Regular poster but name-changed for obvious reasons.

I have been out of work for around 15 years. Firstly as a SAHM and then because of serious illness.

I have now been back looking for work for around 3 years, and tbh it is impossible.

I have a disability which rules me out of certain jobs such as supermarket or hospitality work or I would go and work there in a heartbeat.

And admin type roles are still the kinds of roles where we’re in an employer’s market, and I’m not even getting interviews.

I’ve had professionals look over my cv and applications, and they have all said there is no issue there so I can only assume that it’s because of the length of time I’ve been out of work compared to the fact that people who have been out of work for less time are far more common.

I am applying for entry level roles at this point, as I realise that my time out of the job market means that nobody will consider me for higher level roles such as I was doing before I left.

I have now resigned myself to the fact that I am just unemployable, but I am desperate to earn a living, and as degrading as it is I am seriously considering signing up to only fans?

I am nothing to look at, but I am told there’s a market for everything, so even though I’m definitely not model material, someone out there will likely pay, right?

Yes, I know it’s degrading, and I know that technically I shouldn’t want to do it and I don’t. But I literally don’t see any other choice at this point.

I work for a charity that has admin volunteers who work alongside the regular admin staff. Some are retired and wanting to contribute to the charity, others are doing it as work experience and there's a pretty good turn over as these move into jobs. Just make sure, if you go this route, that the volunteer experience demonstrates the skills you need to get work.

Swayingpalmtrees · 08/06/2022 09:39

I wouldn't, there is no way.
You could end up with stalkers and weirdos and a ton of problems you didn't anticipate. I also don't think you are likely to be very successful and you could put your energies into retraining in an industry that works around your health problems and a longer term solution.

allyjay · 08/06/2022 09:39

No I'd say don't do it. The average person makes hardly any money. It could affect your future chances of employment if you get recognised. It also opens you up to your content being stolen by unscrupulous punters and being put on online mainstream porn sites, potential doxxing, potential abuse from shitty punters, having to do more and more extreme acts to keep customers happy/interested. And lastly but by no means least could your self esteem deal with all this?

DuchessofAnkh22 · 08/06/2022 09:50

Just as a thought for you - I would say jobs are out there for the taking at the moment (the very reverse of an employers market)

What we get though for every job we post is FLOODS of CV's from the permanently unemployed as they have to show they are applying for jobs to continue to get jobseekers allowance. They don't actually want jobs, so we have a test people have to take, and it doesn't have a high pass mark, but we can see straight away if people are serious applicants or not.

You need to work out a way at the top/front of your CV of indicating you are not one of these.

Also check you are not missing these tests when you apply, many many companies do them to weed out people who aren't really interested in working and they go into peoples spam filters, and for us it's not worth chasing the non-respondents as there are so many of them but definitely people do miss out as they fail to check their spam. (we only find out as occasionally people phone and chase their applications, we say "oh you didn't do the test", they say "what test" etc...)

Amijustagrump · 08/06/2022 10:06

An old school friend does it and she makes a lot of money- she also works very hard and has a team of 4 people to "chat" to fans for her, she has a personal photograph and works with other creators to make her videos. It seems to do well you need to put in a lot of work!

thinsulation · 08/06/2022 10:07

If you think it's degrading then the simple answer is that you shouldn't sign up to OF. Previous posters have given good advice.

I'm an active OF creator (coming up to two years now), and it's more work than you imagine. You don't just snap a photo of your feet and get $$$. It's photography, decent lighting, editing, branding, promoting (so much promoting), figuring out social media, and then dealing with men.

letmeeatcrisps · 08/06/2022 10:21

Tbh there are a million apps you can use to completely change your face and body so you would be able to do it without actually outing yourself. I consider it all the time as a relatively attractive SAHM. Personally I don’t think I could hack talking to perverts all day long. My ex hubby was perving over Lottie moss’s OF (kates little sister) and I saw even she has to provide the service “rating dick pics”. I suppose it’s not her doing it, she probably has a team, but if even the girls who are rich and conventionally beautiful have to stoop to that, I’d say the average OF girl spends a lot of time talking gross stuff to w*nkers to keep them interested.
if that sounds like something you could do, crack on. Look into FaceApp etc to disguise / upgrade ur face. There are forums where girls share tips etc, reading those for a couple weeks really put me off as there are a lot of men who get off on scamming newbies and leaking their pics etc. They can also get refunds if they don’t like the content!! So money isn’t guaranteeed
i have long suspected that reality stars are used to market the platform - ie it’s cheaper to pay Kerry katona £500k to promote the site to her female followers than it is to spend 500k on a slick advertising campaign to reel in new talent. Just my opinion as someone who’s worked in marketing.

user124578 · 08/06/2022 10:54

This is quite simple. If you actually WANT to do onlyfans then go ahead.
But if you really don't and are just desperate for the money at this point then DO NOT DO IT. You'll regret it, end up posting more and more daring images that are on the internet forever.

Sounds like your self-esteem is quite low at the moment so referring to it as "degrading" tells me that signing up to it will only make you feel worse.

If you're willing to start at entry-level then just keep applying for roles. There are lots of entry level roles out there, even just data entry or scanning. Sign up with a local temp agency, that's always a great place to start. Or do some volunteer work to build up your confidence with people, and it means you'll have something recent to add to your CV too.

Good luck! I really hope you look back in 6 months time and see life in a whole new light.

madasawethen · 08/06/2022 10:54

What office skills do you have?
Do you know Word, Excel etc.?
Data entry, answering phones?

CaptSkippy · 08/06/2022 11:11

OP, you say you are currently applying for entry level jobs only. Have you applied for higher level jobs when you started you jobsearch or only entry level?

I can't recommend OF, if only because you can't earn a living that way. The top earners on Only Fans all became famous and successful through other platforms or were already celebrities. Everyone else can't even manage enough to pay rent on social housing. Furthermore, it's a dead-end job and to I mean to the side of 'dead'. Nearly everyone on OF has their pictures leaked and if you think your prospects are bleak now, you'll be dead in the water after that. Employers shouldn't hold it against you but stigma is part of the porn industry's sources of revenue.

Anyway, I am not sure your chances are that bad. Have a look at this guy: Andrew La Civita Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with him and I have never bought any of his products. I do, however, find a lot of his advice (he puts out a lot of free stuff on YouTube) very useful and I have never had a bad interview following his tips. I do struggle to get interviews, which is why I usually go via job agencies, but I haven't yet tried his advice on cover letters and resumes. I mean to do that next.

skybluee · 08/06/2022 12:49

I knew a friend who looked into myfreecams and there was loads of info online about people making amazing amounts of money, etc. It turned out that the average person on there didn't make anywhere near enough to live on.

Often in the newspaper articles they take the person's best ever day and multiply it out to say they earn x amount per month or year.

You are going to have to pretend you like it and deal with vile emails and contact from men enthusiastically when you actually think it's gross etc. That will be one of the more difficult aspects of the job.

However, I do understand why you're considering it.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/06/2022 12:57

Quite apart from anything else, it doesn't sound as if you will be in a position to make a livable income on Only Fans. It isn't an unskilled role.

Have you considered care work? It is still an area that it is relatively easy to find work in.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 08/06/2022 12:58

OP, you sound like you have lots to give an employer. You just haven't found the right job yet. You're not unemployable. I'd suggest you look on job boards specifically for people with disabilities. Evenbreak is a good place to start.

You can find them here: www.evenbreak.co.uk/en?gclid=CjwKCAjwkYGVBhArEiwA4sZLuPtGDxSbKNowUOAKPSXPIms6yIWOXHPQDm5BcJoL-NQJXZeKLPaYUxoCoxEQAvD_BwE

You are more than your feet!

Starrylight · 08/06/2022 12:59

You'll make next to nothing on Only Fans to be honest. I know a few of Dds friends do it (we're close), and these are girls gym fit, 22, and very pretty. Who can't make an income from it... If you're 'niche' such as very, very obese, or offering something 'non mainstream', or maybe have a twin? Then you'll not get far... I have a sellers profile on a 'site'.. Basically I swing, and I do on occasion flog off lingerie that's knackered. But I only do it as a bit of fun for my own amusement really. And there's women who basically send all day faffing around to earn less than you'd get working a supermarket till...

Suzi888 · 08/06/2022 13:05

I don’t think you’ll find it’s as lucrative as you think, agree with pp.
You think it’s degrading work, that’s not a great beginning. If I ever went into it I’d want to do it with my head held high and already anticipating I could be outed- just in case! It could seriously affect your mental health. Hope you find something soon.

Admin/customer service. Have good verbal and written communication skills.

I know word, excel etc and have a typing speed of approx 150 WPM.

Those are some good skills op, so no need to sell yourself short. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a need for you somewhere you'd be able to work with, particularly as there's a lot more flexibility with work from home right now.

Steps I'd do in your situation are:
Join a recruitment consultancy and use the free service to streamline your CV.

Look into big local employers especially universities and public funded institutions with a commitment to diversity.

Ask friends to keep you updated for any possibilities.

I know when you are looking it seems like nothing will happen but if you keep at it you'll get something.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 08/06/2022 13:33

The only reason I wouldn't is because, if length of time out of the job market is an issue for you, being on OnlyFans and therefore maybe dialling down your job search will only worsen your situation.
I would try to find work - any work - first.

Gnomechange · 08/06/2022 14:29

An apprenticeship might be a good way to get back into work. It probably is the gap in your CV that is putting employers off.

www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk/apprenticeshipsearch

An apprenticeship will offer you training etc (fairly poor money though).

There are several organisations that work with organisations to provide paid internships for disabled people. Not sure where you are based but this one is in Scotland.

inclusionscotland.org/employers-employ-a-disabled-person-internships/wecanwork-internships

good luck!

Fuzzyhippo · 08/06/2022 15:48

I'm considering the same but at 24 and 150 pounds at 5'10 I'm not as skinny as I used to be so not sure anyone would subscribe Grin Did consider a stripping role but my mum said I was too old and fat..

madasawethen · 08/06/2022 18:01

You've got some great skills! Let's see what can be leveraged.

What higher level jobs did you have before and what job titles have you been applying to?

What do you like doing and what are you good at?

Are you getting any responses to your resume?

In my previous job I worked as a Finance manager in the public sector. I worked my way up from finance admin though and now most companies are looking for a finance qualification which I don’t have.

Previous to that I worked as a secretary for a financial services company, and as a customer adviser for an insurance company.

I’ve been applying for admin roles in the civil service, in fact one I applied for a few weeks ago which I didn’t get an interview for has today been re-advertised.

I’ve applied for call centre jobs at direct line and MonzO and nationwide.

Various other admin jobs in the private sector.

people who have seen my cv have said that it looks fine but because I don’t have any recent experience no company is going to want to touch me.
