Apparently I'm a wimp for not liking horror.

DH all excited for stranger things today. I watched the first 3 series because he kept going on at me to watch it. Didn't like the gore side of things and closed my eyes but some bits really did make me feel sick/unsettled (the rats in particular and I really don't like the monsters! Oh and particularly bobs death really got me)

Today, I'm feeding baby and dh puts on stranger things and I said I'd rather the baby (5 months) didn't see it. I know it probably won't traumatise her so I took her into another room and we're playing with her toys with baby tv on.

Dh then makes the statement that I'm such a wimp when it comes to scary movies etc.

Simple fact is I don't like them. Never have. Never will. I don't like blood/violence/gore or scary things. I'm not a fan of stranger things - can't help that.

He says He's joking but he does it all the time if something violent/scary comes on.

He's now not watching it but he's clearly annoyed even though I've told him to watch it!!

So my question is:

YABU - stop being a wimp
YANBU - you can't help what you don't like! DH needs to stop with the jibes.

I hate it too. And I am not a wimp. I just don’t see the point.

parietal · 27/05/2022 10:49

I hate horror & crime on TV and won't watch any programs with murders etc.

there is no reason to watch this stuff if you don't like it. YANBU

Lex345 · 27/05/2022 10:50

YANBU. I hate any type of horror and to be honest even things touted as thrillers are too much for me. I can't even watch the trailers or ads sometimes. Its a standing joke in this house I am a complete wimp, but no one tries to force me to watch stuff. I don't particularly find gore scary, but it just isn't nice. I don't watch a lot of TV or films anyway, but I prefer light hearted/comedies if I do.

I put it down to someone showing me IT when I was 8 or 9 and it really scared me. I was terrified of the bath!

EBearhug · 27/05/2022 12:22

I don't mind reading horror, but I wouldn't generally choose to watch it. What I am really not keen on is unnecessary violence and gore. I can deal with it IRL if I have to,but I don't want it as entertainment, especially if it's really over the top and a total bloodfest.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 27/05/2022 12:24

YANBU.
I don’t like horror/anything creepy either.
Your DH should be capable of respecting your preferences.

YANBU. I hate them too. We were asked to watch Candyman for my English Lit class last semester and two of us in the class point blank refused. No one told us we were wimps. It was just accepted without question.

Did the class read the short story the film is based on first? Or is watching random films just what English Lit classes consist of?

Kanaloa · 27/05/2022 13:01

A lot of classes on university English literature courses include film viewings. When I did a certain course at uni we had to watch Pan’s Labyrinth. Obviously that doesn’t mean ‘watching random films’ is what a literature course consists of, but many will include a film viewing that fits the course as well as various novels/short stories/different texts. It’s quite normal and expected.

Part of my English lit gcse was baz luhrmanns version of romeo and Juliet. We must have watched the opening scene 150 times and analysed it to within an inch of its life! I can't watch it now Grin

CatsArePeople · 27/05/2022 14:11

YABU
Stranger Things isn't horror, it's a kids film.

On the other hand I don't like horror genre either. There is very rarely a good, memorable film. The rest are just stupid.

It’s not a film. I agree it isn’t horror but you can’t exactly correct others with incorrect information.

It’s not a horror though. I’m not sure what genre I’d really put it in though. Maybe 80s inspired supernatural/adventure? Something like that. It does have an obvious Stephen King tinge to it in the setting and characterisation but it’s not horror.

I won't watch horror. I'm quite careful about what I let into my mind and know that horror would play on my mind for a long time. Saw enough real stuff in my early life to regard it as entertainment now.

Fairislefandango · 27/05/2022 14:22

I don't like horror. I quite liked Stranger Things though - I wouldn't class it as horror tbh. You are not a wimp for not liking it though. People who like horror aren't necessarily unscareable - it's just that they enjoy being scared and you don't, which is totally fair enough!

same here. My sleeping brain is MUCH more inventive than the horror writers/film makers and it will gaily take up where they left off for innumerable nights in succession. I really admire Stephen King as a writer but I cannot read his books.

Delinathe · 27/05/2022 14:38

Stranger Things is neither for kids nor a film so.... okay.

It may not be a classic horror show but can definitely be said to fall under the horror umbrella...vibes a lot of Stephen King and other 80s horror writers. Horror is a broad church, as people who read it and don't just watch it will know.

I empathise with those who say scary things stick in their minds too much. I am a bit like this but love a lot of horror anyway...like the meal you eat and then regret :-D There are some things I just won't watch though, and I would be deeply unimpressed to have them put on anyway/ be mocked about it. For instance I usually like the supernatural element to be quite strong, if it's too real-world I don't enjoy it.

DH won't watch any horror, pretty much. So I watch it alone and not when he's in the room, either. That's only fair. In fact it's pretty much an on my laptop, headphones in situation to avoid DC seeing but that's fine.

I really like Stranger Things but did find the first season scary! Which was fun for me but why should it be for everyone?

Did the class read the short story the film is based on first? Or is watching random films just what English Lit classes consist of?

Obviously not. That's ignorant.

igivein · 27/05/2022 14:41

I do not consider myself a wimp.
I was a CSI for 17 years. I’ve recovered dismembered / maggot-ridden corpses, tempted away the dogs that were busy eating their deceased owner, been to more post-mortems than I can remember and ‘babysat’ someone who’d just killed their mother during a psychotic episode.
So no, I don’t think I’m a wimp … can’t bear horror though.

Cas112 · 27/05/2022 14:41

Stranger things is not a horror or scary haha

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/05/2022 14:42

Is this not just lighthearted jesting between married folk?! I mean, I like some horror but not all - if my husband called me a wimp in jest I wouldn’t take offence to it. YABU to be treating it like an insult when it’s not IMO.

Sure I wouldn’t like it if a colleague called me a wimp for not liking it but that’s different.

And PS of course YANBU to not like it.

Lanawashington · 27/05/2022 14:46

Oh and particularly bobs death really got me

This thread needs a spoiler alert! Have only just started watching (I know I'm really behind but still)

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 27/05/2022 15:08

I hate horror, too, but like Stranger Things.

I don’t blame you for taking the baby out - I would have done the same, as I only wanted mine to hear ‘nice’ things when tiny, which is why we always spoke kindly to her. I don’t think it’s appropriate for babies to listen to screaming or swearing etc.

Then the issue isn’t whether or not you’re a wimp or not. The issue is that your husband likes to belittle your feelings.

G0forit · 27/05/2022 16:54

Yanbu. It’s down to personal taste. If you’re an adrenaline junkie then you’ll want the scares and gore. During the lockdowns I couldn’t tolerate anything really intense on tv because everything was already intense! If the storyline and character are good I’ll just distract myself on the gory bits. Your dh should stop teasing you and enjoy the horrors on his own.

ConfusedByDesign · 27/05/2022 16:58

I used to love horror. In the good old days when good always wins and evil lost. Now I hate it as there's always a horrible ending when the main characters die and evil wins.
Stranger Things is back to the good old days and I love it.
You have your own preferences and don't need to be belittled for them.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 27/05/2022 17:05

I don't like supernatural stuff, so would never watch stuff like that.

I do like psychological thriller though.

I made the mistake of watching a film called 'Us' and it still give me the creeps when I think about it. One I wished I'd never watched.

I love Stranger Things though. Got snacks and wine ready to watch with dd later.

Everyone likes what they like and they should not get skitted for it.

I feel like people who skit others who don't have the same taste in TV, are akin to music snobs.
