Hello, We are hopefully completing on a house tomorrow.

Increasingly im seeing examples of people giving people involved in their house sale some form of thank you gift

Is this the norm? Will our estate agent/ solicitor/ mortgage broker feel we are terribly ungrateful if we just pay them as normal?

No. Sending the lawyer a testimonial they can use in their appraisal or on their website would be well-received.

Kite22 · 10/06/2022 00:08

No.
Never heard of such a thing.
I mean, why would you ? Confused They are doing their job, and you are employing their services for no small amount of money.

HellonHeels · 10/06/2022 00:10

I gave my estate agents wine and chocolates. It was an emotionally-charged sale and they were kind and helpful and worked really hard to push the solicitors and buyers to get things done. They also dealt really well and kindly with my elderly downstairs neighbour who was really anxious about getting new neighbours.

Left a card and bottle of fizz for the buyers.

SD1978 · 10/06/2022 00:11

No. They got paid well for providing the service they were supposed to.

RightOnTheEdge · 10/06/2022 00:22

I have never bought or sold a house so I don't know if I would.
One of my relatives works for a conveyancing firm and she seems to get a lot of flowers and chocolates from her clients so I can't be too unusual a thing to do.

Like a PP said though, she doesn't own the firm she's just an employee so she doesn't get the thousands of pounds from the sales. The firm gets it. She works really hard and long hours.

Tallisimo · 10/06/2022 00:24

Nope. Never heard of this happening, ever.

Arnaquer · 10/06/2022 00:32

No way ! The amount of times I had to keep chasing both EA and solicitors for what I paid them, I should have had a gift.

Mayorquimby2 · 10/06/2022 00:38

Not a fucking chance

Mercurial123 · 10/06/2022 06:24

No and I've never known anyone send gifts.

balalake · 10/06/2022 07:30

Never heard of this before. Seems as if some here have had the good fortune to have a good estate agent.

applecartsonthehill · 10/06/2022 07:54

No, unless they did something out of the ordinary and above and beyond. Otherwise I'd have already paid quite a sum of money to them!

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/06/2022 07:55

No they are paid plenty of money to do their jobs.

They are not doing it as a favour

Aria2015 · 10/06/2022 08:00

Interesting thread. I haven't in the past, but I think I will maybe drop a bottle of wine and card for our estate agent. In this house sale, she's had to do a lot and has been super quick to respond to any queries etc... never though I'd say it, but if feel like she's earned her commission!

MinnieMountain · 10/06/2022 08:02

The best thing you can do for a conveyancer is leave good feedback.
I’m a rare solicitor working for a licensed conveyancers. Our property lawyers get rewards from the company if they get a certain amount of excellent feedback.

Wiseflower · 15/06/2022 15:37

If you had a good service from the Estate Agent then it is appropriate to send a Thank You card/chocs. It is up to you to do this and yes they get paid a commission but if the agent went beyond his duties to help you deal with problems (they don't have to) , then acknowledge your appreciation with a Thank you gift.
Obviously if they havent done a good job .. but that is not the discussion here because clearly, they did very well for you.

Lovemypeaceandquiet · 15/06/2022 15:40

Hell no, if anything they should be getting me something🙄

Wiseflower · 15/06/2022 15:42

.. to add.. you don't have to feel obliged to do anything, you will not look "ungrateful"... but courtesy for an excellent service over a period of time would justify a Thank you in some form...their website, card, gift...whatever is appropriate.
I received a very personal service from my estate agent, helpful and very supportive, guiding me throughout the sale.

However , the solicitor was slow and uncontactable a lot of the times.

LadyDanburysHat · 15/06/2022 15:42

I'm seeing this more and more with the estate agent we used, posting pictures of gifts they've received from clients. They really didn't do much work selling our house so I didn't. Our solicitor was okay but nothing great.

The only people who got a gift were the removal guys who got a bottle of whisky and a crate of beer. As they were the ones who really made life easier.

swedex · 15/06/2022 15:43

No because they were pretty useless!

SW1amp · 15/06/2022 15:44

Absolutely not

The estate agent we bought through gave us a bottle of gin, which probably says a lot about the amount of unnecessary stress they put into the process

AnyFucker · 15/06/2022 15:47

Of course not. I paid them a huge amount of money to do their job. Just like I do, and I don’t expect anything other than my salary/price quoted

Proudboomer · 15/06/2022 15:47

I did but only because they sent me flowers when my dad died during the house sale and spoke to the buyers to delay the surveyors until after the funeral.

Good grief, no. The big, fat fees for very little work are enough!
