To not understand 'dark mode'

PlatinumJubileeBubilee · 24/05/2022 15:49

Honestly, a bit of a pointless post because it all comes down to personal preference I supposed. But I don't understand the appeal of 'dark mode' on peoples mobiles and computers. I work with quite a few people who use dark mode and I find it so hard to view and look at. And yes, before anyone asks why I care about their settings - it's because I work in an environment where I often have to look at the other persons device to see something or approve something. I find it very difficult to see all of the white text on dark black backgrounds, and feel like the black darkens everything and throws the colours off.

Aside from aesthetics is there an actual reason why someone would chose dark mode?

Totally with you. I think they are the mark of a psychopath.

TheTonEffect · 24/05/2022 15:53

Because light/white mode is too bright and gives me a headache, especially at 4am on a night shift.

CornishPorsche · 24/05/2022 15:53

I have chronic migraine. An attack can leave me sick for days. Dark modes are much more restful and enable me to work or use social media on bad days.

No psychopathy.

Thelonewanderer · 24/05/2022 15:54

I find dark mode to be better on my eyes

forrestgreen · 24/05/2022 15:55

I find that when I look away I can see an imprint of the text. Brings on a migraine for me

JenniferBarkley · 24/05/2022 15:55

I like it on my phone so that if I'm up with a teething toddler I can scroll without it lighting up the room. I don't like it on my computer for work stuff but it doesn't bother me either way.

Onlywomengivebirth · 24/05/2022 15:55

They’re ganging up on us. Run!

NutellaEllaElla · 24/05/2022 15:55

Easy, the vast expanse of glaring bright white hurts my eyes. Black feels better.

PlatinumJubileeBubilee · 24/05/2022 15:56

Ok, I can kind of understand that on the night shift and for migraines it might be helpful. Although I regularly get migraines and generally need to just be off my phone all together, or if I must be on it I just turn the brightness way down which is what I do at night when I often use my phone in a dark room while my husband sleeps and I can't.

But during the day? All day everyday? Just for work and pleasure? Still don't get it, unless the brightness hurts peoples eyes somehow. But I've always found it the opposite way. Dark mode hurts my eyes and really strains them

I prefer it; although I typically have my phone set to choose automatically based on the light.

It looks nicer, it’s less abrasive on your eyes; and it’s soothing if I’ve got a headache. I’m all for anything that makes looking at a screen more comfortable; especially when we’re all on them so much.

TimmyHos · 24/05/2022 15:59

I use dark modes at night, when a white screen even a very low brightness is still too much.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 24/05/2022 15:59

Dark mode makes my eyes go funny. The lines jump about and I get after image. It also hurts my head. Us humans are all a bit weirdWink

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 24/05/2022 15:59

I'm a migraine sufferer but find the dark mode really hard to use. I've found that although it doesn't give me a migraine it gives me a really bad headache especially around my eyes. Mine comes on automatically but I knock it back to normal screen when it does. Same with reading iBooks the only screen I can tolerates sepia

CornishPorsche · 24/05/2022 16:00

Why is the attached screenshot more painful to look at than the white version?

I have no option but to work through my attacks - I can be sick up to 27 days a month at my worst and would be sacked if I didn't at least try to work through things. Dark mode makes things less aggressive to look at. Some people, including me, will use it preventatively.

@Onlywomengivebirth I have a new colleague that I am very unsure about that uses dark mode. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a (seemingly mild mannered) psychopath!

CherieBabySpliffUp · 24/05/2022 16:01

I find it easier on the eyes. Would happily scroll MN if they gave us the optionSmile

BettyForgety · 24/05/2022 16:02

I’m dyslexic and find black writing on a white background hard to read. I can read much better in dark mode

Snap. This is me exactly. Dh is a dark mode user, swears it's easier on the eyes, it obviously depends on the eyes.

Imaginary · 24/05/2022 16:03

YABU
Dark mode is much easier on the eyes.

chickyellowcute · 24/05/2022 16:03

I also use dark mode due to migraines, issues with too much blue light/light in general and I find it easier on my eyes.

No one has to be the same though, glad many sites have both options for whatever suits best

DressingPafe · 24/05/2022 16:06

Everything I use is set up on dark mode, laptop, kindle etc. I can’t handle glaring white in any form. But I am very light sensitive. I could never live in a house with floor to ceiling windows (well I’d need to cover them). I find white walls depressing etc. “light and bright” is essentially the opposite of what I like! I just find it weirdly draining and depressing, no idea why.

SirenSays · 24/05/2022 16:07

I prefer it. I think it looks better and stops nosy sods looking at my phone.

SignOnTheWindow · 24/05/2022 16:08

I know a few partially sighted or dyslexic people who use it.

Ednafrommooneyponds · 24/05/2022 16:10

I find dark mode a lot easier to read. Personally I can't understand why anyone would use light mode. News flash...people are different.

Cheerybigbottom · 24/05/2022 16:11

My husband has Irlen's syndrome and finds he reads better on a dull coloured background. He has dark mode or dimmed view on everything.
