To wait to select flights seats til we do online check in?

2x adults and 2x dc flying at the very end of August with easyjet. We've only reserved tickets, not specified seats, and added some hold luggage.

Aibu to think that there'll be time to select vaguely close to each other seats when I do the online check in?

We've a 7yo so one of us adults will sit as close to him as possible (hopefully next to), and the 10yo is happy sitting wherever - though of course if she is close to one of us that'd be good.

Does everyone pay the extra to get their seats allocated at the time of booking?

We always pay as want to sit together, but depends on how bothered you are or how long flight is maybe

SuperSange · 30/05/2022 15:46

If you want to be together, you do it when booking. I don't think you allocate seats on check in.

Sciurus83 · 30/05/2022 15:46

Depends how much you want to sit together, might be loads of space might be none. I always book seats at time of purchasing flights

Inkyblue123 · 30/05/2022 15:46

Reserve them now, why are you waiting ? The plane seat configuration is not going to change between now and your holiday

StrangeCondition · 30/05/2022 15:46

If you definitely want to sit together I'd pay up and get the seats booked early, otherwise you run the risk of sitting separately, but they will seat an adult with a child

fossilsmorefossils · 30/05/2022 15:47

As long as you don't ask people on the flight to change seats if you don't like what you're allocated.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/05/2022 15:48

I would not risk a 10 yo girl sitting alone. You need to book the seats as early as possible so that each child is with an adult.

Or book so that one adult sits with them both each way, so you both get a child free flight and don’t have to pay to book that fourth seat.

Just seemed daft to pay £8 per person per direction to do something I can do when we do the online check in. I think it opens about a month before.

£8 is nothing on top of everything else. I'd not be waiting until last minute if I wanted to sit together

Hollyhead · 30/05/2022 15:50

It’s risky - I nearly risked it with TUi as £64 seemed like a mad amount to pay but I decided against it as our Dc would be terrified in the event of turbulence. I logged in for checkin on the first day it opened and I’d say 80% seats were booked abs very few together.

kirinm · 30/05/2022 15:50

Would Easyjet be sensible enough to know a 3 year old shouldn't be sat alone or do we have to pay for the pleasure of explaining that to them?

Ostryga · 30/05/2022 15:51

Yeah I wouldn’t wait. Summer holidays is mainly families and you’ll end up with no seats together. Just include the cost in the holiday.

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 30/05/2022 15:52

As long as if you can't get seats together you don't expect others to move. There have been a few threads about this just today.

So if they sit an adult with a child then why pre book and pre pay?

Most airlines will seat an under 12 year old with an adult, but they wouldn’t necessarily sit the whole travelling party together.

I wouldn't do this. And I'd know at online check in not on the flight.

We aren't bothered about all sitting as a foursome.

£32 to skip the angst?

parietal · 30/05/2022 15:57

They will seat adult near a child but that could be in front or behind.

Also middle seats are least popular so you'd probably end up with middle seats with adults in a row behind kids.

WonderingWanda · 30/05/2022 15:59

I always pay because the airline definition of sitting an under 12 with an adult is not right next to each other. It can be be in front, behind or across the aisle. If your kids won't mind that then no need for you to pay. My youngest dc in particular wouldn't cope with that.

I don't have any angst

It's £64.

As far as I recall, you don't get to choose the seat for free when you check in.

All that will happen is you'll be allocated seats at that point - so you'll know which you have - but they could be anywhere.

What do you propose to do if when you check in you're allocated 6a, 12e, 24b and 37c?

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 30/05/2022 16:04

This happened to me and dh when we went on honeymoon. He’d booked the flights but not the seats. We were put one in front of the other on the way out there and across the aisle from each other on the way back. Really romantic. At least we were near each other I guess. They were long flights too, to the Caribbean.

Tinysnickers · 30/05/2022 16:05

I'm not sure if you realise, when you check in with easyjet if you haven't paid to choose seats they will be randomly allocated. You don't get any choice in it unless you pay. And if most of the plabe is full of people who paid, those randomly allocated seats could be rows and rows apart.

JustTheOneSwan · 30/05/2022 16:06

It's £64.

Don't do it then.
Personally I'd pay that not to sit with my family but if you're not going to stress about it (and start threads asking that exact question) take the chance.
Enjoy your holiday.
