Crabs and nips

I know, clickbait-ish but not really!

I was at a Jubilee parade today with a male friend (who thinks he is king of witticisms). There was a crab mascot in the parade. Anyway, at the end, when everyone was dispersing, we bumped into the crab mascot being lead along by a lady. I doubt the person in the costume could have seen out and had been guided through the whole parade. My friend shouted to crab and guide, 'bit nippy today' and started to laugh. Guide looked horrified, I stepped back and said 'WTF?'. Friend was confused and said 'you know, crab, nippy?'.

He's 54 and I had to explain why you don't shout a comment like that at a woman and had to explain. I think he understood because he didn't speak to me again, sulked then went home.

Was IBU to call him out or was I being precious? The guide was a similar age to us.

Are you saying men shouldn't say the word nippy in front of a women, lest it be misconstrued that he is talking about her nipples?

Very very very ridiculous.

OldTinHat · 04/06/2022 22:27

BTW I do love all of your crabby replies!!! They've made me laugh!

Ridiculous. He made a crab pun. That is all.

pumpkinpie01 · 04/06/2022 22:29

The woman was horrified - really ?!

SofiaSoFar · 04/06/2022 22:29

YABU to use "call him out" when you're not a teenage girl.

OldTinHat · 04/06/2022 22:30

Oh dear me...no, no man can say nippy, nips, nipples, nipply or any such variation to any woman, ever!

PP totally misses the point...😆🤣🤣

Seems like someone had a bit of a sense of humour failure!!

OldTinHat · 04/06/2022 22:32

I do love AIBU!

You lot are just the best!

It never even occurred to me that your friend was referring to anything other than the crab, and what crab claws do.

It was indeed nippy today. It's June and currently 9 degrees outside.

Goodbyecustardtart · 04/06/2022 22:38

Good grief! Over 60 years I’ve been missing out on all those opportunities to take offence or ‘be horrified’ every time someone said it was ‘a bit nippy’ or they were ‘just nipping out’ ! Who knew?? Thank you OP for enlightening me.

Basilbrushgotfat · 04/06/2022 22:42

Lol I had to read your post twice to realise what might be wrong with what he said

HarrietSchulenberg · 04/06/2022 22:42

WTF are you on about? Your friend made a perfectly standard, almost hackneyed, joke about crabs nipping and you've skewed it into something about nipples? You must be literally the only person in the universe who could have managed that and I'll eat my own eyeballs if the person guiding the crab costume was actually offended.
You're the one who's bloody weird here.

probably just a bit cheesed off at walking round in a crab costume all day.🦀

ThinWomansBrain · 04/06/2022 22:51

sorry, not keeping up with the pun quota
probably just a bit crabby at walking round in costume all day.🦀

DiscoYear2000 · 04/06/2022 23:01

Have you been on the jubilee juice, OP? 😃

To repair a bicycle wheel you might need to buy spoke nipples and a nipple driver. Should you insist on being served by a man? And obviously women will have to leave the room in car maintenance classes for the lesson on bearing lubrication when the instructor shows how to locate the grease nipples.

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 05/06/2022 00:10

😂 i love this thread. 🦀

SmartCarDriver · 05/06/2022 05:32

Are you sure the guide looked horrified and didn't just give you a sideways glance?

Dunnoburt · 05/06/2022 05:49

Yabu, it's the sort of thing I would say too!....

TibetanTerrah · 05/06/2022 05:54

OP, do you have particularly spectacular nipples that men often comment on and so his comment triggered you? Confused

HmmmHashtag · 05/06/2022 06:19

You are being very ridiculous. The term Nippy refers to biting cold, a nip in the air, has been recorded as being used since 1898, with nip being used since 1540.

Also, puppies nip, and cars can be nippy.

In that case, so have I.

If this isn't about you being offended by a man using the word nippy to a woman, what is it about?

He was making a weather/crab pun. Nothing to do with nipples.

I think the crass bit comes in because cold (nippy) weather can make nipples more noticeable.

That's a stretch too far!

Basilbrushgotfat · 05/06/2022 07:04

I can't think of any other reason to find it offensive lol
