Why are you being so eggy?

AIBU to hate this term? Whenever I'm angry at something DH says this (eggy meaning on my period). He seems to think the only excuse for being angry or stressed is that I am on my period. It is so condescending.

OP posts:
Hapoydayz · 15/06/2022 00:26

I used to say eggy at school, had no idea it was related to periods. If a boy was getting annoyed then eggy would be chanted at him. But yeah if your dh means it some other context he’s a dick

thelittlefox · 15/06/2022 00:07

Used to say this at primary school, SE England. Everyone would shout "Eggy eggy eggy! Oi oi oi!"? when a scuffle kicked off in the playground. I can't see how it would be related to periods in that context?

(Honestly, it was a nice village school. Home counties)

Oggy Oggy Oggy Oi Oi Oi I've heard of. I've heard it at football matches before and my Mum once told me it was something to do with hungry miners.

Scurryfunge12 · 15/06/2022 00:32

🤮🤮🤮🤮 that term is so horrible! I also can’t stand men who blame everything on a woman’s period as if they’ve done nothing wrong, it’s just her! It seems so self important, dismissive and misogynistic. Vile. I’d leave someone who thought the term ‘eggy’ was acceptable.

Disneydatknee88 · 15/06/2022 00:07

No he really means eggy as in the egg has released itself. It is an old school derogatory term. I don't have to be on my period to be riled up by him. He is annoying and he prides himself on being annoying like he finds it funny to do it and then says I'm "eggy" when I react. I don't know if this is relevant but he is the youngest brother of sisters and he has never stopped being the little annoying brother!!!

He’s a misogynistic arsehole. I think you need to stop minimising that before you produce sexist sons and self hating daughters.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/06/2022 00:44

Why are you married to this obnoxious, misogynistic fuckwit?

SusieSimpleman · 15/06/2022 00:46

Urban dictionary says:
When someone is being annoying, giving you dirty looks or is simply being rude for no reason, you call them 'eggy'
Teacher: says assignment
Me: what do we have to do?
Matilda: ugh Zoe you should've listened
Me: can you stop being so eggy

Same context that DH uses it in.

Nothing about being related to periods, women, an egg being released that I can see online. Seems that the op is the only one who knows the alternative meaning...

Ohtoberoavingagain · 15/06/2022 00:49

Whether he’s saying aggy or eggy he sounds like an annoying, immature twat.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 15/06/2022 00:53

Never heard this expression but going by what other pps report about regional usage, I’m going to guess that it doesn’t actually mean that to anyone else, and that he has learned the expression and back-defined it in his own head to mean that.

Which would suggest he’s a sexist prick.

Nouveaunew · 15/06/2022 00:53

@Disneydatknee88
You asked if you were being unreasonable to hate the term ‘eggy’ being used by your partner who you describe as an annoying little brother …

do you get painful periods? I’m awake with period pain on Day 5. If someone mocked rather than supported me for what is quite difficult every month, I think I’d feel very very very hurt

stuntbubbles · 15/06/2022 01:35

Explain to him that the egg is released around ovulation which is when you’re eggy. It’s long disintegrated by the time you’re aggy with him being a prick.

NorthernLights5 · 15/06/2022 01:44

Goodness me what century is he from? We should be long past the days of blaming women's emotions on their menstrual cycle.

I'm not usually a ltb type of poster but there is no way I could even be friends with, let alone in a relationship with, such a mysoginistic person.

I can't decide what is more disgusting, the term he used or him.

So he knows literally nothing about female biology then? Tell him a period is the opposite point in the cycle to when the egg is released!

ChompChamp · 15/06/2022 02:02

I’d never heard the term, but lots of places online say it’s British slang for ‘slightly annoyed’. The only etymology suggestion I can find is that it derives from ‘aggravated’ though.

Of course, whatever the actual etymology is, it seems your husband is deliberately referencing your menstrual cycle in a deliberately demeaning manner.

bozna · 15/06/2022 02:11

Men are very shitty sometimes, but my son is about to leave primary school and they haven't done any sexual health / development talk at all yet. I've explained stuff, but girls are developing younger now but how are boys supposed to act with any maturity when the school doesn't give the boys a Chance

Underroad · 15/06/2022 02:58

My friends from Derbyshire used to use this term to describe someone being in a mood. I assumed it was just regional slang. They were kids so I doubt it would have related to periods.

So you know it's an "old school thing" but think it's related to ovulation or hormones or something? Did he tell you this himself or is this your interpretation because one of you has it wrong.

girlmom21 · 15/06/2022 05:42

He doesn't sound intelligent enough to use an ovulation-based insult because he clearly doesn't understand human emotion.

OMG I remember that! Also at a nice little village school. In Berks. <side eye>

Velvian · 15/06/2022 06:27

I also remember 'eggy' being used, not related to periods.

If my DH even uttered the word eggy I'd LTB, the sound of the word makes my skin crawl.

Pelt him with eggs every time he utters it.

Gusfringrules · 15/06/2022 06:33

PurpleButterflyWings · 14/06/2022 23:46

Don't you mean AGGY? (Like aggravated?) Never heard of EGGY.

Or he could mean edgy
Or that he understands a priod is the shedding of an unfertilised egg and the prepared lining of the uterus....

Gusfringrules · 15/06/2022 06:35

i've never heard aggy except here (nor pass agg either).

Shoxfordian · 15/06/2022 06:37

He sounds like a knob
Why did you marry a misogynist?

Eerm, no! Before I read rge OPs explanation and your response, that was my first thought (along with remembering that my nan told be if you are too many boiled eggs you would be 'egg-bound'!
So it's quite logical, even if you cannot find the etemology

Only on MN would people focus on terminology rather than the issue Grin
