What a faffadoodledo. Over two hours it says. More like over two DAYS! Please share the recipes you wish you'd never started, just to make me feel less of an idiot for embarking on this kitchen odyssey.

@Stroopwaffels I was kind of being light hearted, and poking fun at my own stupidity for embarking on the recipe in the first place. Obviously I should have made that plainer

Hopeful16 · 04/06/2022 12:00

@intwrferingma did you finish it?

intwrferingma · 04/06/2022 12:02

@Hopeful16 I have to assemble it. The jelly has set (hurrah!) and I'll try and make it presentable later. If I remember to I'll take a picture. It's bound to be more 'rustic' than the original!

Mine!

OMG @Hopeful16 !!! That is AWESOME! The bar is high!

I think it's the shards that make it!

Oh and arammetti biscuits from the shop.

I'm now calling them this forever 😍

chunkymandarincoulis · 04/06/2022 12:10

Oh my days. What a faff.

I like the tip right at the end saying that to save time you could buy all the ingredients instead of making them from scratch.😂

starlingdarling · 04/06/2022 12:13

I don't quite know how to serve it without getting odd amounts of the different components and ending up with a messy soup on the plate.

User487216 · 04/06/2022 12:17

I bet there is an empty space in the shops where lemon Swiss rolls and amaretti biscuits were

@Hopeful16 trifle looks delicious

BigWoollyJumpers · 04/06/2022 12:17

I just posted on another thread, but I made it all from prebought ingredients and it was really nice! The only bit I made was the mandarine coulis. It didn't take long at all. Waitrose Lemon Swiss roll, lemon jelly, ready made custard, bought Amaretti, cream. Job done.

BigWoollyJumpers · 04/06/2022 12:18

If I make it again, I may add a splash of Amaretti alcohol, even better.

2bazookas · 04/06/2022 12:20

Trifle from scratch is REALLY easy to make. Family birthday favourite here.

In that recipe I'd skip the triangles on top.

ivykaty44 · 04/06/2022 12:20

you can make or buy any of the ingredients, no need to be a martyr

just make what you like baking etc and buy the rest, buy all of it, it really doesn't matter if its all ready made and you assemble it in the glass jars

RiverSkater · 04/06/2022 12:23

@KateMcCallister which Jamie recipe is that? I do like his food. Italian Hunters chicken is delicious.

My partner always says this about Jamie recipes. Some can be done in the time but only when you've been making it for years and know it off by heart.

Iwillgotothegym · 04/06/2022 12:25

ive been in one of the threads about cooking from scratch with many people saying how much better and cheaper home made tastes than shop bought cake. It’s a shame this is a recipe that even the confident bakers here are saying they would do quite a lot of shop bought including an actual cake

Also from that thread I presume more expensive than starting with flour, butter and sugar for something designed for at least sometimes large batch for a street party.

KateMcCallister · 04/06/2022 12:26

@Antarcticant

When it won, didn't the creator say that the idea was you could choose how much to do from scratch - and buy all the things pre-made if you liked?

This makes so much more sense 😂

I make "meals" from scratch every day. I like cooking. Never buy ready made. However, for puddings and cakes, I don't enjoy making them, quite honestly it's not my thing, I can't be arsed, and it was a once a year kind of thing.

chunkymandarincoulis · 04/06/2022 12:29

Not sure about the jewelled chocolate bark. DH doesn't much like surprise lumps in his food. Apparently it was a childhood experience with tutti frutti ice cream that set that off.

dodobookends · 04/06/2022 12:32

You know they gave us an extra day's bank holiday?

Now we know why. It was so we would have enough time to make that ruddy trifle.

KateMcCallister · 04/06/2022 12:34

@RiverSkater I've found it on a website but the original is in the book

www.recipecommunity.com.au/main-dishes-meat-recipes/jamie-oliver-chicken-skewers-amazing-satay-sauce-fiery-noodle-salad/mimxz9zu-acf38-470625-cfcd2-ykx2ydmk

Sorry for the long link, I'm on the app. It's really delicious but quite fiddly! And that's only part of the meal 😂

There are some of his that I can make in very quick time but yes, when you know it by heart and have tweaked the order to suit you better.

motherofawhirlwind · 04/06/2022 12:36

A friend made the trifle totally from scratch for a party on Thursday and it was amazing, but she said it took 2.5 days!

Fizbosshoes · 04/06/2022 12:38

@MrsToothyBitch
I look at what you have to do and up to a point it will be so far so normal. Then the next step will involve infusing x weird ingredient that needs 3 things done to it first or leaving y marinating in the fridge for a crazy long amount of time (and room

Yes, My pet hate is seeing a reasonable length list of ingredients (say 8 things) and I think that looks manageable, BUT one of the things is, for example " 2 tbsp of curry paste - see page 11" Turn to page 11 and there's another "recipe" for curry paste with 20 ingredients before you can even start the original recipe.
Not just Tom Kerridge though, other chefs have tricked me like this as well, just in case it feels like we're singling him out😂

Topseyt123 · 04/06/2022 12:44

I just wouldn't even start that.

MrsRinaDecker · 04/06/2022 12:45

She was on the one show on Thursday, and they gave lots of tips of pre-made stuff you could sub in. The clip is probably still on iplayer.
