To wonder how football fans can afford it?

I am a football fan but no way could I manage to travel abroad for European finals.
100,000 Rangers fans in Seville.
Three trips to Wembley and a final in Paris tomorrow for Liverpool fans.
Jealous!

It’s all about priorities I suppose, and lots of people have enough disposable income to afford it, just as lots do not.

Stroopwaffels · 27/05/2022 19:19

Flights in a very indirect way - Glasgow - Amsterdam - Madrid then bus. 25 guys piled into a 2 room air bnb. Etc.

BattenburgDonkey · 27/05/2022 19:21

People earn different amounts of money and prioritise it differently, it’s not like ‘football fans’ all earn a similar amount.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 27/05/2022 19:25

How do music fans afford to go to gigs? People earn differently, people have different priorities. :)

Blarting · 27/05/2022 19:26

I presume that some football fans are richer than others?

What a really odd question!

How do F1 fans afford to travel for races?

araiwa · 27/05/2022 19:28

Probably not many Liverpool fans went to all three Wembley games and euro final.

RJnomore1 · 27/05/2022 19:28

One of dh friends is a rangers fan and he’s spent £5k on europe this season.

some of the people in my team at work were over £1000 to get to Seville. I think that was relatively reasonable too.

it’s definitely priorities isn’t it. Seville is a one off and I did it in 2003 I guess and would again.

worraliberty · 27/05/2022 19:28

I'm going to guess it's because they have the money Grin

Sarahcoggles · 27/05/2022 19:28

I'm more surprised at how people get time off work at short notice

xalo · 27/05/2022 19:56

It seems totally ridiculous to make two teams from the North travel to London to play each other.

It’s priorities. I refuse to spend on big hen weekends away (UK or abroad) but I spend £1200 on my football season ticket. I can’t think of anything worse than paying £300 for a cottage and a naked butler and other hen party crap but equally some people would consider my season ticket a waste of money.

Sooooo they don't know if it's going to be northern or southern teams in the final, so what are they supposed to do?

Also the national ground is in London and it's iconic going to Wembley.

Depend on the team GrinGrin

My son in law did ....he's a massive fan and drives from South coast couple times a month to Liverpool at least ...plus Wembley etc and few away games !!

Youseethethingis1 · 27/05/2022 20:06

DH went to Seville, booked flights and accommodation before the semi finals before prices shot up, piled in an apartment with 9 other guys, 40 in total hired the coach to Seville from Gibraltar, match ticket complimentary as he has lots of points. So £150 - £200 I think for a 3 day jolly in the sun. Not bad really.
It depends how organised you are and how much luxury you require or don't require.

Lulu1919 · 27/05/2022 20:07

And he's in Paris right now !!!

xalo · 27/05/2022 20:08

@Blarting
So if they don't know whether it's going to be teams from the north or south why not have alternate venues? Or at least have the semifinals at a neutral venue as they used to...

@Youseethethingis1
Lots of my friends (Man City fans) did the same thing and booked for Paris...

Because the fa spent a shit ton on new Wembley and need semi final income to pay it off

balalake · 27/05/2022 20:31

Priorities.

I agree that semi-finals should not be at Wembley, and I would not have play-offs either.

They tried to move the FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Manchester City but the FA wouldn't wear it ( they need the revenue from Wembley). It cost me £100 for the ticket, just over £100 for the night at a Premier Inn, plus the cost of the train ticket.

Because Wembley the national stadium

Blarting · 27/05/2022 20:52

@Lulu1919 bloody good on your SIL, I love passion!

RobertaFirmino · 27/05/2022 20:59

Not everyone in Paris right now actually has a ticket. Many have gone just for the atmosphere. It's relatively cheap to get there by air from either John Lennon or MCR airport (40 mins or so away). Some will have organised coaches too, which won't cost all that much.

I'm totally with you re: venues. It seemed really silly to make LFC and MCFC go all the way to London (and no good for the environment either) on a day when Old Trafford could have been used (big enough, neutral, 20 mins for the Mancs, 40 mins for us).

This is our third CL final under Klopp. When he got us to the first one, I can remember a couple of mates telling their families that this was a 'once in a lifetime' experience so they simply had to go. That line is wearing a bit thin now!

xalo · 27/05/2022 21:12

Yes 'once in a lifetime ' for Liverpool fans doesn't really cut it any more!
