To wait to select flights seats til we do online check in?

2x adults and 2x dc flying at the very end of August with easyjet. We've only reserved tickets, not specified seats, and added some hold luggage.

Aibu to think that there'll be time to select vaguely close to each other seats when I do the online check in?

We've a 7yo so one of us adults will sit as close to him as possible (hopefully next to), and the 10yo is happy sitting wherever - though of course if she is close to one of us that'd be good.

Does everyone pay the extra to get their seats allocated at the time of booking?

OP’s already got four seats together without paying @Luredbyapomegranate.

Funkyslippers · 29/07/2022 10:51

BeenthereGotTee it's £8 per person per flight so will never just be £8. OP is looking at at least £32

CharlotteOH · 29/07/2022 10:51

Yabvu to risk your children sitting wherever and to be ‘not bothered’ if they’re with you.

Yes, families pay the extra in advance to sit together. Think of it not as an extra payment but as that single travellers get a discount because they can be stuck in any old place.

Yes well aware of that. There are just some costs that are associated with travelling now and you either go with it or take the risk. Current flights for myself we're looking at 45 pound per seat. We are minoring how quickly the cabin is filling up.

Monitoring

BalloonsAndWhistles · 29/07/2022 11:08

Just pay if you want to sit together, don’t be tight. We always pay for extra legroom seats as DH is 6’3’’ and luckily no-one has ever asked us to moved but I’d be so cross if they did.

crumpet · 29/07/2022 11:09

Why not pay £32 to guarantee 2 seats together?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/07/2022 11:16

Because I didn't need to.

Done - checked in online and been allocated a row - 3 together then one across the aisle. No need for us to preselected and pay for seats.

I thought your flight was at the end of August?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/07/2022 11:28

It is. Check in is open now.

It’s not nothing. It’s £64 for the return trip. Good for you @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz. If only everyone would just refuse to pay this profiteering nonsense would just stop.

If no one ever paid for seat reservations they would just put ticket prices up across the board.

10HailMarys · 29/07/2022 11:32

Glad you got seats together - although as you said earlier it doesn't really matter that much as you weren't that bothered about sitting next to each other anyway. In your situation, ie a relatively short flight with two kids who were fine to sit on their own if necessary, I wouldn't have paid to reserve seats either.

As a childless adult, I wouldn't be that thrilled if I was seated next to an unsupervised seven-year-old if that seven-year-old wasn't quiet and well-behaved, but your son sounds like a dream - I'd be more than happy to sit next to a little one who was happily plugged into headphones and playing on his Switch! I did sit next to a lone kid slightly older than your son on a flight once - I think she was probably about nine? - and her parents asked if it was OK first. She was absolute delight. The flight was four hours and she spent all of it either engrossed in her book or drawing. Her dad came to check on her a couple of times and she said 'Daddy, I'm FINE, I'm enjoying the peace and quiet' Grin

SuzyQ12 · 29/07/2022 11:33

Same for us, checked in online as soon as it opened and got four seats together on both flights.

Oh I am used to 24 hour check in.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/07/2022 11:46

Course it’s fine, if that’s what you want.

Well she won’t because as she just said, she’s got seats together.

Even though OP has updated to say that she has checked in online and been allocated seats together (without paying any extra)?

Why do you think they would be split up?

fossilsmorefossils · 30/05/2022 15:47

As long as you don't ask people on the flight to change seats if you don't like what you're allocated.

This.

Highfivemum · 29/07/2022 12:17

Easy jet are better than Ryanair but it isn’t worth the risk as it’s a family holiday and it starts at the airport. My DF did what you are doing with two DC. ( single mum). She was near front, her DS 3 rows behind ( age6) and her DD second to back row. ( age 9). She said it ruined the start of holiday for her.

KatherineJaneway · 29/07/2022 12:17

You got lucky

Blossomtoes · 29/07/2022 12:49

KatherineJaneway · 29/07/2022 12:17

You got lucky

She didn’t. We never pay for seat selection and we’ve never been separated.

maddy68 · 29/07/2022 12:52

It's also a massive pain of one wants a drink and thevobe with the card is ten rows away even if they are haoiy being seperated why be a cheapskate for just a few £ to have a more enjoyable trip

Threelittlelambs · 29/07/2022 13:05

We’ve never been separated either. I don’t think it’s adds to the trip to sit together. I mean we go in buses and trains and have split to sit down. Hardest going to make much difference is it?

Happy for someone else to look after the kids whilst I grab a bit of peace.

All very well paying for two seats together and then complain you have a child next to you!

Because if you’re happy to be separated, being together doesn’t make for a more enjoyable trip, you literally don’t care. We’re grown ups with our own credit cards and we can buy our own drinks. Having said that, we’ve never been separated despite always being cheapskates.

I'm going on holiday with my boyfriend in September and we aren't booking seats together, we'll take our chances at check in. We'd rather spend the additional money on a meal or something, and the outbound flight is early so we'll probably just sleep through it. We're not bothered about sitting together.
