Crabs and nips

I know, clickbait-ish but not really!

I was at a Jubilee parade today with a male friend (who thinks he is king of witticisms). There was a crab mascot in the parade. Anyway, at the end, when everyone was dispersing, we bumped into the crab mascot being lead along by a lady. I doubt the person in the costume could have seen out and had been guided through the whole parade. My friend shouted to crab and guide, 'bit nippy today' and started to laugh. Guide looked horrified, I stepped back and said 'WTF?'. Friend was confused and said 'you know, crab, nippy?'.

He's 54 and I had to explain why you don't shout a comment like that at a woman and had to explain. I think he understood because he didn't speak to me again, sulked then went home.

Was IBU to call him out or was I being precious? The guide was a similar age to us.

Oh dear God. You are actually ridiculous

This

Basilbrushgotfat · 05/06/2022 07:04

I can't think of any other reason to find it offensive lol

It's not offensive, so no reason to find it offensive.

The OP is wrong, it's simple.

WonderingWanda · 05/06/2022 07:30

If he has shouted it at a woman wearing a tight top with very visible nipples that would have been inappropriate in the co text of the crab costume then no it was not. Bit of an overreaction as far as I can see. The word nippy on it's own has nothing to do with nipples and doesn't offend me because I am a woman.

MistyRuins · 05/06/2022 08:00

I think the crass bit comes in because cold (nippy) weather can make nipples more noticeable

That's not where the phrase originates though. Op is making connections that don't exist.

Exactly this. Completely ridiculous op.

I'm down two for two so far on MN this morning, the threads I'm opening are so confusing. I don't understand how you knew he was talking to her or that he was referring to her own body.

EarringsandLipstick · 05/06/2022 08:14

@OldTinHat

I really hope you are going to apologise to your friend.

You are acting like this was humorous. It wasn't. He made a bit of a pun, it was fine, you mortified him. Don't act like it's all fine.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/06/2022 08:23

Oh dear me...no, no man can say nippy, nips, nipples, nipply or any such variation to any woman, ever!

PP totally misses the point...😆

So, if not that, what did you tell him off for? I don't think anyone has got your point.

I think he understood because he didn't speak to me again, sulked then went home.

That's not sulking, it's an emotionally intelligent response to a difficult situation. When someone is being needlessly aggressive and you don't want a row the smart option is to just not engage.

But it really seems that is the point you're trying to make here to be honest.

He said something completely in context to someone dressed as a crab. He wasn't commenting on her nipples! So for you to be "horrified" and have to explain to him he shouldn't have made that comment...how else is that supposed to be taken.

SecondBestBed · 05/06/2022 08:44

This is completely bizarre. I have no idea what you’re talking about and I’m the same age as you. I had to read the thread to even get an idea of what you would mean. Nippy means chilly weather. Nothing else. He was making a pun.

I was so taken aback! But no, I didn't make a scene. I just said WTF at the same time guide lady looked horrified/shocked/perturbed (use the word of your choice, you weren't there so fill in the gap that fits your imagination of the scenario best!).

They scuttled past (oh dear, now I'm the one with the puns), and I said to him that you can't shout that at women and then I saw he got it and then he was embarrassed. With me. Not in front of anyone else! Just us.

So it's me BU then. Thanks for telling me. I've just been sick of being shouted at with similar comments and about 'smuggling peanuts' ffs. I'm 50 and have always worn a bra but 40yrs of this kind of thing raises my hackles.

If they did look shocked and horrified, which I doubt, then it was at you shouting “what the fuck” for no good reason. You have behaved quite badly towards your friend and owe him an apology.

I really didn’t understand what you were getting at when I first read your post. But with the help of other posters, I gather it is some bizarre connection you have made between the words “nipple” and “nip” or “nippy”. They are not the same things and no connection. One is a body part the other is a small pinch or reference to the weather.

RusholmeRuffian · 05/06/2022 10:52

I think you should apologise to your friend for being utterly ridiculous

theufointhe · 05/06/2022 11:03

What’s a crab got to do with the queen? I feel like I’m missing some obvious connection

Floydthebarber · 05/06/2022 11:04

I imagine they looked at him as it was probably the 50th time they had heard that line shouted towards them! A crab on a cool June day is going to get a lot of 'but nippy?' comments.

LifeInsideMyhead · 05/06/2022 11:08

Have you apologised?

LoveLarry · 05/06/2022 11:14

pumpkinpie01 · 04/06/2022 22:29

The woman was horrified - really ?!

I bet she was

Then everyone clapped at the OP

Grin
GentlemanJay · 05/06/2022 11:17

Jesus. I bet you are a laugh to be around at parties.

OldTinHat · 04/06/2022 22:27

BTW I do love all of your crabby replies!!! They've made me laugh!

That's the irony. He made a crabby replies but that one you didn't understand.

druto · 05/06/2022 11:20

Er....could you explain why you shouldn't say that to a woman?

particularly one with a giant crab?

MissMaple82 · 05/06/2022 11:30

You sound very boring!
