My 13yr old daughter is having an issue with sickness. It started at school before the Easter hols, on a Monday. I had to collect her as she had been sick. 2 weeks of Easter hols & she was fine. Then school rang cos she felt very sick a week later on a Monday . 2 weeks later she had to come home again because she was sick, on a Monday. Then it was half term, she was at her dad's & was sick on the Tuesday. I spoke to the gp after that, who said it sounded hormonal or/& anxiety. She suggested changes to diet & changes to how she takes her meds.

She went on the pill in Feb because of very heavy periods & pains.
Monday of last week she was sick 2x at school.

I took her to the nurse who examined her & found nothing amiss. She did ask for urine sample & bloods checked just to make sure.

Now it's Monday again, & I've had to collect her from school for being sick again.
She says it's like motion sickness as it's much worse when she has to move.

I know it sounds like a school anxiety problem being every Monday (apart from the Tues in the hols) but she says she's happy at school, & does appear to be.

If it was a side effect of the pill would it only happen on Mondays? GP did not suggest stopping it.

I'm wondering if she's now anxious about being sick in school on a Monday & that is making her sick. She really wanted to be there for this afternoons lesson though.

I will be seeing the gp again - when I can get an appointment.
But wondered if anyone has experienced similar?

This is how both my and my daughter's Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) first presented, my daughter at age 13 and me at age 15. Mondays or days after bank holidays etc were always worse because of being on our feet more/travelling to school, after having more sedentary weekends. Just something else that might be worth considering

LucyLocketsBlackCat · 13/06/2022 15:34

I am an older person and suffered with dizziness and sickness for three years. Then I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2. Within a few months of taking the medication for that, the dizziness and sickness went away and never came back. Something to consider, maybe?

Gruffling · 13/06/2022 15:35

Undiagnosed head injury?

Also, regarding your comments about her not having friends in year 7 could she be autistic? Statistically, autistic people are more likely to have gastrointestinal issues.

mam0918 · 13/06/2022 15:46

is it nausia, lightheadedness, motion sickness?

if so it sounds like vertigo.

JuneJubilee · 13/06/2022 15:49

Poor kid. Just to add to your Google list BPPV nasty bastard thing. It came on suddenly and was awful. It didn't go for months. Sometimes the trigger was something quite random. (Walking up outside stairs & the sunlight 'flickering' between the railings' The wall paper at the dentists. So it could be something triggering her at school on a monday, different room, different activity... also just raising my arms would do it.

hope you get to the bottom of it quickly 🌸

Thegroaninggurner · 13/06/2022 16:03

There could be a few reasons the one that sticks out for me us it's only on. Monday she's sick, it could be a particular lesson? A particular child who's class she is in might be bullying her? Could be a teacher she doesn't get on with? If it was different days I would suggest a pregnancy test.

CuteNFluffy · 13/06/2022 16:03

Have her hearing/ears evaluated - could be a ENT issue.

Vertigo can also be an after effect of a virus - had this issue from 13 - 17ish luckily I never vomited because of it.

oneforsorrow1 · 13/06/2022 16:04

It might be the pill - when I was on it I had migraines every Thursday.

VioletLemon · 13/06/2022 16:06

Could she try a different type of pill?

XelaM · 13/06/2022 16:12

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 13/06/2022 13:44

Has she done a pregnancy test? This would be my first thought.

Not at 13(!) - it wouldn't be my first thought

WishICouldButIDontWantTo · 13/06/2022 16:18

@VioletLemon - I was thinking the same. There are different pills to try. I used to be on Microgynon, then I was on Marvelon, then Brevinor (think I was on Brevinor the longest). Can't remember why I changed though to be honest.

@XelaM - why not? Teen pregnancy does happen...maybe not a first thought, but would definitely be there as a possibility.

frydae · 13/06/2022 16:20

I don't think there was any suggestion it should be the first thought; but it's not unreasonable all the same. You are somewhat naive if you think it doesn't happen, for various reasons.

LemonSwan · 13/06/2022 16:20

I used to have morning sickness from the pill. It was worse if I woke up earlier than usual. Perhaps if she’s having a weekend lie in and then getting up early that it’s just pushing her over the edge 🤷‍♀️

It was first thing though - usually when teeth brushing. Not half way through a school day.

I would take her off the pill personally. Unnecessary drug. You can manage painful periods with painkillers . Until you remove that, you can't disregard it. Obvious.

If her periods are anything like mine were, then she will need more than a few painkillers. Mine were sheer hell.

12Thorns · 13/06/2022 16:22

Has anyone suggested vertigo?

DuckBilledPlattyJoobs · 13/06/2022 16:24

Vertigo?

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 13/06/2022 16:24

It does sound very much like a school anxiety thing. My, now 16 year old ds had this for years and also developed school refusal. He is much better now but used to get in such a state on a Monday and it was even worse on the Mondays after half term.
I got him some counselling and CBD oil which really helped and off course, now he is leaving school he is fine.
But if it does turn out to be the pill I’d recommend Tranexamic Acid, 14 year old dd has the same period issues as your dd. She didn’t want to go on the pill and I personally am glad, synthetic hormones are not great in a young, developing body. Our GP prescribed dd liquid TA as the pills are like torpedos! She takes it 3 x a day for the first 3 days.
I would also recommend this book, it’s very interesting, especially for young girls starting out with their cycle.

Migraine can also cause vertigo. I get vertigo and feel dizzy and sick with nausea but don’t get any other symptoms of migraine at the same time. It’s always when I’m tired or stressed. Get normal migraine as well.

12Thorns · 13/06/2022 16:25

Labyrinthitis can have same symptoms as vertigo, but it’s caused by an infection

scotscorner · 13/06/2022 16:27

Hi, probably exhaust the other avenues that people have suggested but - if the sickness doesn’t stop / gets worse, also consider pushing for an MRI in case it is neurological.

My teacher friend just had one of his yr9 girls going through something similar. Took all involved a very long time to work out that she was pregnant.

He discusses this with his friends? 🤐

OnlyHereForPete · 13/06/2022 16:34

I used to get abdominal migraines OP, sounds very much like that.

Benjispruce4 · 13/06/2022 16:39

Is there really nothing else for painful heavy periods? Wouldn’t want a 13 yr old child taking the pill. An you take her off for a few months and monitor?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 13/06/2022 16:41

2 of mine were the same, one I think was down to eating too much crap and late nights at his dad's at weekends

Not sure what caused it with the other dc but think it might have been anxiety. Both boys so not period or pill related
