To think you should sit at an appropriately sized table

AIBU to think that if you're a group of 2 you should sit at a table for 2 and leave the tables for 4 for larger groups?

We're at a cafe and 3 adults plus 2 kids crammed on to a table for 2 whilst there's a couple of guys taking up a table for 4. I wouldn't say anything to then obviously but it's a bit annoying. To answer the obvious questions: no, the table for 2 would not have been occupied when they got here, it only just opened and the seats were still on the table when we arrived. Also the seats are not better for the table of 4. The only advantage is more table space.

I don't think you understood what I was saying @DameHelena. Were they about to take the only four-seater table in the entire cafe?

I was addressing your point that they were two people taking a 4 table, not how many 4 tables there were.

That wasn't my point.

Last time I went in a cafe, I asked for a table for one and was seated at a table for four. I was there for lunch, so they were possibly stopping a larger party from eating there, and so making more money. But it was their choice, and there weren't any smaller tables free at that point. I would normally aim for a smaller table, but it can depend on what's available.

I have been in a busy cafe and ended up sharing a larger table with other people who were strangers. It was fine then, but probably wouldn't always be, would depewho the others see.

On a train - if you want to sit together, you need to book. Otherwise you don't have a right to sit together. IME, people often will move if it's a family with small children, but it depends how busy the train is. On very busy trains, and can be too difficult to move round. Unless it's a short journey, I'd be unwilling to give up my seat for a couple or group, unless one was clearly in physical need.
