to expect strangers visiting our house to ASK before using the loo?

I probably am, but yesterday a BG engineer came out to look at why our heating wasn't coming on. The tank etc is in my bedroom. I heard the light of my ensuite go on while he was up there and assumed he was checking the water or something but went up later to find the toilet lid up so he'd obviously gone in there for a pee.

Now I know I'm a bit anal funny but I don't like people using my toilet. (We have 3 in this house and DH and the kids use the other 2) I have a white carpet in that room, because I don't wear shoes up there, and the room is untidy because no-one else goes in there. It badly needs cleaning too- esp the toilet but as I say, its a private room.

If I'm at someone's house I always ask to use the loo. Had he done so I would have directed him to the main bathroom or the cloakroom, both of which have laminate floor. I just find him very rude to effectively be wandering round someone's house, plus the embarrassment of having someone in an area that is private. (and in outdoor shoes on a white carpet GGRRRRR)

OK I am BU but wouldn't you expect someone not to go into an ensuite without asking? I wouldn't if I was visiting family let alone on a business call.

Actually at risk of allowing myself to be virtually bombarded wtih rotton tomato's I also have my own ensuite. My reason for this is we live in a rented house with a carpet in the ensuite - DP and DS in particular are bad aims and there is nothing worse than a carpet that smells of wee. Also we have a spare room that DP wanted to take over as a room for his Xbox so the compromise is he has his space where he acts like a big kid and I have my own space where I can generally do all my girly stuff without an audience. Its great and it works. I am not anal about other people using my ensuite though - my friends use it when they come over and its not a problem. Think I would mind an engineer using it though - particularly if he sprayed the carpet

I have a white carpet in my private bathroom yes that no-one else uses... I haven't banned DH from using it- he chooses not to. The kids don't need to use it- our room is at the top of the house so they aren't up there and there is nothing in that room that there isn't in the main bathroom.

He would have had to walk over the dirty laundry to get to the toilet because I'd just got it out of the laundry bin to sort when he turned up... thinking about it I'm amazed he didn't pee all over the floor.. the room has a sloping ceiling and we had to move the toilet along when we took out the shower to put in a bath. As I don't stand up to pee the reduced head height doesn't matter. Well he won't do that again

It is an ensuite cod- what else would you call it? "bathroom in my bedroom" takes longer to say

YABU

DH has a mate who is a builder, he was on teh phone to DH "anyway, I'd better go 'cos I've just done a big dump in this woman's toilet and I've turned the water off so I can't flush it away! I'll just have to go turn it on"

When he hung up, he turned around and teh woman was standing behind him with a face like this - he said "did you hear that?" and she just nodded silently.

I have my own poncetastic loo too. I'm the only one that uses it. Although I possibly wouldn't physically hurt my immediate family if they used it.

I'd mow any of you lot down if you came near it though. MY loo. MINE.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 13/01/2008 14:56

YANBU but be grateful he didn't pee in your sink like someone did on House of Horrors!

ernest · 13/01/2008 15:03

any carpet, let alone a white one in a bathroom. yuk yuk yuk

and yes, yabu. If he was working in he kitchen and went rummaging up in your bedroom, then I'd understand.

Madlentileater · 13/01/2008 15:22

personally, I'm always puzzled by the use of ensuite as if it's a noun- sounds like an adjective to me- 'yes, we have a shower and toilet which are ensuite' or maybe even en suite.....should this be in pedants corner?
and, I think a carpet of any colour in a bathroom is asking for trouble!

Think op's annoyance is more due to the fact that her loo was dirty and laundry all over the floor, and the builder would think she was dirrrty

Iota · 13/01/2008 17:53

I agree with those who said that he probably just used the nearest available loo - no masterplan to cause offence.

Fireflyfairy2 · 13/01/2008 17:53

Am astonished that you all have such a low opinion of builders. You all must have had very bad experiences with them.

Carpet in a bathroom is mank.

If your toilet badly needed washing, was your carpet clean? Do you clean the carpet but leave the dirty loo?

BethMK · 14/01/2008 16:46

Ooh, this is all a bit mean isn't it? This guy has gone wondering into another private room in the house without asking. I'm sure OP didn't expect him just to do that or she would have tidied up. Would it really have been so difficult for him to come and ask if he could use the loo?

I had a delivery guy in recently. He asked if he could use the toilet, then broke the flush and left without saying anything, that was a bit cheeky.

JeremyVile · 14/01/2008 16:51

Take this as a prompt to keep your loo clean enough to not be embarassed by it.

hifi · 14/01/2008 16:52

dont have carpet if you are so bothered about bathroom hygene. do people who are so fussy about loos never use public ones?

SorenLorensen · 14/01/2008 16:55

I would love my own bathroom. Just for me. I would have a big pile of books in there and a BIG LOCK on the door and the seat would never be left up and there would never be wee on the floor and the seat...oooh, it would be lovely.

stleger · 14/01/2008 17:03

I was amazed elsewhere at the number of ladies who consider their ensuite personal property. Ours is known as the en s--t.
