I’ve just had to switch it off. The coverage of the Texan school shooting had a BBC journalist interviewing a ten year old boy asking him (not word for word) ‘you were scared he would come into your classroom and start shooting children?’ This is young kid!! Bad taste bbc bad taste

The BBC have been insensitive for years. One of my classmates died as a teen and we were harassed in the street as we were grieving. The story they concocted about the death was even worse.

It seems like they aspire to be like Fox News or similar US channels.

They should really be ashamed.

LisaSimpson1984 · 27/05/2022 01:25

I cannot breathe when I read this story.

what world have I brought my girls into?

dalmatianmad · 27/05/2022 01:52

I've also followed that link and complained.

CHiSOCG · 27/05/2022 06:50

I hope we all get responses to our complaint and that their is a formal apology. I’m not sure there will be. Totally put me off BBC News.

I'm not disagreeing but...

What is the general consensus on teaching young children
"Locks, lights, out of sight"
lockdown drill for active shooters?

Traumatising? Or would it be teaching skills that could keep them alive in the unfortunate gun prevalent environment in which they live?

FatOaf · 27/05/2022 07:47

Television news is almost entirely voyeurism. Has been for many, many years. I stopped watching it about 20 years ago (apart from a very few major political stories) and it doesn't sound like it's got any better in the meantime.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 27/05/2022 15:04

I read an interview with Patrick Kielty yesterday. They moved their children back to the UK as they couldn’t bear the thought of 3 and 4 year olds practicing lockdown drills.

I've had a 'holding' reply to my complaint. Summarised, 'we're really busy and will get back to you'. They will.

WillowintheUK · 04/06/2022 10:55

I got the same this morning, apologising for not getting back in two weeks.

Cookerhood · 04/06/2022 15:03

Yup, me too.

Had a reply from BBC:

We’re sorry to hear that you were unhappy we interviewed a Robb Elementary School pupil as part of our report on the mass shooting at the school.

We raised your concerns with the programme’s senior editors.
We take our duty of care very seriously. The welfare of our contributors is always central to how we prepare for and conduct our interviews. As our Editorial Guidelines indicate, children and their welfare take priority over any editorial requirement
(www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidelines/children-young-people).

In this instance our North America editor, Sarah Smith, met Jayden with his mum in Uvalde’s central square when he was being interviewed by another journalist. Consent to speak to Jayden was given by his mum, and then off camera from Jayden himself. His mum was present for the whole of the interview and Jayden went on talk to various other members of the US media after we’d spoken to him.
We believe it was important to hear Jayden’s story of being in a nearby classroom during the mass shooting on 24 May. His welfare was our priority at all times.

We value your feedback about the interview, which as we’ve already said has been raised with senior BBC News at Ten editors. We’ve also included your points in our overnight report. These reports are among the most widely read sources of feedback at the BBC, and helps inform future editorial judgements.

My response would be, just because other people do crass things, doesn’t mean you have to.

newnamethanks · 08/06/2022 07:32

Me too, standard reply. Disgusting attitude. It's not the fault of a minor that their traumatised parent was preyed on, in a vulnerable state, by an opportunistic journalist who can then claim they permitted this. That's why there's legislation to protect them. I'm still furious and will progress this to Ofcom as I believe it's breached Standards.

CHiSOCG · 08/06/2022 07:38

We’ve all got the same response then?

OP posts:
Cookerhood · 08/06/2022 07:41

Yes, we did (of course!)

CHiSOCG · 08/06/2022 11:26

Form to escalate to OfCom

Same reply here. I am not surprised but still angry. Will escalate to OfCom too.
