15 shirts a week

theonlygirl · 28/05/2022 09:02

DS2 starts big school in September, meaning there will be 15 shirts in the laundry each week. DH 5, DS1 5, DS2 5.
no issue washing and drying them but it will be a cold day in hell before I stand ironing their shirts. I don't use a tumbledryer so they all definitely need ironing.

Option 1 - make them iron their own.
Option 2 - drycleaners

Curious to know what others do

Cereal is shit in a box!

That's not true. Some cereals - weetabix, shredded wheat, all bran, even shred dies - are perfectly reasonable breakfasts for kids off to do a whole day at school. Don't be sanctimonious.

I'm vegan so cheese or tuna in a wrap isn't my idea of a good time but what's so very wrong with it? Bit of carb, bit of protein. Veg heavy dinner at night and/or salad with it, where's the issue? Could be a lot bloody worse. It would be a less good lunch for a middle-aged sedentary woman in an office perhaps but for kids walking to/from school or bus stop, doing PE and maybe activities and growing, it's alright.

What an odd thing to get worked up about @Quincythequince
Teens starting the day with a bowl of cereal and milk is hardly the cause of obesity Hmm . It is a FAR better option than what 95% of teens do, I should imagine.

Cereal is crap! Nutritionally speaking, utter crap.

It’s a very British thing (and US and look at their health status) to feed their kids and it’s minimal effort and cheap to say the least.

It’s generally high sugar, low fibre and empty in many respects.

There are many Better things to feed children to start their day off right, if you can be bothered to do so.

They’re better than some sure, but they’re still rubbish!

No, they’re not a reasonable breakfast to have every day. Not at all.

Delinathe · 28/05/2022 14:59

They’re better than some sure, but they’re still rubbish!

No they're not. They're whole grains with little and in some cases no added sugar. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them.

Are you low-carb, by any chance.

Delinathe · 28/05/2022 14:59

And they are not low-fibre! Do you know how to read a packet?!

So, what is the only acceptable breakfast?

Seasidemumma77 · 28/05/2022 15:01

For s few years I had 4dc with school shirts, invested in M&S non iron shirts

Nope, not low carb.

Look at the nutrition and health claims hat can be made on them? Very few indeed.

Kellogs is even trying to get cereal nutrition info only included when it’s with milk, as even the good ones are very bad on their own.

Cereal is a lazy, cheap option but it is the British way!

I let me kids eat it sometimes as an after school snack once they’re back from sports as it’s quick easy source of sugar!

Delinathe · 28/05/2022 15:02

I think you need to acknowledge, Quincy, that some children are just more capable than others. For some, making their own lunch is not delegating a "basic parental responsibility", it's giving their child the basic responsibility of feeding themselves, and if it's not a strain on them, why on earth not. If your kid isn't up to that, it's right for you to do it, but to some kids it's simply not a big deal,

redskyatnight · 28/05/2022 15:02

No wonder we have a nation of unhealthy kids if cereal and cheese in a wrap is considered nutritious food!

did I say I considered it nutritious? It's what the teens choose to make themselves. I could provide a wonderful nutritious packed lunch for them, but they wouldn't eat it. Once your children get to secondary school age, you don't get to control everything they eat.

Bit There are plenty of better options then cereal with milk, every day!

Toast and jam is crap too.

I Have three in secondary school.
And one adult too.

Yes, you don’t get to control what they eat, so you need to manage the stuff well that you can control!

Well, it's not too hard not to fall for that when you are as nutritionally clued-up as you appear to be, eh.

They have fibre, and I am happy for my kid to eat whole grain and a little added sugar with soy milk for breakfast when that's what he wants. Which isn't every day but if it was, there are much worse things. Shredded wheat has one ingredient.

Anyway, I'm out before I get as over-invested in this convo as you seem to have become 😂

Quincythequince · 28/05/2022 15:09

Well yes Delinathe I work in the area it’s true.

But I see so many of my boys’ friends who now they’re older make bad choices because they weren’t provided with good choices when that was still an option.

Parents forget their impact here.

Child obesity rates skyrocketed during lockdown, way more so than adults!

That’s down to the parents,

Quincythequince · 28/05/2022 15:11

Anyway, I’m off.

Sort your 11 year old DS shirts OP.

Let the older males do theirs, but why him?

GingeryLemons · 28/05/2022 15:13

You forgot to end your post with an exclamation, Quincy!

Standards really are slipping around here. (!)

dustandroses · 28/05/2022 15:14

I thought I was on the wrong thread has it morphed into a breakfast thread?

What is a good breakfast to send them to school on?

Mine vary from bacon sarnies, chocolate spread on toast, peanut butter and jam on toast, banana omelette with honey, porridge, dippy eggs with toast and lurpak, fruit and yogurt or cereal depending on who is making it.

oh dear

autienotnaughty · 28/05/2022 15:14

Dh does his plus 1 kids you do other kids (unless you trust kids with iron then do none!!)

Im surprised that with your passion for nutrition you brag about serving steak and chips.

What do you see as being a problem with steak and chips for two active teenage
boys, as a one off?

Vimto1991 · 28/05/2022 15:25

Mine never got ironed, but we had to wear jumpers over the top to be fair. Even if I didn’t, I don’t remember my shirts being creased, I think the fabric definitley smoothed out in the drying process (via line or radiator).

Kite22 · 28/05/2022 15:30

I don't personally have a problem with it, each to their own. But you seem very passionate about what people eat, so I would have thought you would be concerned that there are no vegetables, the fat content is too high, the fibre content too low, and there are much healthier sources of protein from which to choose.
