On Thursday 2nd for the Horse Guard Parade/hope we get a decent view?!

Or is it a ridiculous idea? Two DC age 7 & 10. Sensible kids.

Why would it be unreasonable or ridiculous?

AliceAbsolum · 27/05/2022 18:49

Go for it!

Toottooot · 27/05/2022 18:55

Jist ging and enjoy.

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:15

Cos it’ll be so busy and packed and we prob won’t see a thing! I just feel like it’s once in a lifetime to take in the atmosphere

Are you going just for the day, how far is the travelling. Its a once in a lifetime opportunity for the kids but it will be heaving with people so you might not see anything.

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:21

Depends we have two lines into London but 1hr 15 on train into Euston

OP posts:
CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:21

Yes just for the day. No Premier Inns available to stay nearby

I've been around Westminster/Parliament this week and it's bloody heaving already. So many tourists. Next week is going to be madness.

Honaloulou · 27/05/2022 19:23

Depends how much you and your kids like waiting around in crowds. I suspect lots of kids you find it boring and uncomfortable. But If you like the sense of occasion and it will feel like and adventure, go for it!

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:23

Silly idea then?? It’s just to see the flyover and experience The Mall atmosphere! I bet people will be camping overnight to see the Horse Guard so we won’t get close (we don’t have tickets and they’re sold out) I think even the edge of St James Park might be impossible

OP posts:
CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:24

I think it’s the sense of adventure. DH is a bit meh about it!

I don't think its likely you'll see the Trooping - Horseguards has stands on three sides for ticketholders and quite limited standing space on the other side.

So it might be worth heading to somewhere where you can see the balcony (which is likely to get busy early with super fans, but nothing ventured....)

Remaining option is lining the Mall

Mindymomo · 27/05/2022 19:27

You don’t need to be as close as you think, as what happens is the horses come in from different directions and it lasts a long time, so people leave when they’ve seen enough, letting others get nearer to the action. Just walking around that area is great as they close the road off and let you wonder around.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/05/2022 19:29

I live in London and it's already really busy. It was quite ridiculous at lunchtime today when I was returning from the gym. It's going to be horrendously busy next week. Most Londoners I know are getting the hell out of town next week for this reason.

But if you really want to come, come early. As in get the first train that morning. Even doing that, you may be too late to see anything. I'd be more worried about how the kids might cope with the crowds, especially if they get separated from you.

It will be on big screens. I wonder if there is anything being ae4t up in Hyde Park.

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:32

The more I’m reading the more it seems watching on screens will be better!

Well Green Park, St James Park and Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens are all Royal parks, so presumably no issues with landowner's consent for big screens!! Hyde Park is obviously the best venue. I haven't spotted that they're doing it for this, but they have for other big royal events.

On a prosaic note, even if they put up portaloos, they'll either not be enough or the queues will be utterly dreadful. So go at the station when you arrive and think about your input/output balance!

BlanketsBanned · 27/05/2022 19:40

There are rooms at kings x travelodge and pi central euston for the Wednesday night

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 19:42

Best to go Weds night and come back Thurs then… hmmm yes input output and hot weather and two small kids…

nearlyspringyay · 27/05/2022 19:44

Don't do it, you'll have a much better time watching on tv.

MakingNBaking · 27/05/2022 19:51

You will never have a better time watching at home on TV. I grew up in London and went to events for the Silver Jubilee, Charles & Di's wedding, the Golden Jubilee, and Wills & Kate's wedding.
I would recommend staying the night before and having a walk around the Mall and St James's Park area the evening before - there is something very special and exciting about the night before an 'occasion'.

BlanketsBanned · 27/05/2022 19:56

Yes I would stay Wednessay night, there will be plenty of stuff going on, the big acreens are in The Mall and St James Park, it starts 10am so get there early and take a picnic, you will see the flypast and the atmosphere will be great,

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 20:27

Due to DH work can’t go the night before!! He’s super busy annoyingly. He’s just not going for it sadly. I would do it.

It’s entirely ticketed and you won’t get anywhere near it.
