Not a royalist or anything like that but I’m feeling quite emotional watching it! Once in a lifetime thing for most of us I’m sure

With all the awful things going on in the world at the moment this is a welcome distraction, I’m finding it fascinating to watch tbh!

It's the nickname for the Irish Guards and used proudly.

Narcissus, your comment is ignorant in the extreme. Every one of the armed service personnel on the parade ground will be a highly trained member of the forces. They're not just wheeled out every time there's a bit of a tune required.

Yes, that's the problem...

Narcissas...

I’ve seen at least 2 other jubilees. So not once ina. Life time.

It's the first platinum jubilee for royalty. No one has reigned that long.

Oblomov22 · 02/06/2022 14:07

Saw the crowds in the tv. Amazing.

😮 I'm Irish and have it recorded (cos I do love the pageantry and fly past) but who said that and in what context? 🤯

It's simply the proud nickname of the Irish Guards and is very well known.

From RTÉ to go with my earlier source:

"Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations began in Britain with strains of 'Spancil Hill' as the Irish Guards known as 'The Micks' have been given the task of Trooping the Colour."

Jennifer, the regiment historically was recruited from Irishmen - it was set up to honour the Irish soldiers who served in the Boer War. It's not 'others' using the term, but the regiment themselves.

The cringe factor is too deep with me to want to watch it. It seems that we are a deeply immature country to be still holding this sort of ancient, antiquated pageantry, based on military splendour - men on horses who would be as useful as a marshmallow in, say, Ukraine - for someone whose main claim to honour is Not Having Put A Food Wrong. (Except she has, quite a few times.)

And the flyover is an expensive, polluting tradition that I hope Charles will abandon.

Actually you're the cringe factor someone who doesn't understand that these 'men on horse back' are serving members of the Armed Forces and would actually be a lot of use in any war!

She came about just before 1 (and a bit before that). Are you watching live?

I doubt it. Coverage started at 8:30pm here, so nearly 3 hours ago. I'm in Australia.

Commentator just said something about the glistening axes of the farriers.

Namenic · 02/06/2022 14:20

I can’t speak for all people, but I’m an immigrant from an ex colony and enjoying it! A bit bored by the length of the ceremony, but think it’s a positive thing. My immigrant parents remember when they drove around London prior to Charles and Diana wedding waving union jacks.

BeggyMitchell · 02/06/2022 14:20

Enjoying it yes.

I'm not a royalist at all. I have Irish ancestry including some who served in 'British' forces pre- Irish War of independence.

More than that I'm fascinated with history and as the longest serving British monarch, surpassing even Queen Victoria this jubilee is history in the making.

It’s unlikely that anyone who’s not under 15 now will ever see another platinum jubilee.

Porcupineintherough · 02/06/2022 14:23

Good for you. My dad (ardently anti-monarchy) is enjoying it all too, which just shows how personality altering Alzheimers can be.

Nobody living now will ever see another one. If William succeeded to the throne tomorrow he’d have to live to be 110 to celebrate his platinum jubilee. It’s a total one off.

Yes, book on the history of the regiment is called "Up The Micks!" which underlines the regiment's feelings.

Their piece of music is called "Mick's March".

I know that the regiment has links to Ireland in the past, and I know it's the regiment's historic informal name for itself. I also know the history of the word Mick as a derogatory term for Irish people in England and I don't think it's appropriate to still use it in this day and age.

It's like people on here insisting "throwing a paddy" is a perfectly fine phrase to use. Just no.

MissFancyDay · 02/06/2022 14:36

The comment that those soldiers would be useless in a real war is one of the most ignorant things that I have read on here. They don't go into action in those outfits you know.

richardhammondsgoatee · 02/06/2022 14:38

DownNative · 02/06/2022 12:26

The skill of all those on parade is incredible every time you see it. Pure class and the professionalism is top class!

Horses look beautiful as do the uniforms.

I thought that said unicorns. I thought bloody hell they're really pushing the boat out!

Or on horses. I love comments like that, the ignorance is comical.

@TheOriginalEmu A monarch seeing 70 years on the throne won’t happen again in our lifetime. So it is once in a lifetime…

Hopefully we never see another jubilee of any kind when we end the whole fiasco.

limitedperiodonly · 02/06/2022 14:53

Little chance of them cancelling the flypast I'm afraid which is good for me. It's always my favourite bit and I get to see and hear it (deafening) live because it goes over my house. The soldiers can do a bit more than just being able to ride horsies so would be able to look after themselves in Ukraine or wherever. What a soft as marshmallow thing to say.

sashagabadon · 02/06/2022 14:58

Well I’m up there and loving it. Place is heaving however but atmosphere good. Full of Brits and tourists waving their flags and having a nice time. Enjoyed the gun salute and fly past now an ice cream then tube home. Good work by everyone involved and well done organisers. London looks amazing as ever.

sashagabadon · 02/06/2022 14:59

Not a good day for republicans 😂

You really have no idea how the British Army works have you.

Not sure if Charles will have the same affection...

Nice to see the pageantry. It can be done without having a Royal Family though.
