Not an AIBU but I've seen SO many posts recently about passports and renewals and thought others may want to know how quick passport renewals can actually be at the moment.

Applied for renewal online 17th May
28th May old passport posted off
9th Jun emailed that it has been approved
13th Jun told it has been printed
14 th Jun- today- it arrived via a woman in a high vis jacket who took a picture of my house before delivering it!

Mine is an adult renewal, so I assume this is fairly straight forward as no name changes etc.

OP posts:

Mine is 10 weeks and counting.

Throughtheroof · 13/07/2022 16:47

Mine was exactly 3 weeks, received last weekend.

5foot5 · 13/07/2022 17:34

Interesting. I did my online application yesterday, 12th July. Also put my old passport in post, signed for delivery. Got a Royal Mail tracking message this morning to say passport had been delivered. Then later a message from HMPO acknowledging they gave got it. Now the wait...

Mine took exactly a week from posting it to receiving the new one (this week).

And this morning, 14th, got an email to say it has been approved and is now being printed!

And the new passport has just arrived today (15th). That is 3 days from submitting the application to receiving passport.

Beat that!

Even in days of yore before all the currently reported woes I would have been astonished by a 3 day turnaround.

I applied online and used one of those Photo-me booths to take the digital photo then used the code to upload it with the application. Sent my old passport in with Royal Mail signed for delivery. Don't know if any of that makes a difference or maybe I am just lucky.

MrsPnut · 15/07/2022 09:34

Can’t beat 3 days but submitted DD’s renewal on 25th June, sent the passport on 27th recorded delivery. Marked as received on 30th.
Passport approved on 12th July but that was also her 16th birthday and we were applying for an adult passport, received on 13th July.

Mamai90 · 17/07/2022 02:29

My DDs first passport was applied for on 13th May and its still sitting on documents received. In fact about 2 weeks in it moved to processing and then back to documents received, no idea why! Saw that @bizzey had the same issue, did you get your passport eventually?

We go in 4 weeks time and now I'm really starting to get anxious. It's been almost 10 weeks.

The Irish passport office is no better, I applied for DDs at same time as British one to cover all bases and it was estimated to be sent the 7th July and no luck. Same with nephews, his was due 29th June but DHs renewal took 5 days.

Absolute shambles

Mamai90 · 17/07/2022 02:32

@Broadswordcalling @bizzey Did the passport agency ever explain why the applications had gone backwards? I actually thought I was losing my marbles and had imagined that I read that DDs was processing and then went back to documents received. Now I know it did happen! Did your passports come?

Broadswordcalling · 17/07/2022 08:25

@Mamai90 yes I received this off them "The online tracking status has been changed and now only goes from documents received to passport approved (unless any further information is requested). As a result some peoples trackers went backwards with this adjustment. It has no affect on the progress of the application." On web chat.

10 weeks on Tuesday. Not received. Fly on 3rd August. Absolutely nightmare.

Ontomatopea · 17/07/2022 08:28

Then why is it taking other people's so long? Such an unfair system.

Porcupineintherough · 17/07/2022 08:44

13 weeks and we received the passport (had to go to the office in person) at 11.47am for a 1pm flight. He missed the flight.

Mamai90 · 26/07/2022 19:33

Did you get your passport @Broadswordcalling? My DDs is still sitting on documents received and its been 11 weeks. Absolute joke, trying to get someone to call you back is impossible and most haven't got a fucking clue, they sound like they've been sleeping.

We got in touch with our MP and it finally may have got the ball rolling as someone rang us today. If you haven't got your passport yet I'd recommend doing that, seems the only thing that's worked for is but until I have the passport in my hand I don't trust them. We go in just over 2 weeks.

NoMoreLifts · 26/07/2022 19:49

IN early July mine took one week. Got photos done at Timpsons (sp?), filled in code and sent off old pp on Tuesday, new pp back following Tuesday. Old pp a week later. Updated via text all the way.
Fantastic!

Countdown2023 · 26/07/2022 19:52

Just arrived today - about 10 days for my renewal

Hey @Mamai90 so today.. today we have gone from ID received on 10th May (same day as the application so 11 weeks) to passport printed. I have phoned and emailed over and over. Fly in 8 days. Apparently it should be in my hands in 48 hours. Fair to say it's been traumatic. Until it's in my hands I won't be happy. I am however drinking much red wine tonight in some sort of celebration/still terrified mode. It's been shit.

I would highly recommend "passport chaos 2022" on Facebook to anyone who's a bit lost. It's been a saviour!!

Broadswordcalling · 26/07/2022 20:46

There is a massive black home for May applications, certainly PEX 356/357 are affected

Darbs76 · 26/07/2022 21:05

There’s over half a million in the system. Some are pretty quick, leading to some people saying it’s all media hype, but it definitely isn’t. Problem is people are booking holidays and then chasing up their passport when it says not to do that as can take 10wks. Costing a lot of money for their MPs etc to chase up / causing more problems

Darbs76 · 26/07/2022 21:09

@Ganymedemoon - 1000% express service.

Bumblefuzz · 26/07/2022 21:12

My adult renewal with name change took 7 days to arrive from receipt of my documents. My DD renewal took 12 weeks, MP letters and a sacrificial one way flight to Dublin.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 26/07/2022 21:16

I applied 4th may. It took 11 weeks, got it with a week to distract before we go on holiday 😅.

Peccary · 26/07/2022 21:29

It's a shambles. I only got mine as once the 10 weeks passed, I emailed every address and my MP. I had it in my hand 2 days before i needed to travel (12 weeks it took) . It is not people leaving it until the last minute, people renewed in good faith based on the government claim of up to 10 weeks. The helpline then told people lies such as 10 weeks is a guide, the 10weeks starts when we acknowledge receipt (even though this could be 2/3 weeks after it was signed for)

Peccary · 26/07/2022 22:11

I'd also like to add that I only renewed mine because nobody could clarify what constituted a valid passport for the EU back in the spring

MissGlitterSparkles · 04/08/2022 20:05

3 working days here! (Sent on Saturday, received passport through the post on Thursday morning). Unbelievably quick service - am genuinely shocked and delighted!

Teateaandmoretea · 04/08/2022 22:38

We still don’t have it back from April. It’s been expedited now so fingers crossed….
