To ask you how much you spend a week on shopping

I am trying to negotiate with a very tight DH that he needs to contribute more than he is doing to our household expenses. He says I could cut back on the household shop then I wouldn’t need him to.

Family : Him, me, 2 teenage girls, a dog and a cat.

what’s your average spend for your weekly shop, and which shop?

He has conveniently forgotten that there’s a cost of living crisis and my tolerance for this part of his nature is running out rapidly.

OP posts:

2 adults, 2 kids and a dog. Both kids have packed lunch for school.
Varies between £120-170 per week.

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 09/06/2022 22:32

OP I think most of us share your annoyance. May we ask what you are currently spending?

Kanta · 18/06/2022 14:31

Around £60 a week for two people. Using offers and discount codes wherever possible. Everything has become so expensive. We do mostly Aldi for fruit and veg. A lot of online shopping now. Tried Gopuff the latest. Sharing code for anyone who would like a discount.

I’m going to go on cooking strike. He loves my coming, but I can shop cheaper if I don’t buy ingredients for lovely meals. Easily fucking done. I’m happy to live on jacket potatoes. He has always been stingy and I HATE it. So tempted to cancel a few subscriptions that he likes too. That’ll save me some fucking money.

Oh FFS. Stingy but he still wants subscriptions. Tell him to do the food shopping this week. I imagine it will be a shock to his system when he finds out how much stuff actually costs.

We probably spend £200-£250 for 2 adults, 1 toddler and 2 ungrateful bastard cats. Cat food has gone up and litter has gone from £2 a bag to £5 a bag.

SatinHeart · 18/06/2022 14:45

About 140 a week - 2 adults, 2 young DC, 1 cat. Includes booze, most toiletries, cleaning stuff etc. Mostly asda, some Lidl. We cut out top up shops by doing 2 evenly sized shops per week instead of 1 big one, which means we don't get too low on fresh stuff. Looking for ways to get it down a bit though tbh.

Our budget is £50pw for two adults. 90% of time I'm under budget, but don't go over by more than £3pw if that happens. This includes a cheap bottle of wine (£4.50), sometimes two or a bottle of wine/lager. Also includes half our toiletries (other half I buy at work on offer and double staff discount). We have three main meals a day plus two snacks of biscuits/cake and fruit. I'm very careful though, we have mainly fruit that's on offer, keep a close eye on Tesco/Lidl prices and offers, and buy cheapest option from whichever. Salmon fillets reduced this week, so I've spent £10.06 on ten fillets which are in freezer. Diet is veggie/pescatarian as I don't like meat.

Cats have their own budget of £15pw, which is about right.

It varies between £130 - £200 a week, two of us and a dog.

ivykaty44 · 18/06/2022 15:20

hattie43 · 18/06/2022 16:08

OompaLoompaa · 18/06/2022 16:20

Family of 4 adults, £350 per week plus at least one takeaway or dinner out and a few lunches out per week.

RelativePitch · 18/06/2022 16:32

£200 pw, 2 adults, 2 hungry DSs, large dog and cat.

Svara · 18/06/2022 16:34

We are spending about £50 for an adult and a teen, cat food separately online. So I would expect £100 for your family minus pets.

Hoppinggreen · 18/06/2022 16:35

About £200, 2 adults, 1 teen boy who eats loads and one teen girl who eats little but expensively. Ddog is raw fed so that’s not included
We don’t get takeaways but go out roughly once a month to eat

Eatthecake80 · 18/06/2022 16:36
