Should I report him to the company?

I’ll preface this by saying I’m having the week from hell so I’m really not sure if IAMB or not.

I had to pick my daughter up from nursery today. Childminder has covid again, so I’m working and now I’ve got her for the afternoon too. I had half an hour between meetings so ran out, grabbed her, popped into the shop on the way home for bread and would make the meeting. Got out the shop and there’s a van parked, on double yellow lines, directly behind me. Engine is running, windows open, keys in the ignition. So I dawdled a bit, put DD in car seat and looked around to see if anyone was claiming the van. After nearly ten minutes, random bloke comes meandering across with a Greggs bag, waves a hand at me, and drives off. I know it’s only 10 minutes but I’m so pissed off. There was loads of parking, but this saved him walking a few feet and it’s so bloody selfish! While I was waiting, I took photos of his logo-ed up van (clearly on double yellows) with the intention of contacting the company. But now I’m wondering if I’m being a bit over the top? I’m just so pissed at the selfish stupidity of it (and also annoyed that he left the engine running and keys in the van!)

YABU- get on with your day and forget about it
YANBU- he’s an idiot and should be reported to the company for shitty parking so he learns not to do it again.

I would report him (and have done so in the past). I'd also put the photos on local Facebook pages to name and shame the company. There's far too much of arrogant tradesmen/van drivers around who don't give a shit about anyone else. Fair enough when there are no choices when they're doing their job, but far too often they don't even make an attempt to park sensibly without obstruction.

GoodLuckChuck · 15/06/2022 15:15

I'd report. I reported some workmen chucking rubbish out of the window, remembered the reg and Googled the name of the company - I was so cross

But he didn't do it knowing he might get someone sacked - that is the difference. He was thoughtless yes, but there is no evidence he acted in this way with the deliberate intention of causing OP problems with her employers. Whereas if she reports him she is doing that.

I dunno - it depends on your politics I suppose. I am of the opinion that the majority of employees at the level I suspect this guy to be as a van driver are not treated as well as they should be by their employers, given sufficient employment rights, paid enough money etc. So I would never go out of my way to get somebody into trouble with their employers unless they had really really seriously and deliberately wronged me, or I thought they were posing a risk to people's safety in some way.

He just didn’t give a fuck who he inconvenienced- how is that somehow better?

thelastshadowpuppet · 15/06/2022 15:20

I'd just get on with your life to be honest.

DontBlameMe79 · 15/06/2022 15:26

Definitely report him and hopefully he will lose his job. Maybe that will be a small lesson to these selfish, entitled men. And if it affects his livelihood, cry me a river.

I actually think it would be a really horrible and irresponsible thing to do to report him OP (and you don't sound horrible and irresponsible at all, so I am sure that is why you are having second thoughts). You have no idea what the impact of making that call might be - the man might actually lose his livelihood! If he was a delivery driver for example, the rules governing them are very strict, and their working conditions completely appalling.....

Would you want someone to face financial hardship because they inconvenienced you for 10 minutes, with no malice whatsoever.

Has anybody reading this read the play An Inspector Calls? It's relevant - a young woman gets another young woman sacked for laughing at her in a shop - and ends up regretting it when she sees the impact it has on the sacked woman's life.....

I do feel very strongly about this actually (and I promise I am not the van man!) But please please please let it go - you have no idea what harm you may do otherwise.

This is all a bit dramatic.

Hobbesmanc · 15/06/2022 15:31

I'd be totally fewmin...But I tend to calm down quite quickly and I probs couldn't be bothered with reporting.

But I hate people who go on about snitches and grasses like they adhere to some kind on mafia code. If you feel strongly follow your own instincts.

AquaticSewingMachine · 15/06/2022 15:38

If I were the employer, I would for sure want to know that he a) broke the law (running your engine while parked is an offence) and b) put company property at huge risk of being stolen so he could get a sausage roll.

Hurstlandshome · 15/06/2022 16:00

Would be annoyed too. God knows what he was doing in Greggs for 10 mins, was it super busy?
He's obviously just chanced his luck and thought he'd get in and out before you returned. It is selfish but I wouldn't report him.

DeeDumDeeDum · 15/06/2022 18:48

Seems like a pretty even response here, half for and half against, not what I was hoping for 😂

Why is it her responsibility if the guy does something so thoughtless he should face the consequences.

Don't be a snitch, surly you have more important things in your life to concentrate on?

pretty much sums it up
