My 13yr old daughter is having an issue with sickness. It started at school before the Easter hols, on a Monday. I had to collect her as she had been sick. 2 weeks of Easter hols & she was fine. Then school rang cos she felt very sick a week later on a Monday . 2 weeks later she had to come home again because she was sick, on a Monday. Then it was half term, she was at her dad's & was sick on the Tuesday. I spoke to the gp after that, who said it sounded hormonal or/& anxiety. She suggested changes to diet & changes to how she takes her meds.

She went on the pill in Feb because of very heavy periods & pains.
Monday of last week she was sick 2x at school.

I took her to the nurse who examined her & found nothing amiss. She did ask for urine sample & bloods checked just to make sure.

Now it's Monday again, & I've had to collect her from school for being sick again.
She says it's like motion sickness as it's much worse when she has to move.

I know it sounds like a school anxiety problem being every Monday (apart from the Tues in the hols) but she says she's happy at school, & does appear to be.

If it was a side effect of the pill would it only happen on Mondays? GP did not suggest stopping it.

I'm wondering if she's now anxious about being sick in school on a Monday & that is making her sick. She really wanted to be there for this afternoons lesson though.

I will be seeing the gp again - when I can get an appointment.
But wondered if anyone has experienced similar?

Sleep pattern thing?

BatshitBanshee · 13/06/2022 13:35

Could she be rushing and taking the pill on an empty stomach or not had enough water? Estrogen can be very harsh on the stomach lining, making you sick and dizzy. It could be that's she's anxious about getting sick again in school and that's making her sick. Have you tried tracking her cycle with her? I find about 10 days or so before I'm due on I get very run down, queasy etc. It's likely though that it's harsh on the stomach.

I would take her off the pill personally. Unnecessary drug. You can manage painful periods with painkillers . Until you remove that, you can't disregard it. Obvious.

Nyfluff · 13/06/2022 13:39

I get sick during ovulation and with PMS, I was sick on different contraceptives too. Has she tried wearing seabands when it starts? Look into BPV too. The Mondays could just be a coincidence?

MolliciousIntent · 13/06/2022 13:40

My teacher friend just had one of his yr9 girls going through something similar. Took all involved a very long time to work out that she was pregnant.

Bancha · 13/06/2022 13:40

I started the pill when I was young and it made me very nauseous when I started a new pack each month. I can see why you’re not sure if it is related, but it definitely can cause sickness. I didn’t have the same problem when I was older, though.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/06/2022 13:41

Sounds like vertigo

RedTiledRoof · 13/06/2022 13:41

The pill used to make me throw up too. It was hormonal and felt very much like travel sickness. I switched from Microgynon to Cilest and it was much better.

Rainbeauxcat · 13/06/2022 13:42

My DD had this at the same age. She was referred to the hospital with possible abdominal migraine but they found nothing. Possibly related to food intolerances or allergies but nothing specific apart from nut and sesame allergy.

She is in her 20s now and seems to have outgrown it.

I assume in your DD’s case, inner ear infections etc have been ruled out?

Oh lord God, the Mumsnet GPs have arrived and blasted the pill as an unnecessary drug 🙄

Please disregard this unhelpful post OP, poster has no idea what they're talking about.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 13/06/2022 13:44

Has she done a pregnancy test? This would be my first thought.

I'm wondering if she's now anxious about being sick in school on a Monday & that is making her sick. She really wanted to be there for this afternoons lesson though.

Is there a specific lesson or subject she has on Monday mornings that she gets worried about?

I ask this question purely because when I was her age I had a lesson one morning a week (PE, in my case, but it could obviously be anything) that I used to get so anxious and worried about that I would get an upset stomach and/or feel faint sometimes. Once I'd got past it, it was fine.

I'm also wondering if - given that she said it was like motion sickness - the doctor has checked her ears? Sometimes ear infections or problems can cause horrible vertigo and nausea.

Also - is there anything she does a lot of that involves repeated movements or looking at something that's moving fast? Some people get a lasting effect from that which means they still feel like they're moving/what they're looking at is moving long, long after it actually stops. For example, if my partner goes on a boat, he still feels as if the floor is moving or thinks the carpet looks like it's undulating for a good 24 hours afterwards and he also gets that after playing certain types of computer game (he doesn't play games often at all, but he'll pass the time playing simple games on his iPad now and again). So I was wondering if there's anything your DD does on Sundays that might make her feel queasy on a Monday?!

Or is there a food or something that she eats at weekends?! Long shots, obviously.

TroysMammy · 13/06/2022 13:46

I used to feel sick on the pill, not all the time but when starting a new packet after the 7 day break. During the 7 day break I was extremely tired and was glad the beginning of the break was a Saturday so I used to sleep most weekends.

BlueSuffragette · 13/06/2022 13:47

With it always being on a Monday, ie first day back at school after the weekend, is she being bullied and using it as a way out of school?

10HailMarys · 13/06/2022 13:47

Painkillers don't make your periods less heavy, and most painkillers that work well enough to tackle really serious period pain would be far less appropriate for a 13-year-old than the Pill.

I went on the Pill as a young teenager because of heavy and painful periods and it changed my life so much for the better; I cannot begin to tell you how much healthier and happier I was and how much better I managed at school as a result.

TheCanyon · 13/06/2022 13:47

Did the nurse check her bp?

AaaarghSchool · 13/06/2022 13:48

Is she eating breakfast? If I skip a meal, I get dizzy and throw up. I know it's illogical and I've never understood why.

Has she had her eyes tested recently?
Inner ear infection?

Summer1912 · 13/06/2022 13:50

Similar situation the paed said anxiety and asd /dyspraxia investigations

And yes did happen on their holidays too.

Cheesewiz · 13/06/2022 13:51

Has she had covid recently? 3 or 4 weeks after I had covid I had horrible vertigo and sickness

Summer1912 · 13/06/2022 13:52

Yours could also be anaemic due to the previous heavy periods

BusterGonad · 13/06/2022 13:56

My first thought would be, what is going on at school that is making her sick/anxious etc. My second would be to stop the pill to see if the sickness stops.

You may manage this way, but many females have horrendous issues with period pain.

Wowsers, someone is actually living pre-1956. Astonishing.

Herejustforthisone · 13/06/2022 14:03

Also that poster obviously has never suffered with appallingly heavy, painful and unpredictable periods.
