To ask you how much you spend a week on shopping

Bunnyfuller · 09/06/2022 16:16

I am trying to negotiate with a very tight DH that he needs to contribute more than he is doing to our household expenses. He says I could cut back on the household shop then I wouldn’t need him to.

Family : Him, me, 2 teenage girls, a dog and a cat.

what’s your average spend for your weekly shop, and which shop?

He has conveniently forgotten that there’s a cost of living crisis and my tolerance for this part of his nature is running out rapidly.

Around £160. 2 adults 3 children.
not including cleaning, toiletries or alcohol

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 09/06/2022 17:00

Just me - usually around £25/£30 a week.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 09/06/2022 17:01

I shopped today and noticed (Tesco as close to work)

butter -£1.75
garlic purée - 90p
bread £1.20

vs last year

butter -£1.49
garluc purée -60p (like tomato paste)
bread £1

salary increase - nothing 😭

that’s just an example on every day things I use!

Topgub · 09/06/2022 17:01

If he thinks he can do it cheaper, make him.

You clearly need to adjust how you deal with your finances

Would I fuck put up with my oh telling me what to spend

BarbaraofSeville · 09/06/2022 17:02

Cancel all his subscriptions. You can't afford them if you need to reduce the food budget Wink

Then look at this thread for ideas about meals that you like, are easy to cook, and he'll find unappealing and make those your meal plan for the foreseeable.

OPI am sure he does love your coming btw !
He probably likes your cooking as well ! 😁

🤣🤣

DrAddisonForbesMontgomery · 09/06/2022 17:06

We are around £120 per week, family of 3.

TwoBlueFish · 09/06/2022 17:07

£120ish 4 adults (2x DS both late teens) and a cat.

TwoBlueFish · 09/06/2022 17:08

That’s Aldi mostly with a few bits from Tesco

anxiousmumagain · 09/06/2022 17:09

£130-150 a week for a family of 4 including 2 adults, 2 DC (one of whom is a toddler still in nappies), and 1 cat.

anxiousmumagain · 09/06/2022 17:09

That's a combination of Tesco, Aldi & B&M.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 09/06/2022 17:10

Sorry meant to say 2 adults,2 children at least £120 -£160 (pets too!)

JaneIsInsane · 09/06/2022 17:12

This is the problem when you don’t have joint finances. Prices fluctuate and no allowance is made. I couldn’t live with someone who was tight. We are a family of 5 including 2 teenagers and spend about £180. The teenagers eat like they’ve never been fed.

Girlintheframe · 09/06/2022 17:12

Roughly £150 per week, 3 adults, 2 cats.
Including 3 bottles wine per month, cat food and cleaning products.
This is me shopping around it best prices too!

AdmiralsPie · 09/06/2022 17:13

He needs to either believe you, or do the shopping and cooking for a month to help him understand. I'm quite a tight shopper and we've crept up to an average of £100ish now. Pets are done separately through zooplus.

If DC have packed lunches don't forget to factor that in. Our food shop got significantly more expensive when we switched from dinners to packed lunches for teens, but it's saved a lot overall.

Lolly1987 · 09/06/2022 17:15

About £150 on big food shop. 2 adults, 5 kids and we shop in Aldi or Lidl. I do sometimes need to do top up shops too.

FixTheBone · 09/06/2022 17:16

Around £300-400 per week. Morrisons.

3 Adults, 2 Teenagers, 4 Younger children, plus a niece and nephew who come before and after school and who seemingly don't get fed by their own parents.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 09/06/2022 17:17

Stingyness is the most unattractive feature so I'm not surprised you're at the end of your tether.

We spend around £200 per week thanks to price rises. That's 2 adults, 1 child, 2 cats and garden full of hedgehogs. We don't do any top up shops during the week, so that is the full amount.

Simonjt · 09/06/2022 17:21

Two adults, one 7 year old and a baby (so this includes formula), I haven’t included our pets. We average £50-70 a week. About another £10 per week for the animals.

PurBal · 09/06/2022 17:21

I’ve definitely noticed the prices going up. About £75 for 2 adults and a baby, no pets.

Bunnyfuller · 09/06/2022 17:21

Thanks all, just shown him a few posts, miserable twat he is.

😂😂😂😂😂 @flapjackfairy and @BarbaraofSeville

I saw my typo. No one will be sodding coming unless he coughs up some more!

I went to Aldi yesterday and did a weeks shop for myself and 3 DCs. Didn’t need to get nappies this week so that’s about 4 quid extra that I normally would spend.
But I got stuff for dinners for the week - I tend to buy meat that can be used for more than one meal, so got the biggest whole chicken I could get, which will do us for a roast one night and a pasta carbonara with the leftovers another night, a big pack of mince for a lasagne and a cottage pie - saves a fair bit making it stretch. I got stuff for kids’ lunchboxes and snacks, fresh fruit, I tend to buy frozen veg because it’s less waste and just easier come dinner time! I got toothpaste, some washing up liquid, bread, oat milk and cows milk, eggs and some biscuits.
I spent £47.

OceanbreezeSun · 09/06/2022 17:25

Between £80-£90, abit extra if getting toiletries/laundry stuff
(which all seems to run out at the same time!)

Big shop at Tescos, then a top up one mid week at Aldi for fruit/veg

2 adults, 1toddler dc. No pets.

We can’t afford to spend anymore tbh.

lostinwoods · 09/06/2022 17:33

2 adults - about 150/week. Dog's food comes to around 100/month (large breed)

FinallyFluid · 09/06/2022 17:34

I have no idea, not because we are minted but it varies from week to week, I have a horror of running out of things so tend to stockpile clubcard offers, but I can tell you one thing if DH commented he would be served his arse on a plate and told to sort it out.
