Teenage bank account farce

theskyispurple · 13/06/2022 20:50

Son has bank account with NatWest - teenage one called adapt. He has a debit card that he can use, has an online account and an app to manage it, i bank with the same bank and was his parent on the application.
He can't transfer money to me! How nuts is that! The account won't let him make payments via online banking. The bank says it's not
Possible with the teenage account...
Aibu? I just don't understand it....

dizzydizzydizzy · 13/06/2022 20:51

We've had same problem with Metro Bank. Perhaps if's some kind of security thing to
Stop people taking advantage of teens with lots of savings?

MolliciousIntent · 13/06/2022 20:52

Teenage or child accounts generally come with s whole bunch of limitations from a safeguarding perspective. How old is he?

greenacrylicpaint · 13/06/2022 20:53

is it an amount thing?
we have set dc account to tranfer 15€ max (cinema ticket value...) max possible is 50€.

theskyispurple · 13/06/2022 20:56

He's 14, and if he can be trusted with a debit card then surely he can transfer to his mums account!
You're right - I need to change banks. Hit me with suggestions

I had wondered that... I'll be more understanding if there's an obvious reason.

Nationwide was the best for my 2. They have online banking and cards and can transfer money to me easily. They had them as young teens and its stayed the same so no issues with being 18 either.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/06/2022 20:59

Dc2 is just 14 and can transfer money via their Lloyds banking app.

EskSmith · 13/06/2022 21:00

That sounds rubbish. My teens have nationwide accounts and have full online banking. They often transfer me money ( not as often as I transfer it to them though 🙄) as they like to shop with my Amazon prime.

A huge number of teens get tempted / tricked into being money mules and this will pretty much knock that on the head.

TheBolterdahling · 13/06/2022 21:00

Same with Barclays. We can do it if we go into the branch to set me up as a safe payee. Kids are 12 and 15. I didn’t even need to go into the branch to open the account - we did it on video call!

oznia · 13/06/2022 21:05

HSBC - teen has a "current" and a "saving" account with them. I do a standing order for pocket money to the current. She can manage both accounts via the app on her phone including online purchases and bank transfers.

Obviously no credit or overdraft facility.

It provides a good introduction to managing money.

😂😂 sounds about right for me too.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 13/06/2022 21:06

I opened a bank account for my DD age 12. Debit card, Internet banking etc. I wanted to encourage good savings habits so wanted a savings account to run alongside, so she could save a small bit of her pocket money. Could I do that? Nope. So she could use debit facilities but can't save. Madness.

RedSoloCup · 13/06/2022 21:07

My teenagers can't either (Barclays) we tried once when they wanted me to get them something online on my account

SummerSazz · 13/06/2022 21:07

Mine have Lloyds accounts with internet banking (ability to transfer) and Apple Pay. 13 and 15

BringOnSummerHolidays · 13/06/2022 21:09

I use Starling but it has a £2 admin fee a month. I can add and withdraw money at any time to my kids account. She has a debit card and app. I have looked at the bank I normally banked with and I wasn’t impressed with the teen account.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 13/06/2022 21:09

It’s annoying mine have adapt accounts 16 year can now do transfers but 14 year old can’t. Accidentally deposited a large sum into instead of his savings account and it was a massive ball ache and LONG phone call to get it transferred. Even the NatWest woman didn’t realise that you couldn’t do transfers on the app.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 13/06/2022 21:10

I mean Starling is organised so as a parent I have total control over her account. Including deposit and withdraw and blocking her card. I can see all her transactions too. She has her own app which only see her space.

lljkk · 13/06/2022 21:10

14yo DS bought a £300 VR-gadget with his debit card (Santander mini123 account) . I assume he can do bank transfers, too. He can't open a linked savings account with it, though, has to wait until he's 16 (stupid rule).

FawnFrenchieMum · 13/06/2022 21:11

My DS is with HSBC, he has full internet banking, debit card and savings account.
He can transfer money to me & others. He’s had this account since 11, before that it was linked to my internet banking.

Only annoying thing is his CTF is with them and it shows on his app. We were planning on telling him until he was old enough to have it.

couchparsnip · 13/06/2022 21:11

The Nationwide one is great. It's coming into its own now for DS as it has no foreign transaction fees and they can keep it until they are 25.

Floorandflooringme · 13/06/2022 22:29

Dc1 had a Santander account which was great for transferring money but couldn't have a chip and pin till aged 18 so opened a Halifax account at 16 in order to use chip and pin. Both banks have been good dc preferred Santander (except for lack of chip and pin) and now dc is 18 just uses Santander which was really easy to change to an adult current account.

4FoxxSake · 13/06/2022 22:47

Nationwide, has full internet banking and a debit card
