I’ve just had to switch it off. The coverage of the Texan school shooting had a BBC journalist interviewing a ten year old boy asking him (not word for word) ‘you were scared he would come into your classroom and start shooting children?’ This is young kid!! Bad taste bbc bad taste

AFingerofFudge · 26/05/2022 22:17

I just said exactly this and turned it off. Why are they asking kids about it, and why are the kids being allowed to stand in front of cameras with no adults around??

CHiSOCG · 26/05/2022 22:20

It was really gutter journalism. That poor kid.

Very often coverage of awful events is so crass, that you wonder how those reporting them are allowed to get away with being so prurient, and exploitative of vulnerable victims.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/05/2022 22:26

Awful. And the poor child was smiling away. Must be so traumatised.

Should have stuck to why the police let the guy in then took 55 minutes to follow him.

I said this to my husband the child is smiling because he’s traumatised.

I’m furious

Thank you for posting. I can't believe the BBC was insensitive enough to consider this appropriate for broadcast and am going to complain to them when I've finished here. Dreadful, they wouldn't be permitted to interview the child in this country let alone broadcast it. 10 years old! So shocking.

Fizbosshoes · 26/05/2022 22:38

I thought this was also v insensitive, I can not imagine how terrified the poor children not only in the class but those in neighbouring classrooms

CHiSOCG · 26/05/2022 22:39

I too am going to complain. I’m horrified.

Exploitative!

I was just saying the same. Terrible journalism. That poor child. Very inappropriate of the BBC.

Blarting · 26/05/2022 22:41

I missed the need tonight, I'm not disappointed.

RIP the Texan victims Flowers

CriticalCondition · 26/05/2022 22:48

We turned to eachother and said exactly this. Prurient, crass and exploitative. That poor child. What on earth was a, the journalist thinking and b, the BBC doing in broadcasting it? I'm so appalIed I'm complaining to the BBC. The same journalist did a shockingly intrusive interview with a parent on yesterday's news who was going to have to tell his child some of their friends had died.
Inexcusable and they should be called to account.

Cookerhood · 26/05/2022 22:50

Ah, it wasn't just me. Awful, awful piece. I hope they get thousands of complaints.

No I was so angry switched it off immediately and called my husband over. Said I can’t believe what I’ve just seen from the BBC. I’m hoping they get 1000s of complaints too.

I found it unpleasant to watch this morning. I think he had a parent with him.

Cookerhood · 26/05/2022 22:57

I have put in my complaint.

CHiSOCG · 26/05/2022 22:58

Parent or not it’s not what we need to see.

I saw a clip of Anderson Cooper interviewing a man who had just learnt he'd lost his daughter. He kept the microphone poised and the cameras rolling. Disgraceful.

newnamethanks · 26/05/2022 23:01

Worthy of Fox News and their gutter standards, that interview of a 10 year old child could not take place and be broadcast here, it would contravene all kinds of guidelines. Pure exploitation. I hope a grabby US lawyer picks it up and sues BBC. I'm furious. Please make a formal complaint.

Are you based in the US? It’s disgraceful. I’ve complained.

I've complained and requested a response.

newnamethanks · 26/05/2022 23:20

No @CHiSOCG , I'm in UK and am usually a supporter of BBC. To see their reporters trailing the gutter to compete with US coverage is shocking. Different broadcasting standards there doesn't mean they no longer have to apply them here. Sorry, I'm very cross indeed. If I receive a response other than an acknowledgement, I'll post it here.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/05/2022 23:21

I also switched it off. That smile....that appeasing smile...that don't hurt me smile. Poor traumatised child should never have been let within a mile of a journalist.

L1ttledrummergirl · 27/05/2022 00:41

I thought it, dd said it.
Why could a child see that it was wrong but the adults broadcasting it couldn't?

WillowintheUK · 27/05/2022 00:53

I’ve sent in a complaint too.
