Money & time spent on advising people where to keep cool in London..??! The mayor is seriously promoting this on Twitter right now.. there is no heatwave now or forecast.. why?!

  1. are we really at that level of spoon feeding now that people can't be trusted to find a bit of shade or a shop with air con if they feel a bit hot?!
  2. do other, truly hotter, cities have these? Would have been useful for Dubai or Florida (if I was thick!!!) but London??
  3. what about all the warm places for the homeless.. much rather we point those out
  4. who is this actually for?? Just an exercise to tick a bizarre future box or am I missing something here?
  5. and why has it made me insanely furious?!

I just wanted to come back to this thread and say I told you so update. Just to say this is how quickly it goes from cardigans to heatwaves!

Ah that must feel good! I still maintain the map is a wasted resource but just my opinion. The fact he's out on Twitter giving hot weather advice today with no mention of this crucial resource is interesting.. I think it's the blatant box ticking that got my goat so much but we are where we are. Hope everybody is managing to find their own 'cool places' at this challenging time anyway Wink

Oh look. There’s a heatwave warning. Less than 2 weeks after you said planning for such a thing was ridiculous

www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jun/14/met-office-issues-heat-alert-warning-for-england

Nope, never said planning for a heatwave was silly. Said an online map of 'cool places' released over a wet weekend was silly.

Ah that must feel good!

It really did. I am absolutely that petty. It's a fault but at least I'm aware of it Grin

Thanks for being a good sport!

This is really important for elderly, vulnerable or people with young children, especially those who live in flats, crowded housing. If I knew the local library was air conditioned, for example, I might head there for a couple of hours. It's only going to get worse with global warming.

Joyfultoes · 07/07/2022 22:41

oh look @holihell 5 weeks after you stated it’s ridiculous for the London Mayor to prepare for a heatwave there is a SECOND UK heatwave: Temperatures to hit low 30s as heat-health alert issued www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62084934

holihell · 08/07/2022 07:58

@Joyfultoes good morning & gosh that must feel good, to dig out an old post just to get your 'I told you so' in....except I didn't take issue with mr khan issuing a heatwave warning. I took issue with him funding a map of 'cool spaces' which I deemed to be unnecessary for a variety of reasons- some have been argued with validity by PP & I accept that - I also found it bizzare to release said map WEEKS in advance of any seriously hot weather. Maybe he'll retweet it today?! I am in no way a climate change denier. I am in no way a denier that heat kills. I am all for sensible resources that guard against both. I simply didn't think mr khan's map was the most effective solution.

I don't live in London so avoid it at all costs during heat waves. But I was in Avignon a few years back and would have really welcomed this there. I didn't know where water fountains were, or which places you could dive into that had air con.

In London not everywhere is air conditioned by any stretch so a map seems useful. If places can be added it's also something which will get more useful over several years so it needs starting before it's essential.
