horrible and irresponsible thing to do to report him OP (and you don't sound horrible and irresponsible at all, so I am sure that is why you are having second thoughts). You have no idea what the impact of making that call might be - the man might actually lose his livelihood! If he was a delivery driver for example, the rules governing them are very strict, and their working conditions completely appalling.....

Would you want someone to face financial hardship because they inconvenienced you for 10 minutes, with no malice whatsoever.

Has anybody reading this read the play An Inspector Calls? It's relevant - a young woman gets another young woman sacked for laughing at her in a shop - and ends up regretting it when she sees the impact it has on the sacked woman's life.....

I do feel very strongly about this actually (and I promise I am not the van man!) But please please please let it go - you have no idea what harm you may do otherwise.

YourSpleenIsDamp · 15/06/2022 13:44

If he'd left the keys in and the engine running, I'd have been tempted to get in and drive it out of my way!

Penguinsaregreat · 15/06/2022 13:45

If he was blocking you in then yes I would report. Otherwise no.

xILikeJamx · 15/06/2022 13:48

As @YourSpleenIsDamp - I would have got in the van and moved it

That's all well and good... but it wasn't a minor inconvenience for the OP... she needed to get back to work. How does he know that she wouldn't be fired and therefore suffer financial hardship for not getting back on time? He didn't know - or care - who he'd blocked in, he didn't care about the impact his actions had on her/the random person he'd blocked in, so why should she have more consideration?

That said, I'll not sure I'd necessarily bother complaining, but would have said something to him at the time.

But what if the op was also a delivery driver (some people do this in cars by me) and this mans acyions got her sacked, goes both ways doesnt it?

Lacedwithgrace · 15/06/2022 14:19

I report people who park/abandon vehicles like this because they usually cover blue badge spaces too and as double yellows are blue-badge friendly in most areas, people like him shouldn't be parked on them!

ilovelurchers · 15/06/2022 14:38

But he didn't do it knowing he might get someone sacked - that is the difference. He was thoughtless yes, but there is no evidence he acted in this way with the deliberate intention of causing OP problems with her employers. Whereas if she reports him she is doing that.

I dunno - it depends on your politics I suppose. I am of the opinion that the majority of employees at the level I suspect this guy to be as a van driver are not treated as well as they should be by their employers, given sufficient employment rights, paid enough money etc. So I would never go out of my way to get somebody into trouble with their employers unless they had really really seriously and deliberately wronged me, or I thought they were posing a risk to people's safety in some way.

DeeDumDeeDum · 15/06/2022 14:39

Hopefully this will work! I’ve done a diagram to try and explain. Yes he fully blocked me in, no he wasn’t a delivery driver, just a lazy ass who couldn’t be bothered to walk

Should I report him to the company?
OP posts:
DeeDumDeeDum · 15/06/2022 14:40

@ilovelurchers that’s the only reason why I’m considering not complaining to be honest. I wouldn’t want him to lose his job, just get a good bollocking about parking sensibly and legally?

OP posts:
DeeDumDeeDum · 15/06/2022 14:41

I did think about moving the van, and then hiding the keys in the van , but I’m not that brave 😬

OP posts:
steff13 · 15/06/2022 14:42

So the black square is you? Yes, I'd report him, I think.

balalake · 15/06/2022 14:43

Yes report to the company. Even if you use the grounds of someone could have stolen the van.

girlmom21 · 15/06/2022 14:52

I wouldn't report him. I don't see the point. If you were angry enough to consider reporting him you could have spoken to him. If you were right in front of Greggs there's a very good chance he'd have been in there.

It's irritating but I don't think it's worth getting him into trouble over.

girlmom21 · 15/06/2022 14:52

balalake · 15/06/2022 14:43

Yes report to the company. Even if you use the grounds of someone could have stolen the van.

If you're having to make up nonsense as to why you're reporting it you don't need to be reporting it.

If you think his behaviour is worth reporting, that's fine.

PurpleWisteria · 15/06/2022 14:59

Report the selfish git.
