To think Elton John performing Candle in the Wind was a bit wierd??

I just thought it was an odd choice given that he performed that song at Diana's funeral? Must bring back unhappy memories for the royals surely?

He has never performed that song again publicly and he never will x

Thank god for small mercies.

Ah okay sorry everyone I saw a clip and thought it was candle in the wind!! I'll get my coat...

Took the time to create a post to complain about a programme that you didn't watch and were wrong about anyway! These are the type of people who email ofcom about things they never watched days after it was broadcast.

SlatsandFlaps · 05/06/2022 12:44

Cancel the cheque!!!!!

PuppyMonkey · 05/06/2022 12:44

The threads on last night’s jubilee show are very entertaining. Grin

Highlyquestionablehoumous · 05/06/2022 12:45

When he started the first few notes I did think it was Candle in the Wind and was like WTF?!

Forinara · 05/06/2022 12:47

The opening notes/tone were purposefully matched to Candle to create a fleeting similarity (possibly, as a gentle ode to Diana). I believe he did this intentionally as he is enough of a genius to pull it off with grace (unlike most of the others on the stage last night). However, it then rapidly/obviously shifted to the known arrangement of the song on the setlist.
There was a strong sense that Diana should have been there making her first large platform stage debut as the queen-in-waiting rather than Tom Parker Bowles' mischievous mum.

Forinara · 05/06/2022 12:50

Harry was never going to attend a concert in which she was sneakily being debut anted as the succeeding queen.

lap90 · 05/06/2022 12:52

Wishful thinking.

jubileetrain · 05/06/2022 13:04

He never changed anything at the beginning of the song

countrylifer · 05/06/2022 12:15

It would be weird if he had, but he actually did Your Song!

I just love this response 😆

Simonjt · 05/06/2022 13:11

OP specsavers do reasonably priced hearing tests 😁

FluffMagnet · 05/06/2022 13:13

If it makes you feel any better, I said exactly the same to DH last night when it started up!

Berlinlover · 05/06/2022 13:16

Why create a post about something you didn’t watch?

Smartsub · 05/06/2022 13:20

I didn't see the concern, I saw your thread title and thought, surely not...

PAFMO · 05/06/2022 13:21

KyaClark · 05/06/2022 12:16

Well, this is embarrassing

The opening notes of Your Song have always been vaguely reminiscent of the opening of CITW.

ApathyMartha · 05/06/2022 13:23

Wasn’t it Will and Kates first dance to Your Dong (I meant Your Song but have decided to leave it - caught the D instead of the S 🤭)

TarpaulinEyes · 05/06/2022 13:49

All together now 'It's a little bit funny'..........

bloodyunicorns · 05/06/2022 14:05

Dh and I thought the same! The opening bars are very similar...

RhiWrites · 05/06/2022 14:10

Should have done ‘I’m still standing’.

'Oh, I'll just remind you of your Dead Mum by playing the opening chords to the completely different song that I'm playing'

Your Song is in E flat major, Candle in the Wind is in E Major.

Admittedly, a lot of people can't easily distinguish between semitones without a reference, but really?

balalake · 05/06/2022 16:02

As it was recorded, there was no chance of it being anything other than respectful, and given the number of people who like atonal bad karaoke, no wonder some people cannot distinguish between E flat major and E major.

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 05/06/2022 16:05

Thank god for all PPs, I seriously thought I'd completely blocked out part of the concert.

RuthNotTheBiblicalOne · 05/06/2022 16:07

Ah come on, who hasn't made a tit out of themselves on MN? Rite of passage, innit?
