To think Edward and Sophie Wessex should be the next King and Queen consort?

I think they’re lovely. So down to earth (for royals) and in touch with what the people of this country need. I read they went to a food bank to help out over lockdown.
Edward is a great representative for his mother and when I saw the interview he did which mentioned Harry and Meghan he was such a gentleman and said all the right things.

I think they’re so much more charismatic than Charles and Camilla (and younger too). Their children seem so polite and well - mannered. Well, the son we haven’t seen much of. But Lady Louise seems to have her head screwed on.

I know it’ll never happen, but I think it would be amazing if it did.

For your cringing viewing pleasure!

Ha ha, just speed watched through some of that to remind me of the horror. And Stuart Hall thrown in as well.

MiseryWIthAStent · 11/06/2022 21:45

Well, can I be next after them then please?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/06/2022 21:48

That would require a massacre on the scale of Game of Thrones.

However, what you might not remember is that Edward and Sophie were originally the holders of the 'pointless, spoiled, manipulative and moneygrabbing royals' title once it had been vacated by Edward VII and Wallis Simpson (with occasional dishonourable mentions for Prince and particularly Princess Michael of Kent) when they got together.

She became 'respectable' in the view of the press only when she nearly died due to a placental abruption in her first pregnancy. Before then, they were in the Press regularly with almost the same sort of stuff that is said about Meghan and Harry.

Yes an ideal pair - Sophie was filmed accepting bribes to introduce people to Royals. Edward, cushioned all his life and getting into Cambridge with ridiculously low grades, threw a tantrum on camera when the press did not praise his efforts for 'Its a Royal Knockout', then tried to film William at St Andrew's despite there being an embargo agreed! Talk about not living in the real world and no idea about getting and doing a real job on merit and not family connections.

Time to get rid of the royal lot once and forever.

Henerlo · 11/06/2022 21:52

Didn't he try to have a theatre as well? I seem to remember lots of "ooh yes he likes the theatre nudge nudge" comments in the press.

MMAMPWGHAP · 11/06/2022 22:01

If I volunteer at a Foodbank can I be Queen?

Topseyt123 · 11/06/2022 22:02

Well, it isn't how hereditary monarchy works. I think Charles and Camilla, then William and Kate will be fine.

I think Edward and Sophie have learned a lot, but back in the early days of their marriage they made their share of cock-ups. They seem more grounded now, but it was a harsh learning curve.

Sophie used to run her own PR firm and was lured by the gutter press into the fake sheikh disaster. The It's a Royal Knockout was Edward's idea, and was disastrous.

Edward had his own film production company for a while (Ardent) which never really amounted to much but was involved in controversy and family arguments, such as when his crew tried to follow William around at St. Andrew's University.

Costacoffeeplease · 11/06/2022 22:08

Younger is relevant as it means you wouldn’t necessarily be aware of stuff that happened in the 80s/90s

Yes - he worked for Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Really Useful Theatre Company for a while before setting up his own TV company, Ardent Productions.

I think they are just two more slime ball wastes of space.
but not as bad as Andrew of course.

BuanoKubiamVej · 11/06/2022 23:32

The fact that the next in line gets the throne is the whole point of hereditary monarchy. If Edward coukd get the job just for being more suitable then there's no reason to restrict it to that family at all. I object in principle to such an undemocratic system but at least the status of monarch is transferred without any rigmarole of campaigns and false promises.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/06/2022 00:05

If we are picking the next monarch, I'd vote for Martin Lewis.

We should come up with some sort of system where people who want to do it can put their name forward and everyone could say who they like best.

Why does being younger matter?

Anyway, it’s no wonder the rest of the world is confused when Brits come out with this “let’s have X next” stuff.

The point is simply that it is possible to be too young to remember all of their poor decisions and the shit that happened because of them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/06/2022 02:26

I think my mate Krissy should be Queen. She's not in line, isn't royal, she's a single mum of a child with disabilities. She's worth 200 of any of those arseholes.

You can't choose, that's the whole bloody point. Which is why I'd scrap this insanity. But you don't get a smorgasbord of betters and pick your favourite.

Whendidyoulastseeher · 12/06/2022 02:41

@Rosecloud I am not a royalist but my DS knows Louise through an extra curricular activity he does at his boarding school. She is a super girl by all accounts, they seem to have done a great job bringing up their children.

Rosecloud · 12/06/2022 21:14

@Whendidyoulastseeher I’ve heard similar accounts.
Sounds like they have.
