A&E or wait to see the Gp??

Have posted a few times about this issue, I should probably change my username as my details are now probably quite outing but I've kept it the same so people can see the previous issues!

Short version of backstory is that DD (5) has been poorly every few days since Feb which was when she got admitted in to hospital with stomach pains and vomiting. Eventually needed a drip and was told it was some sort of gastroenteritis. Since then she has been on antibiotics almost constantly for different things, tonsillitis, urine infections etc. She can't seem to go more than 5ish days without coming down with something else.

Things ramped up 3 weeks ago when she got another urine infection. Temp went to the highest it had ever been (41+), got put on antibiotics and after a couple of days seemed to be getting better. However she then developed severe diarrhoea, going up to 15 times a day and it was just fluid, sometimes had blood in it. That has continued and is still going on.

Gp agreed to do a stool sample and also referred for bloods to see if there is a reason she keeps getting poorly. Stool sample has come back negative for c diff, gastroenteritis and anything else they tested for. She is booked in to the hospital for bloods tomorrow.

Here's where I'm not sure what to do. I picked her up from school yesterday and as soon as we got home she started screaming and crying saying her stomach hurt again, she was literally lying in the foetal position and said she couldn't move. Gave her some calpol and rang Gp to let them know it was happening again. They have booked us in for a face to face appt this morning. Since then she has developed a really high fever and is still crying with stomach pain.

Should I wait and take her to the Gp this morning or should I just take her up to A&E so they can see how bad she is getting and hopefully find the cause quicker? I don't want to waste anybody's time but I'm also at the end of my tether and just want somebody to help her.

I'm so sorry you and your daughter are going through this. I really hope that this time they have more compassion and efficiency to finally sort this out for you both.

For what it's worth, I think you sound like the most amazing mum. Flowers

Just been triaged. The nurse rang straight through to Ent and they have asked for her to be put on IV antibiotics and steroids, they are also taking some blood tests and then they are going to get an EnT consultant to come and review her once we have the blood tests

At long last some action! I cannot believe your poor DD is still suffering of something tang could be an easy fix.

WestIsWest · 22/09/2022 23:09

Good luck OP. I hope they operate tomorrow and she feels better very soon! 🌸

Boopeedoop · 22/09/2022 23:12

My goodness, your poor daughter, and you. Please keep us updated. X

doesthatmakesense · 22/09/2022 23:15

I really hope that you get proper care very soon, you must both be completely exhausted. I hope you can both get some sleep, and will be thinking of you both.

anderosonnmj · 22/09/2022 23:19

Sorry to hear about your daughter being so unwell. I haven't read through all of the comments, but have you tried contacting your MP?

moneymortified · 22/09/2022 23:23

This is so scary, you’ve done so well for her though. I’d really recommend keeping vigilant on sepsis even now she’s in the hospital, you can’t trust nurses and doctors to always notice infection in my sad experience.

justasking111 · 22/09/2022 23:33

You've both been through so much @ohnoohnoo I think a mum on here point blank refused to go home when things got really bad with a family member.

Just today on another thread posters admitted to granny dumping because nothing was being done for their parents.

TimeForTeaAndG · 22/09/2022 23:35

Have only just come across your thread, OP and I'm so angry that this has gone on for so long. I hope your DD feels better in the morning and they hurry up with getting the tonsils out.

I went through a year of recurrent tonsillitis about 7 years ago and it was horrible. I was referred in the July I think and got them out in the December. Since then I've barely been ill (apart from Covid this year).

Wishing you and DD well.

Goingforarun · 22/09/2022 23:36

You and your daughter sound amazing. I had my tonsils out back in the 50s never looked back. Good luck

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 22/09/2022 23:42

Grumbling appendicitis. My son had it for ages. Ended up bursting and he was really ill obviously at the time but he's been fine since. Surgeon said they could see where it had kept getting inflamed but they had a question mark over it as they still don't know if it's a real thing. It should get inflamed and burst not keep getting better. My son wassounwell for such a long time. He spent tso much time in agony. They thought he had crohns disease.

TrashyPanda · 22/09/2022 23:50

Hoping they finally do something

thaegumathteth · 22/09/2022 23:58

This had dropped off my threads I'm on for some reason.

I cannot believe your Dd is still so unwell. Poor wee thing and poor you too, you must be absolutely exhausted and overwhelmed.

Has she ever been tested for glandular fever? I had it as a teenager and for months after I got tonsillitis , they also thought I had quinsy at one point.

I really hope you both get the help you need and deserve tonight.

ohnoohnoo · 23/09/2022 00:01

We've just seen one of the ENT team, they couldn't fit a cannula so they are getting her a bed on the paeds ward and will get them to fit it there. They will then do the antibiotics and steroids. Then he has arranged for one of his team to come and see her tomorrow rather than waiting for our appointment next Wednesday and he said they will give us a date tomorrow to bring her in and have her tonsils out. Obviously I don't want to get my hopes up as we've had drs promise us things before and then changed but I'm hopeful that this may be the first step to getting them out!!

Make sure you keep a note of all their names and who said what and when

Deckthewallswithpaintandplaydough · 23/09/2022 01:11

Well that’s good news! Poor little girly. Iv antibiotics are hard. Maybe get her a magazine? Or her favourite treat? You’re both being super brave and I hope she’s better soon!! Love you both, and hugs for dd (and you!) xx

Elpheba · 23/09/2022 07:14

Hope you got settled on a ward quickly and got some rest. Have been following your thread for ages and am so aghast at the lack of care and help you’ve been given. Really hope that what the doctor said yesterday gets followed through with and you get a date for asap.

isthismylifenow · 23/09/2022 07:53

Gosh OP, this is just unbelievable. I am so happy to hear she has finally been admitted now, at least you get to speak to the ENT.

She will feel a lot better sooner with the iv meds and the swelling will come down with the steroids.

Hope you managed to sleep just a little sleep too, paed wards are brutal I know.

Doingprettywellthanks · 23/09/2022 08:33

Sorry if kisses but do you have a Partner op? What’s their stance / involvement?

Doingprettywellthanks · 23/09/2022 08:34

Missed!

Soubriquet · 23/09/2022 08:36

I’m so glad she’s finally been admitted and receiving IV antibiotics. It’s needed 100%

Now let’s hope ENT help too

JudgeRindersMinder · 23/09/2022 08:55

This is the first I’ve seen your thread, so I’ve only read all your comments OP. What an absolute shitshow you and your poor dd have been and are still going through. I just hope that the tonsil removal is the answer and that it happens very very soon. So angry on your behalf that your dd has had to go through this

Natsku · 23/09/2022 08:59

So glad she's finally getting proper help, hope you get a date soon for the tonsillectomy.

ohnoohnoo · 23/09/2022 09:11

We've just seen the ENT consultant. He said we don't need to attend the appt next week and she is going to be put on the surgery list now. He said it's normally 6-8 week wait list but she will also be put on a cancellation list if anything comes up sooner

Hallelujah!!

Pity he can’t put her in today but still this is a massive step
