Should I ring in sick on last day of work

Community care, been with the company for a year and the final day is coming up.

I've had one sick day off from them in the year I've been there. If you ring, you have to ring the out of hours team who then transfer you to management whether you like it or not, who will do their best to try and persuade you to still come in as they're 'really struggling'.

I have never seen this in a job before where you're still persuaded to come in despite being ill, especially working with elderly people.

Anyway, I know it's not good but I feel like just ringing in for my final shift. They have given me a ridiculous rota that involves seeing 9 different people at lunchtime visits, as well as the morning and tea visits.

I won't get paid if i ring in, and will lose around £100 gross. They will arrange cover as they have to. Just really done with the place now

Why potentially burn bridges for the sake of a day though?

Onthelastsplash · 01/06/2022 22:40

I have worked my month notice period, this will be the final day. I know what you mean, I just don't feel like i can face another day, sick of ridiculous 7am starts too

I would if your mentally not prepared to continue.

Cascais · 01/06/2022 22:41

No

DDivaStar · 01/06/2022 22:43

I can see why you would want to you sound worn down by them.

Personally I'd rather leave with my head held high and money in my pocket.

HairyBum · 01/06/2022 22:44

I would work and say goodbye to all the nice people you’ve worked with

Neveranynamesleft · 01/06/2022 22:46

If u may need them to give you a reference at any point then just go in to work.

CiderJolly · 01/06/2022 22:47

I would go in for the clients and just because it’s the right thing to do.

Onthelastsplash · 01/06/2022 22:47

I know it's the right thing to go in really.
I asked them if they could take off some of the 9 visits as i struggle to get through them all (all back to back too) and they have ignored it.

They are short staffed every single week without fail, constant messages asking for overtime.
Stupidly agreed to do a bit for them so got another 7am start when I could have had a lie in.

YABU

its one day, just suck it up and be glad it’s your last day

Onthelastsplash · 01/06/2022 22:48

They just annoy me as they don't care whatsoever about the staff, just about getting the calls covered.
I'll go in and just be glad I'm quitting

I think be professional, go in and get your £100. It’s only one day.

MosaicBlues · 01/06/2022 22:53

You’d do the job better than hastily arranged cover - so it would be a better thing for the people you care for. The decent thing would be to go in and think “this is my last day!” I see why you don’t want to, but finish your commitment on a high. It’s a bit teenage to flunk on a job you don’t like, especially as it’s one day.

Maymaymay · 01/06/2022 22:54

Don't do it - you're not sick. Leave knowing you're not part of the problem.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 01/06/2022 22:55

It’s not professional for managers to lay guilt on the workers due to their own shortfalls.

Personally I’d your MH is suffering I would think twice, you don’t owe anyone anything nor will you be unprofessional for not working your last day.

its a them problem, not a you problem.

Onthelastsplash · 01/06/2022 22:57

I'm going to go in, think of the money

OP posts:
Vapeyvapevape · 01/06/2022 22:58

I'd go in , I'd be thinking of the people (clients) that are relying on you.

JustBkind · 01/06/2022 23:01

Think of the people you’re helping more than anything! They are relying on you! Do the right thing for you and them. Then leave with your head held so high and be so proud of yourself! New ventures await! Good luck 🤞🏻

Onthelastsplash · 01/06/2022 23:05

Thanks :)

Ahh I feel your pain I used to work as a home carer for the elderly and what you've written about them calling all the time and guilt tripping you is exactly why I left.
The clients were all lovely people but we were never given enough time, my last shift the other person who worked in the area called in as her car apparently broke down... Left me with 19 calls to do between 4pm and 10pm...hideous but glad I got to see everyone to say bye and when I walked through my front door I had a massive smile on my face... I'd done a good job and now it was over.
Go and see those lovely people and give them the best care possible, you might be the only person they see all day and they'll speak of you once you've gone as 'that lovely girl'
One more day - u got this! X

NotMushroomInEre · 01/06/2022 23:23

I'm glad you are going in. Enjoy your day and give your best to all those elderly patients. Making them smile must be priceless. It's disgusting that care workers are overworked and underpaid, and then when people leave the profession, they wonder why. We might all need someone to care for us one day.

yesthatisdrizzle · 01/06/2022 23:30

Well OP, I for one would like to say just how grateful so many of us are that you and your fellow underpaid put-upon colleagues go out there and care for people. People like my MIL who has carers three times a day, and without whom I genuinely don't know how she (or we) could cope.

Thank you.

Her mental health isn't suffering! She wants to make a point and can't be arsed to get up early. FFS...

BasicDad · 01/06/2022 23:41

She's decided to go in though. And who isn't entitled to vent a bit about sacking off theast day of a shitty job?

Good choice OP. Once it's done, it done. And if in the future, you ever need to exercise your worst case option (returning), you've not burned that bridge 👍🏻

zingally · 02/06/2022 11:03

I'd suck it up and do the final day tbh. I'd rather leave head held high, with the employer thinking well of you, and the money in my pocket.

Perhaps you could do something a bit symbolic with that £100? Have a night away? See a show? Put it towards a holiday?
