to expect strangers visiting our house to ASK before using the loo?

I probably am, but yesterday a BG engineer came out to look at why our heating wasn't coming on. The tank etc is in my bedroom. I heard the light of my ensuite go on while he was up there and assumed he was checking the water or something but went up later to find the toilet lid up so he'd obviously gone in there for a pee.

Now I know I'm a bit anal funny but I don't like people using my toilet. (We have 3 in this house and DH and the kids use the other 2) I have a white carpet in that room, because I don't wear shoes up there, and the room is untidy because no-one else goes in there. It badly needs cleaning too- esp the toilet but as I say, its a private room.

If I'm at someone's house I always ask to use the loo. Had he done so I would have directed him to the main bathroom or the cloakroom, both of which have laminate floor. I just find him very rude to effectively be wandering round someone's house, plus the embarrassment of having someone in an area that is private. (and in outdoor shoes on a white carpet GGRRRRR)

OK I am BU but wouldn't you expect someone not to go into an ensuite without asking? I wouldn't if I was visiting family let alone on a business call.

I have to say I wouldn't use anyones ensuite without being directed to it after asking for the loo

I jsut see them as a private toilet for the couple/owner really

dooley1 · 13/01/2008 13:52

well if he was working in the room and there was atoliet there and he needed to go it would be a bit wierd to come and find you to ask if he could go.
different to if a visitor is sitting in your lounge, more reasonable to just say can I use the loo then

LadyOfWaffle · 13/01/2008 13:52

Well, he was already in your bedroom saw the loo and needing a piss... it's not like he was somewhere then went hunting through your house to find the loo.

dooley1 · 13/01/2008 13:53

exactly LoW

mumzyof2 · 13/01/2008 13:54

I think maybe a bit unreasonable. However, if i was the man upstairs, I would have found and used a main bathroom, not your ensuite. They are, of course, in your bedroom, because they are intented for your private use. but not sure itd bother me too much.

edam · 13/01/2008 13:55

I think YAB a bit U, tbh. LoW's right, he didn't go out of his way to find your en suite.

anyone lse but a builder and i would have agreed with you

and i dont know why it is that i actually expect buildders not to have basic manners - in the situation you described i would be pissed off at the loo seat being left up rather than the asking

The last time I asked a grownup if I could take a piss was about 35 years ago

I hope he fixed the heating!

BBBee · 13/01/2008 14:00

When I first read this was quite shocked that it would be an issue! I thought you were talking about, say, lose relatives, or a friend of your DH.

But its not a general toilet, and its not just a visitor, its a person who does not know you at or is visiting you at all, its an engineer!

I would be annoyed that the en-suite was used, but would not get worked up about it, unless he cleaned it for you, now that would be embarrassing.

lazarou · 13/01/2008 14:13

Did you leave your dirty knickers sunny side up on the floor? Is that why you're

you have a white carpet in your house??? NO wonder you're so anal about anyone else using your loo

Sidge · 13/01/2008 14:20

I would imagine he just headed for the nearest loo, which happened to be the ensuite one.

If I was working in a bedroom and needed a wee I wouldn't trek through the house to ask permission, especially if there was a toilet right there.

So yes, YAB a little U.

Roobie · 13/01/2008 14:26

If I'd known a plumber was going into my bedroom to fix the tank in there I would have tidied up a bit, including the bog.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 13/01/2008 14:31

You have your own toilet from which your husband & kids are banned?

Gosh, everyone on this thread is being terribly tactful (except Cod, naturally)

tinx · 13/01/2008 14:32

hi all
i think that the bg man should have asked.
who knows, next time you could find the milk man sniffing your knickers

Jacanne · 13/01/2008 14:34

The OP made me smile - very worried about her white carpet but toilet badly in need of cleaning .

RustyBear · 13/01/2008 14:35

You should probably think yourself lucky he used the toilet - did you ever see that TV programme where they secretly filmed builders/workman - one of them was in the loft, peed into an old vase & then emptied it in the water tank....

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 13/01/2008 14:37

Quite, Jacanne
