A&E or wait to see the Gp??

Have posted a few times about this issue, I should probably change my username as my details are now probably quite outing but I've kept it the same so people can see the previous issues!

Short version of backstory is that DD (5) has been poorly every few days since Feb which was when she got admitted in to hospital with stomach pains and vomiting. Eventually needed a drip and was told it was some sort of gastroenteritis. Since then she has been on antibiotics almost constantly for different things, tonsillitis, urine infections etc. She can't seem to go more than 5ish days without coming down with something else.

Things ramped up 3 weeks ago when she got another urine infection. Temp went to the highest it had ever been (41+), got put on antibiotics and after a couple of days seemed to be getting better. However she then developed severe diarrhoea, going up to 15 times a day and it was just fluid, sometimes had blood in it. That has continued and is still going on.

Gp agreed to do a stool sample and also referred for bloods to see if there is a reason she keeps getting poorly. Stool sample has come back negative for c diff, gastroenteritis and anything else they tested for. She is booked in to the hospital for bloods tomorrow.

Here's where I'm not sure what to do. I picked her up from school yesterday and as soon as we got home she started screaming and crying saying her stomach hurt again, she was literally lying in the foetal position and said she couldn't move. Gave her some calpol and rang Gp to let them know it was happening again. They have booked us in for a face to face appt this morning. Since then she has developed a really high fever and is still crying with stomach pain.

Should I wait and take her to the Gp this morning or should I just take her up to A&E so they can see how bad she is getting and hopefully find the cause quicker? I don't want to waste anybody's time but I'm also at the end of my tether and just want somebody to help her.

That's great, hope there's a cancellation soon as 6-8 weeks is a long wait in her condition

justasking111 · 23/09/2022 09:20

They may want to reduce the infection before operating. But glad things are progressing

Weefreetiffany · 23/09/2022 09:22

Shame on the doctors and nurses that let it get to this point. My heart is broken for the lack of care your daughter and you have received. Well done for fighting so hard, I’m so sorry you had to. Please name and shame the hospital and ward and let me know if I can write to both the hospital and your mp on your behalf.

Feetupteashot · 23/09/2022 09:31

Tonsillectomy isn't needed for most kids but sounds like she won't get much respite until it's done, poor lamb.

Did they ever offer steroids for tonsillitis? Sometimes given in adults but unsure if kids benefit

If many utis then usually would get a routine kidney scan at some point.

Hmm?

rhowton · 23/09/2022 10:32

The tummy ache sounds like it could be Gallstones or her gallbladder.

I am so sorry you're going through this.

Yes because my DS has severe asthma and has recently only just got over a serious chest infection. It sucks in our house hold right now. Thanks for trying to make me feel even worse. Not quite sure why I would needed to have mentioned about my DS on this thread as it has nothing to do with him. Luckily most people on here aren't so unkind.

Well I'm sticking around for updates, as I've spent my whole life being ignored by GPS and medical professionals so I know only to well how hard you are having it right now.

And his ears

and “other strange symptoms”

and chicken pox

many threads op. About both children. Lots of different pains, green vomit, ear infections… it’s endless

Little kids get sick a lot with a whole host of different illnesses. Why this has anything to do with what's happening to OPs DD and the medical negligence that has been happening here I have no idea.

On the back of what your said, I had a look. It's not endless at all 🙄

Most there have been about the ongoing issues for this little girl, that aren't being resolved, with about 3 others (chicken pox, ear infection, asthma).

That's not suspicious, and even if it was, how about pressing report and let MNHQ decide rather than going on an (unjustified) troll hunt.

It may be that this mum seems support from MN when concerned about health issues.
It may be that she has some health anxiety
It may be that the doctors need to actually resolve this little girls difficulties rather than fobbing her off.

ohnoohnoo · 23/09/2022 12:37

@Doingprettywellthanks yes it is. Thanks for
Pointing out how stressful it is having two children who get poorly a lot.
And yes I admit I have health anxiety.. can anyone really blame me after how much they have failed my Dd so far??
Yes I've had multiple ear infections with one, he's currently awaiting an appt to see if he needs from it's due to these.
We've had plenty of different coloured vomits because of the medication they are on.
Would you like full medical history's for both of them?
Please remove yourself from my thread. I'm currently sat on a childrens ward with my sleeping DD and I don't need your nastiness involved.

Well I had one sickly son. We had eleven years of back and forth, nebuliser, inhaler, hospital. He's a prop forward now built like a tank. His grandfather lost one lung use as a child, one of his children has problems. So genetics I suspect in our case still win out. My OH had case after case of tonsillitis culminating in quinsy, it was the isolation hospital back in the day for this.

You're being unkind because family problems are passed down sometimes. No-one wants a sick child

A very foolish post.

The girl has been on antibiotics for a year! do you know what that does to her immune system? The immune system is largely located in the gut and antibiotics destroy both good and bad bacteria. They are in a cycle of ill health which won't be rectified until the tonsils are removed and even then they will have a battle on their hands to get her back to normal.

And asthmatics suffer worse from chest infections.

None of the OP's concerns are far fetched at all, especially when you take into account the state of the NHS.

I mean this as gently as possible, but perhaps engage a little common sense before you leap in to a thread making up theories to undermine a desperate mother. She's asking for help. Trying to portray her as unhinged because you have an overactive imagination is really unkind.

JanuaryParty · 23/09/2022 13:02

Just read this thread, your poor poor DD and also poor you!

My DD has had her tonsils out and honestly it was life changing for her. Sounds ridiculous but it was, really hope it's the same for your DD.

When you have kids that are unwell a lot I think health anxiety is pretty common. Just remember you are doing everything you can for her and your DD is really lucky to have you

Hope you're doing ok OP. Must be tricky to juggle it all, especially with having your younger DS and a relatively newborn baby too.

Definitely must be some confusion with this one as I only have DS and Dd, I don't have a baby.
And yes I've always been open that I've posted before. I have changed usernames with them as this one in particular is very very outing, everyone who knows my family knows of this situation and would easily identify me so sometimes I change my name on other posts if I don't want all my details being known

Apologies, someone with an extremely similar username to you! I did think you were superwoman dealing with all this and a baby.

hows DD this morning? Hopefully the IV antibiotics are helping now.

Wheresthebeach · 23/09/2022 14:19

Glad your DD is now on the surgical list. Its awful how bad things have to get before you get attention. Constant antibiotics aren't good for anyone.

Soubriquet · 23/09/2022 14:30

I didn’t realise it was impossible to have children sick at the same time! Amazing!

Sorry Op. I hope your dd is feeling a little better after getting what she needs

ohnoohnoo · 23/09/2022 14:36

Thanks everyone. We have just been discharged as they are happy that her infection markers are coming down and she is now able to swallow. She's got a dose of very strong antibiotics for a week and we will wait to get the letter with the appointment. We've also been given 48 hours access to the ward so we can take her back if anything changes.

Thank you so much again to everyone who has been really helpful during the stress of this situation. Hopefully we are now going to finally be getting to the other side of it!

Great news!! Hope little one is better soon and gets those pesky tonsils out soon! Hugs and love to you all, you’ve been through quite the ordeal! Xx

SummerHouse · 23/09/2022 20:08

This has been like a horrific marathon but you are on the final mile now. Well done OP. I, and I am pretty sure an army of others here, will be supporting you on the final straight. Sending you strength and good thoughts. You are nearly there!
