Babysitter giving baby two feeds from one bottle

Bells3032 · 30/05/2022 08:07

We went to a wedding last night. We hired a babysitter through the (well respected) Hotel. She came highly qualified and with 40 years experience and we were allowed to use a friend's room for her to be in during the festivities.

She sent us messages about 725 and 915 to say she'd had her formula and when I packed up I saw two empty formula bottles in the bin.

When I got home I noticed there was only one dirty bottle. I'd given her five sterile ones just in case though she should have had two feeds max in that time

Should I be worried.

When we got home I gave her another feed which she vomited everywhere (which she rarely does).,

Do I need to be worried about ecoli or aibu?

Op come on. Using a bottle twice is hardly going to give her ecoli!!! It was a one off, not ideal but nothing to be frantic about.

HappyHappyHermit · 30/05/2022 08:09

Don't worry, she'll be absolutely fine.

moita · 30/05/2022 08:10

She'll be fine

Oysterbabe · 30/05/2022 08:10

You're being a bit pfb I think. She'll be fine.

whoami24601 · 30/05/2022 08:11

How old is baby?

greenbirdsong · 30/05/2022 08:11

Yes hardly ideal but nothing to worry about OP.

Same1977 · 30/05/2022 08:13

7.25 and 9.15 (assuming she sent the message straight after feeds ) is less than two hours between each.Formula can stay in room temperature for 2 hour (anything drank from after an hour meant to be discarded ).
My partner has done similar (he learned quickly to keep timings of these things ) ,but nothing ever happened.

Could it be she simply had too much?
Also depending of the age of the baby there is different level of worry involved.
I'd suggest simply monitoring her and if you see anything that worries you call doctors.
This is a small error ( although I suspect a deliberate one ?Did she think it didn't matter?)

All the best.Dont stress yourself silly.

esoryelneh · 30/05/2022 08:16

She will be fine...

Bells3032 · 30/05/2022 08:18

*baby is 5 months though was 6 weeks early so developmentally she's closer to 4 months.

Ecoli lives in formula that's why you're meant to sterilise so it's not completely out of the realm

I was under the impression pre made/ ready to feed formula was sterile.

Powdered formula isn't sterile.

I'm sure she'll be fine.

Even at 4 months she is miles ahead of let's say 2 week old baby in terms of immunity.Dont stress yourself too much.

GreenIsle · 30/05/2022 08:24

Maybe she washed the bottle and then reused.

CecilyP · 30/05/2022 08:26

No you don’t have to worry about e-coli. It’s possible she could have a mild stomach upset. Seems odd to have used the same bottle twice. Do you think she made up a full bottle and your DD had half at each feed?

toastedbagiel · 30/05/2022 08:26

I imagine your DD will be completely fine however this is something I would be raising with the hotel, because it's not the correct procedure for formula feeding. It depends on the 'set up' though, are they just basic baby sitters who need a individual instructions or are they supposed to be w qualified and experienced?

dementedpixie · 30/05/2022 08:27

Was it powdered or ready to feed formula?
Ready to feed has been heat treated so won't have the bacteria found in powdered formula

SandysMam · 30/05/2022 08:28

I wouldn’t leave my 5 month old baby with a stranger babysitter I had never met before. A nursery environment is different, others for accountability etc but at that age, baby is just too vulnerable. The bottle thing is conformation of that, even though sure baby will be fine.

Dinotour · 30/05/2022 08:31

No they'll be absolutely fine.

mum11970 · 30/05/2022 08:33

Not something to get worked up about even if she just rinsed the bottle between feeds, but she probably washed the bottle and sterilised with boiling water.

meltypuff · 30/05/2022 08:35

They should know better! Complain! Not pfb at all as some people are saying Hmm

How on earth is this a helpful comment?

Good for you, you win parent points over the poster that had a babysitter for whatever reason they needed to. You are allowed to feel smug all day now.

OP - I’m sure baby will be fine - as others have said your baby isn’t teeny tiny any more - plenty are on early solids at that age, plus In sure they are picking things up around them and putting them in their mouths by now (it’s been a while since mine were wee - I think they do that by five months from memory!) Don’t feel bad. X

So unnecessary to make the OP feel extra guilty when she has already done it

Bells3032 · 30/05/2022 08:38

@toastedbagiel Not a basic nanny. I wouldn't have left her if so. These are well experienced nanny's who even have looked after the royal family etc apparently. They're meant to be the best. Ofsted registered and crb checked and with decades of experience.

@SandysMam i didn't ask for your opinion on using a babysitter. She was in the hotel with me and prefer her there than at my home over an hour away.

@dementedpixie ready to feed. But still has some bacteria in it thays why you're meant to discard after two hours (though I've always been told an hour if they have drunk out of it)

She's just thrown up part of her breakfast too. She rarely throws up after feeds. However she is sounding a bit snotty and like she has a cough so hopefully just a cold

OP posts:
ThettaReddast · 30/05/2022 08:39

She may have washed and sterilised the bottle with boiling water between feeds, but with pre mixed formula and less then two hours between feeds I wouldn’t worry, baby will be fine.

LateAF · 30/05/2022 08:39

I think you should raise it so the babysitter doesn’t do it again to another baby (she may not know better). No reason to do two feeds from same bottle unless absolutely necessary.

But your baby will be fine- sounds like the feeds were quite close.

And ignore the rude posters mocking you for concern about your “pfb” - it’s completely normal to be worried about such incidents. You follow the recommended guidelines and would expect a qualified babysitter to do the same. It might not be seriously negligent but it is below a professional standard of care.

toastedbagiel · 30/05/2022 08:40

In that situation I would raise a formal complaint.
