What is this pain in my heel??

Springandsummerarecoming · 07/06/2022 07:12

For a few days now I’ve had pain in the heel of my foot. It’s at its worst when I get up in the morning and then is bad when I’ve been sitting and get up again. I can’t tell if it’s muscular or not. I’m hobbling like I’m 90. After work I think I’m going to apply heat and see if it relaxes the muscles and of that helps. Any other tips?

Sounds like plantar fascitis

There's loads of things that can help. Massaging it with a tennis ball or frozen water bottle. Arch support insoles. Anti-inflammatory gel massaged in (I use £1 ibuprofen gel from Poundland).

Volterra · 07/06/2022 07:15

Possibly Plantar fascitis. Be careful what footwear you use and there are stretches if you Google. My sympathies, very painful.

I'd say it's plantar fasciitis. There are lots of tips to help manage it on google. I've had it recently, but it has got better (google made me fear it was lifelong). I've narrowed the cause down to spending a long time in a particular pair of boots.

Typical plantar facilis symptoms - I've been there so you have my sympathies!

The biggest thing which made mine leave was to ensure supportive footwear and, believe it or not, walking a lot. I got some decent, walking shoes as you need the supportive soles (you can also get insoles online which make a huge difference) and keep myself active. Seems counter-intuitive but really helps.

It probably feels like it'll never go, but it does eventually! Hope you feel better soon as it is a really 'special' kind of pain Flowers

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/06/2022 07:25

Never go barefeet, wear supportive shoes all the time, I have Birkenstocks for slippers.

LakieLady · 07/06/2022 07:48

Yep, PF, aka "policeman's heel".

Bloody painful, I had it for years and can't now remember what made it clear up in the end. Gel inserts in my shoes helped.

piratehooker · 07/06/2022 08:16

I feel for you, I've developed this recently too. Because of my job, my first thought was that I am resting in bed with post-Covid fatigue so much that I must have pressure ulcers on both heels, no question, almost annoyed when I couldn't find any evidence of it. Then realised I sleep on my side, no pressure through my heels at all! Can only assume it's PF. As people above have mentioned, I have found it worse when I walk barefoot - I hate shoes. But reluctantly have found wearing something supportive and walking a bit more often is helping.

Thanks to a PP for the advice re: ibuprofen gel as well, I will hijack that suggestion and try it myself.

I massage the entire sole of my foot, as the plantar fascia that is causing the problem covers the entire sole, so I'm told.

I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but that, as well as insoles and temporarily reducing my activity, got rid of my last bout of pf in two weeks - but because I had it before and I recognised what it was, I acted straight away.

MatildaTheCat · 07/06/2022 09:10

It’s agony. Mine only really improved when I wore the orthotic inserts all the time. They take some getting used to but we’ll worth it. Unfortunately it wasn’t quick.

if you catch it early you may be lucky. All of the above too.

NippyWoowoo · 07/06/2022 09:12

I bought a foot roller and all the right footwear etc but what really REALLY made a difference was a foot massage I booked in a Thai salon, I asked the woman to focus only on that foot and explained the pain I had.

Best half hour of my life, she used an acupuncture stick. It was really sore after but omg the different it made after a couple of days!

I now only have slight pain that goes away once I've walked around a bit, I reckon another trip would sort it out for good but haven't gotten round to it yet.

SlatsandFlaps · 07/06/2022 09:13

I'm in a wheelchair due to Plantar Fasciitis despite having MS which in itself, does not require a wheelchair! I highly recommend Skechers Go Walk 5 - must be the Go Walk 5, no other type is as good in my personal opinion.

Possiblynotever · 07/06/2022 09:27

Had it! Funnily enough wearing high platforms helped a lot ( and I do not normally wear high heels).
No ballerinas, no barefoot, no no no All Stars!

romany4 · 07/06/2022 10:06

Sounds like plantar fascitis to me.

It's bloody painful

Stillfunny · 07/06/2022 10:09

I had it in both heels. Probably caused by weight gain as well. The only thing that worked for me was acupuncture by my podiatrist. Quite painful getting needles stuck in my foot , but instant results.

mrsister · 07/06/2022 10:10

Lots of good advice in here.

I’ve had bouts of PF and have learnt to keep it at bay by investing in good trainers/boots for walking, stretches, massage etc. YouTube for stretching videos.

Herecomestreble1 · 07/06/2022 10:12

A friend of mine recently had this and turns out it was gout!

toogoodforthisworld · 07/06/2022 10:16

Try metabolic stretching - I bought an online course to learn to do the splits and it's fabulous xx

KarmaComma · 07/06/2022 10:30

Definitely a sounds like PF - the fact it's in the heel, that it's worse in morning or after sitting. But don't discount calf issues. They can present exactly the same way.

beachcitygirl · 07/06/2022 10:36

My sister had it years ago & was told to stop wearing flat shoes and heels and wear the type of heel the Queen wears. She bought a few of these types from M&S
And it died down relatively quickly.

I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/wide-fit-block-heel-square-toe-shoes/p/clp60532525?intid=mobileappppdpshare

LadyPoison · 07/06/2022 10:52

I've developed this recently so you have my sympathy. I've been seeing a podiatrist who diagnosed PF and fitted me with insoles and that helped a huge amount. She's also given me stretches to do which also help.

I've now bought some shoes with built in arch support as well which I'm finding comfy and there are some reasonably OK styles out there which was a pleasant surprise.

Spidey66 · 07/06/2022 11:05

Definitely classic planter fasciitis. What helped for me was arch supports from the footcare counter in Boots/pharmacy. They're a bit expensive about £20 a pair but are well worth it. They take a while to get used to but once you are they're comfortable.

bloodyunicorns · 07/06/2022 12:41

Yes, plantar fasciitis. My sports therapist recommended rolling a golf ball under your heel regularly to stretch the muscles, or a small bottle of frozen water.

A sports massage will help to loosen any tight muscles too. Arch-supporting footwear is the best thing though. I have new Skechers arch-supporting flip flops, which are wonderful.

Also lose weight, if you're overweight. Good luck.

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 07/06/2022 12:58

Agreed PF. I’ve suffered for over 10 years but then over the pandemic period I started to take a regular regime of multivitamin, probiotic, vit D3 and magnesium. I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve had an issue with my heels in the past 2-3 years and I’m convinced it’s the D3. Must take it with the magnesium as the magnesium helps the D3 to work and be much more effective. I forgot to take my vitamins for a few days last week due to being ill and the heel pain started again. Back to normal now.
