Drag Queen toys from Fisher Price? AIBU

I've just come across these on twitter, recommended for ages 1+
The Little People sets I used to buy for my toddlers now come with a Rupaul Drag Race set.

tinybeans.com/rupaul-drag-race-fisher-price-toy-set/

AIBU to say that toys that are drag queens are unsuitable as a toy for toddlers?

Isn't that show a bit old hat now? To be honest I think most kids would see it and think they were just glamourous women, can't get worked up over it, if parents want to expose their kids to drag queens that there choice, I have no objection to my child seeing them but won't be buying these as don't see they will add to her play or understanding of the world.

FlorenceinSummer · 25/05/2022 14:55

TBF this looks just like any other toy, without the label (that the kids can't read at 1+) it is just a toy...perhaps Dad is a drag queen and helps explain it to their kids, other kids might just like the way it looks...don't like it? don't buy it. Easy.

orwellwasright · 25/05/2022 14:56

In case they grow up knowing that some men dress as women as performance? THE HORROR OF IT. WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN

Hadjab · 25/05/2022 14:57

A. They just look like glamorous women
B. They are collector's items, much like you can get collectable Barbies and Lego
C. How does your toddler know they are Drag Queens, how do they make the link unless you explain it to them?

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/05/2022 14:57

I think they're cute.

Now Bratz dolls <shudder>

SleepingStandingUp · 25/05/2022 14:57

I would imagine any parent who is going to sit and explain that this is a man dressed up as a woman to a toddler is going to expose them to that with or without the toy. It looks like a glamorous lady, a Queen or a mermaid. If parents feel cooler for having brought it I don't think it's the toy that's a issue

Fair point

I don't see the issue here.

TheKeatingFive · 25/05/2022 15:02

I couldn't get worked up about those, no toddler would get the context unless it was explained to them (and even then, it'd be a struggle)

Rory1234 · 25/05/2022 15:03

My children saw a Drag Race ad on Netflix when they were 5 and 3 and asked what it was. I gave them a basic explanation and they just listened and carried on with what they were doing.

They’ll only consider various life choices a big deal if you make it a big deal.

For a toddler, they’re just characters on a TV show. No different to explaining Mrs Tumble is Justin Fletcher.

'Expose them'?? FFS. It's a fella in a frock not hardcore porn.

Wtf is wrong with drag? It's been part of performance/theatre culture for decades, probably centuries.

Lol at all the parents trying to pretend the panto dame is a woman so that their precious fucking kid doesn't get gender-confused or turn trans or something.

Topgub · 25/05/2022 15:09

I think drag is rooted in sexism and mysoginy but can't get worked up over these dolls

Certainly no worse than LOL or Bratz or even Barbie

Don't hate on Barbie. She's grown and evolved over the years. I was pleasantly surprised by the series.

That and My Little Pony. Feminist icons!

Agreed and I wouldn't buy those dolls either, for that reason.

Still looks like a man with no hair and 2 women

Blossomtoes · 25/05/2022 15:14

You can just not buy things you don’t like or that offend you. 🤷‍♀️

Crinkle77 · 25/05/2022 15:16

Nobody is making you buy them.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/05/2022 15:16

They just look like princesses.

(At the ages of 4&6, my DDs came to the conclusion that I was actually a Princess because I sometimes needed to go to parties in long evening dresses... their perception of life can be very different.

Plus many toddler boys like wearing the fancy dresses in dress up boxes etc... as they are sparkly and glittery. )

10HailMarys · 25/05/2022 15:18

You may have noticed on the web page that they're advertising Beatles, The Office and Golden Girls sets.

Most of these sets (not just the Drag Race one, but the other tie-in sets as well) will be bought as a collectible item for adults, not for kids, and where they are bought for kids, the kids will have no idea what they are. They will see a bald man and two glamorous ladies, not a drag show. If someone buys them The Golden Girls set, children will just see three grandmas. They won't know that they're three grandmas who joke about sex and dating all the time. The Beatles set to a toddler is bunch of men in a band. And so on.

Even if it were obvious to children that the figures are men dressed as women, I don't really see why that's a problem. Has nobody ever taken their kids to a pantomime?! Were any of us scarred for life as kids by seeing The Two Ronnies dressed as women in about one-third of all their sketches? When I was little you could barely turn on the telly without seeing Danny La Rue in a blue rinse wig singing Hello Dolly. It really isn't a problem.

LaBellina · 25/05/2022 15:20

I think drag isn’t something for children but the dolls seem harmless.

I wouldn’t buy it though because I don’t want to contribute to this trend.

Hobbesmanc · 25/05/2022 15:23

They also do sets of The Beetles, The Golden Girls and The American office (a very adult show) Clearly collectibles and not pushing a woke trans agenda as the dog whistling OP seems to infer.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 25/05/2022 15:25

The person who posted about ‘all the hate’ ought to read this thread.

OneTC · 25/05/2022 15:27

Clearly mostly directed at adult customers, as they keep sliding to in the blurb.

jamoncrumpets · 25/05/2022 15:28

The target audience is adults, which is the same with their other sets. Unless there are thousands of toddler Dwight Schrute fans knocking about that I don't know of... tinybeans.com/the-office-little-people-dunder-miflin/
