To get constipated every time I go away?

It's really unreasonable right? How can I not get constipated? It really ruins a holiday. Help.

If this is a known problem for you, what do you do to mitigate against? Up your fruit intake, drink more plain water, ensure that you don't go carb-mad etc?

rainbowandglitter · 30/05/2022 23:07

Same. No idea why. Never ever have constipation at home.

Anotherusernamethisweek · 30/05/2022 23:09

@rainbowandglitter same. Never at home. Perfectly healthy and no long term health issues. It's psychological 😩

I don't go abroad any more but when I did I definately ate less fruit and veg and was probably dehydrated, and very inactive compared to at home. So not surprising really.

RandomMess · 30/05/2022 23:12

I take psyllium husks when away.

The change in hardness of water affects me and eating less fruit & veg.

RedSoloCup · 30/05/2022 23:13

Not happened to me but has to a friend, she says it's psychological as she doesn't want to go where she's not comfortable

Stichintime · 30/05/2022 23:19

Same. It usually takes a couple of days to adjust.

bloodynewusernameagain · 30/05/2022 23:24

I always thought it was differences in the water. Plus travelling there usually means more sedentary period of time before reaching destination.
Laxido or/ and suppositories depending on how desperate things get. I fucking hate being constipated on holiday/away.

trainnane · 30/05/2022 23:25

I'm the same. Really annoying

LadyDP · 30/05/2022 23:27

Its the water. Whenever I go to an area with hard water I am affected in the same way

Stillfunny · 30/05/2022 23:28

Me too. I think it is physiological as no reason not to. I bring Senokot and take one most nights when away. Just keeps things normal.

BurscoughBooths · 30/05/2022 23:28

My Uncle Terry always takes a packet of AllBran on holiday

Formerpupil · 30/05/2022 23:34

I saw a tik tok about this the other day weirdly! Google the ILU massage, it’s supposed to help.

Odoreida · 30/05/2022 23:34

This definitely happens to me - it's the stress of the travel. I always eat loads of fruit and vegetables and don't change that on holiday. I try and remember to bring laxatives. My last holiday I was quite relaxed (travelling with friends who were sorting car hire etc) and it didn't happen at all! Such a pleasant surprise

MarpleFan · 30/05/2022 23:39

I was reading an article about this recently. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find it (will post if I can) but maybe this will help. www.livestrong.com/article/13770033-travelers-constipation/

VanCleefArpels · 30/05/2022 23:40

Yep! It’s such a thing for me that we have a little celebration when I manage my first poo of the holiday. Usually regular as clockwork.

MarpleFan · 30/05/2022 23:40

Actually easier than I thought (apologies, it’s from the Daily Fail - don’t judge me)

avamiah · 30/05/2022 23:41

I used to think I had a urinary tract infection when I travelled to a far off location and didn’t see at least 5 signs for pharmacies.I convinced myself I hadn’t drank enough water on the plane and I was dehydrated and couldn’t wee and would end up in hospital.😂
This was about 13 years ago and I was in Mexico.😬

mrsmacmc · 30/05/2022 23:41

@LadyDP same here 😩 never found a cure for it apart from drink bottled water 💦

Thestoppedfan · 30/05/2022 23:42

Me too I actually googled it this week and didn’t really get anywhere. For me it’s every time I fly- no matter how long the distance, could it be the air pressure? It’s definitely not nerves or length of not moving as it happens when I visit in-laws and the flight there is only 30 minutes.

EatYourVegetables · 30/05/2022 23:43

Same! I need to get used to a new toilet. I have my home toilet and my work toilet (just one, although I work in a many toileted building), and everything else needs three days, a curry and six pints the evening before, and then a strong coffee in the morning.

Anotherusernamethisweek · 30/05/2022 23:52

@EatYourVegetables 🤣🤣🤣

gulliblestravels · 30/05/2022 23:54

Its the well known phenomenon- holiday bum 🤣

saleorbouy · 30/05/2022 23:54

If you go to a hotter destination it's likely caused by dehydration from the heat and also Air-conditioning.
Drink a cup of water hourly, also take something higher in fibre. Figs or dates good. Otherwise there water soluble sachets available in pharmacies.

ProfessorFusspot · 30/05/2022 23:58

There's some evidence that changes in altitude impact the digestive system - constipation, gas, bloating and sometimes even diarrhea - and some people may take longer to readjust than others. Any plane trip could trigger something, but also being in a different place - e.g., you live at sea level but go on holiday in the mountains. Generally the advice is to take it easy at first - lots of "safe" water/liquids, skip alcohol, no massive changes in diet, eating a little less than usual, and getting plenty of sleep, and moderate but not super-strenuous exercise the first few days.
