To not understand 'dark mode'

PlatinumJubileeBubilee · 24/05/2022 15:49

Honestly, a bit of a pointless post because it all comes down to personal preference I supposed. But I don't understand the appeal of 'dark mode' on peoples mobiles and computers. I work with quite a few people who use dark mode and I find it so hard to view and look at. And yes, before anyone asks why I care about their settings - it's because I work in an environment where I often have to look at the other persons device to see something or approve something. I find it very difficult to see all of the white text on dark black backgrounds, and feel like the black darkens everything and throws the colours off.

Aside from aesthetics is there an actual reason why someone would chose dark mode?

I have an old phone and the dark mode makes the battery last longer.

Sparro · 24/05/2022 21:11

It's easier on the eyes when staring at text on a screen for hours on end, and it makes the syntax highlighting show up better.

Totally with you. I think they are the mark of a psychopath.

😂

fibeee · 24/05/2022 21:13

I personally find dark mode much easier on the eyes. My work involves looking at a computer screen all day long and I couldn’t be without it.

PurassicJark · 24/05/2022 21:15

It's better for my eyes. They have become very sensitive to light over the years, the lights in offices probably being a factor. I get frequent migraines without it.

How do you get dark mode on iPad ?

Settings- Display and Brightness- Appearance
You can choose to have light or dark mode all the time, or set it to automatic and choose the time you want it to switch.

I have stupid eyes that freak out at bright lights. I prefer a dimmed screen. But I find dark mode too dark and the contrast with writing too much, then I panic and try to get the right one back but can't remember how I did it.

And it upsets me.

AnImaginaryCat · 24/05/2022 21:26

I prefer it.

Can you make MN dark mode? Or Chrome? That's the dream.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 24/05/2022 21:26

Astigmatism. Although i found my new laptop is less bright than my previous one, so i don't need it on my laptop anymore, just phone.

Peonyperfect · 24/05/2022 21:39

Mine goes on to dark mode automatically when the battery is low, it saves battery life. I don't like it though so I plug my phone in and switch back.

Not MN but I have Chrome on dark mode.

godmum56 · 24/05/2022 21:45

personal choice but dark mode makes my eyes go funny

Jalepenojello · 24/05/2022 21:46

uhhh as you say, it comes down to personal preference…you find it hard to use but others find the default blinding or too bright… you really need to ask?

MattoMatto · 24/05/2022 21:52

All things being equal, I wouldn’t choose dark mode. Unfortunately, I have awful floaters in one eye which drive me crazy. This is one thing at least I can do to avoid seeing them.

TeaAndChoccie · 24/05/2022 21:54

Oh gosh I'm with you. My DH uses dark mode. He's also.always 'incogntio' mode, he won't use WhatsApp anymore due to some crazy ideas about his personal info, and hes just always got to do what no-one else does when it comes to tech (everyone uses Gmail - I have to be different and do some obscure thing, everyone uses WhatsApp - so I'm going to be different and use some random other app, everyone uses normal mode so I'll use dark mode).

Drives. Me. Knuts !! (irrationally of course!! He is perfect in most other ways and I do love him dearly!)

bloodyunicorns · 24/05/2022 22:17

My phone put itself on dark mode and I can't see how to get it off it...

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/05/2022 22:23

I have Glaucoma and Cataracts, and the contrast is easier on my eyes

Threetulips · 24/05/2022 23:22

Whilst I don’t my dyslexic son does the same for the same reasons.

Nice that people assume having a disability means there’s something unhinged about them.

daisyjgrey · 24/05/2022 23:30

Oh god do you put the big light on as well?

TrickorTreacle · 25/05/2022 00:10

YABU OP, especially in implying that dark mode is a new thing.

On desktop PCs and laptops, there is a colour setting called "high contrast" that has been around for 20+ years and I have used it for all of that time. White (or yellow, or whatever colour you want) against a black background and it is OS-wide.

Also, if you're old enough like me to have used computers in the 1980s, then the colours were always that way round.

I use MN in dark mode using a Brave browser in night mode which overwrites all websites.

MoiraQueen · 25/05/2022 05:20

I prefer dark (like my soul according to this thread!) mode.
As a pp mentioned this is the way it used to be if you grew up using computers in the 80s.
It looks better, especially for looking at and editing photography. There's less glare, so it's gentler on my eyes, although sometimes I use the eyesheild setting, which reduces blue light if I'm on light mode
If I'm surfing in bed at night, then dark mode stops the screen glare waking DH.

Mumsnet is funny sometimes, the amount of times I'm surprised to find people offended by other people's choices, things that I had never known could be offensive 😂
