No Jubilee decorations in Northern Ireland

Futball13 · 01/06/2022 12:14

Preparing for a party this weekend and thought I would double up as a Jubilee party...but to my surprise when I went to three shops,-Asda, B and M bargains and Home Bargains there wasn't a single paper cup, plate or decoration for the Jubilee. I was expecting large displays when I walked in. AIBU to expect to have the choice to buy decorations in local shops like in the rest of Britain? Obviously (like in the rest of Britain) some people do not support the royal family and will choose not to celebrate. I was just a bit shocked shops were missing out on the profit from sales.

I think you may have missed the boat, plenty to be had a month or 2 or even longer ago in NW Eng but absolutely nothing for the past fortnight or so... thankfully I had some from the last jubilee but was hoping to pick up a few bits last minute. No chance.

TheKeatingFive · 01/06/2022 21:11

Good on you, it makes sense! Although the cost of fuel now it depends how far you have to go!

Well there is that. But all my extended family are in newry so we'd be up there anyway, living up to stereotypes of Southerners crossing the border 😆

TheKeatingFive · 01/06/2022 20:57

It says

The term is widely used but more so by Unionists. It is considered derogatory by many Nationalists as they claim it belittles the island of Ireland because of the conations of it being merely a small off-shore island of Britain.

Im not sure what you think I was 'going for', but to counter your 'everyone uses it, including all the nationalists, nothing controversial about it, look at my definition' I think it's achieved it's purpose.

On the contrary, I didn't once argue "everyone uses it.....including all the nationalists"!

You'd have a point if I did. You were dealing in absolutes - not I. I merely said I know of lots of Catholics and Protestants who use it in the dictionary definition of the word.

CAIN's explanation itself suggests a significant chunk of Nationalists use 'mainland'. The phrase "many Nationalists" is non-specific anyway.

At any rate, 'mainland' doesn't even refer to the entire island of Ireland! The definition only provides for the part that is part of the UK as per the GFA....Northern Ireland.

Literally.

Ergo, it's not offensive or derogatory. I think a lot of Nationalists and Republicans understand that without a problem. Unfortunately, some of them continue to make a mountain out of a molehill.

TheKeatingFive · 01/06/2022 21:22

Ergo, it's not offensive or derogatory.

Thing is you don't have the right to tell a community that, just like a white person wouldn't have the right to tell a black person that a particular word with racist connotations isn't controversial. Not even if 'but I know lots of black people who use it'.

you've have two posters from the nationalist community on this thread tell you they find it a sectarian word, I've posted an outside source that says that, and it really shouldn't take a genius to understand why. So use whatever term you god damn like, but don't claim it's not problematic to some in the nationalist community because you know it is.

Hellothere22 · 01/06/2022 21:29

There are definitely no flags celebrating the jubilee in Portaferry, I think you're getting mixed up

DownNative · 01/06/2022 21:32

TheKeatingFive · 01/06/2022 21:06

Seriously, 'mainland' is far away from being particularly controversial in Northern Ireland.

You can keep telling yourself that if you want. It really doesn't take much in the way of deductive reasoning to understand why it would be, but you do you hmm.

Well, that's circular reasoning in relation to my statement that "'mainland' is far away from being particularly controversial in Northern Ireland"!

It's hardly particularly controversial whereas many other things are.

And cherrypicked as well since you snip what's inconvenient out.

But you do you.....

Gembem · 01/06/2022 21:34

I work for a large organisation in NI, predominately Protestant and we often travel to England for work/have meetings with those based there and I can say with 100% confidence that no one has ever referred to England as the mainland in our workplace, and to do so would be seen as highly unprofessional. It just wouldn't be used.

Also, regardless of it having the potential to offend people, it just sounds ridiculous in my opinion. And I'm of the side that would apparently be happy to use it if we go down the road of assuming one side versus the other!

Doveyouknow · 01/06/2022 21:40

I am in the Highlands and Tesco is selling bunting etc. Maybe they have just sold out.

No, CAIN never once states that 'mainland' is a sectarian term. All it states is that an unspecified proportion of Nationalists claim its derogatory.

Those are two very different things.

Indeed, CAIN doesn't come close to suggesting the Nationalist community as a whole views it as derogatory. It refers only to the beliefs of an unspecified number.

You switch between suggesting a majority of Nationalists and some....which is it?

It's obviously some since that's what CAIN points to which isn't the community itself, but a section of the community.

Once again, you snipped my post in order to take it out of context. Funny that(!)

Embarrassing you've tried to compare 'mainland' with racist terms. Now, THATS really reaching!

emmetgirl · 01/06/2022 21:52

🤷‍♀️

Gooseysgirl · 01/06/2022 21:54

Jesus what happened? I thought we were just here to find some fecking bunting 😆

TheHateIsNotGood · 01/06/2022 21:55

No Jubilee stuff on display for purchase in the shop(s) round here - SW England. Although the 'town centre' has plenty up.

I've dug out an old big Union Jack and stuck it on a makeshift flagpole. As since has a neighbour too....I might have to get up early and make some bunting, not that my fuck off big flag on a wonky pole compares much to his nylon thing on a straight pole.....

I wouldn't overthink it OP. should take own advice; ahem.

It's now very political and we are going round in circles, great fun for all the family! Grab a "fleg" and popcorn sure it's all kicking off.

Anyone got any pallets?

JaneJeffer · 01/06/2022 21:56

You don't have these problems when you live in a republic Grin

ManateeFair · 01/06/2022 22:03

For someone who lives in Northern Ireland, you seem to be woefully ignorant of Northern Ireland.

rubbleonthedoub · 01/06/2022 22:13

To catholic's or nationalists mainland is offensive or a at least a bit tone deaf in mixed company. It is a signal of your background as a Protestant/unionist. Like having your toaster in the cupboard lol

It is also something people from the Catholic / nationalist/ Republican side would not say.

In the same vein they say the north of Ireland or the the occupied 6 countries.

Oh and im from here

Step back, step back! Let them fight it out!

Yup. Mainland use in business circles would indicate you have really very little ability to read the room.

StoneofDestiny · 01/06/2022 23:44

And the original point from OP....😂😂😂 leads to a big on line bun fight (a Mumsnet tea party 😂😂.

Anyway - so glad my home city of Glasgow has dutifully ignored the whole Jubilee distraction from important things, like getting shot of Johnson and his lying toe rag government.

Mamai90 · 01/06/2022 23:51

You're not in Britain though. Northern Ireland isn't part of Britain.

And before anyone starts, no I'm not being pedantic.

Mamai90 · 01/06/2022 23:57

CupidStunt22 · 01/06/2022 16:31

Everyone uses that terminology! NI is part of the UK, a small part. There is very much a mainland. Ireland is a different country to NI.

'Everyone' certainly doesn't.

indoorplantqueen · 02/06/2022 17:23

I'm from a nationalist background and I can tell you that you would not hear 'mainland' being used on the Falls or any other nationalist area, unless they were being sarcastic.

DonnaHadDee · 02/06/2022 17:56

Lots and lots of the stuff where I live, and I had noticed it in the shops a few weeks ago. While I have no interest in it myself, it's a DUP stronghold here and I see many neighbours making an effort :)
