Monkeypox AIBU?

I don’t really follow the news, hence this thread.

AIBU to worry about this in terms of spreading through the UK?

Following the news is a good way to stay up to date.

runnerblade95 · 24/05/2022 14:09

@AnneLovesGilbert I agree but it’s all so depressing. Can’t be arsed. But if you don’t have the answer, no worries. Thank you for your answer nevertheless.

Best way to have an idea about it is to read/listen to reliable news sources.

Doing show would very much suggest that given it is only spread by very close contact and is rarely super serious it’s not something we need to be overly worried about. There is also a vaccine already available if it does become needed.

TaranThePigKeeper · 24/05/2022 14:12

YABU to start yet another thread on this. There’s already enough misinformation flying about. Go to the BBC News website and read just this one story if you don’t want to look at the rest of the news, and follow any links there. There will also be reliable information on the NHS website. Asking about anything medical here will get you a load of wrong answers and idle speculation from non-epidemiologists.

I agree. But simply put, I don’t generally follow the news. Thank you for your detailed answer. Which has answered my question in its entirety :)

@TaranThePigKeeper I don’t recall another thread I created regarding this? If so, kindly link me to it. Otherwise, thank you your equally detailed response :)

I don't think so. I work in a high risk area for this infection and the advice from our higher up is there needs to be contact with fluid from the blisters or prolonged face to face contact with a symptomatic person.
Its not like covid in that it has visible and obvious symptoms allowing people to avoid a good percentage of higher risk contact fairly easily.
There's treatment and a vaccine and we have stocks of both.
I'll not lie to you, I was absolutely crapping myself over the weekend and some of my colleagues are self isolating but I'm a lot more reasurred after our last 2 or 3 briefings.

TomAllenWife · 24/05/2022 14:16

I couldn't give two hoots

I have no control over it, it's not serious
We don't get this crazy over chicken pox

I didn’t say that you had created earlier threads. There are others here already, though. Do you also restrict your consumption of information from this forum to replies which come directly to your inbox, in the same way that you restrict your consumption of news and current affairs? It’s usual to check to see whether or not a discussion you want to join has already begun elsewhere on the boards, rather than expecting everyone to duplicate their efforts in replying on more than one thread about the same matter.

Justcallmebebes · 24/05/2022 14:30

Why do some people never read the news? I find that so bizarre. Almost anything can be happening and you wouldn't know.

Re: Monkey pox. No. No not in the slightest bit worried or even mildly concerned

Icelandicsox · 24/05/2022 14:33

No problem, OP. I think we're all a bit jumpy after the last 2 years.
I remember thinking way back at the start of covid that we'd be on top of this a lot quicker if there was some kind of way you could see that people had it. With this one we do.

What I'm hearing is that the virus hasn't changed its just got lucky with a set of circumstances that's allowed it to spread further than normal. There will have been a party or festival or similar that's brought folk together (like together together) and then they've all gone their seperate ways and Monkeypox has gone with them.
There are similar outbreaks of STIs all the time and we manage them and they go away.

justasking111 · 24/05/2022 14:36

Well I'm not in close physical contact with anyone so I'm not concerned

runnerblade95 · 24/05/2022 14:43

No, I don’t. Because I simply have no interest in standard news. MN is more convenient for me. I hope this won’t pose as an issue for you going forwards.

Not in the slightest, I assure you. But I repeat my caveat about not relying on uninformed and often wildly inaccurate information garnered from this forum, when there are actual sources of factual information available.

If it's mainly being spread by close sexual contact as keeps being branded how much shagging are these people doing cos it's spreading pretty rapidly IMO.

Shit I was talking to colleagues about this at work today … maybe we should’ve all something so serious research instead of nattering and making up wild facts?

AnIckabog · 24/05/2022 17:41

I wouldn't trust mumsnet for your news tbh. There is so much misinformation on one of the other threads.

In answer to your question
Worrying things about monkeypox: It IS serious (lots of people saying it is mild, but when WHO say that they mean compared to ebola and smallpox, they don't mean what people think they mean). Even with the mildest strain the death rate is 1 in 100, about the same as measles and vastly worse than covid. It affects children and pregnant women worst. It appears to have gained transmissability. It is NOT an STD (again, lots of misinformation). We don't have validated treatments against it, although antivirals might work.

Reasons not to panic: Even if it has become more transmissable, it is still much less contagious than covid and requires droplet contact. It should be possible to contain with sensible precautions. There is a vaccine against it which close contacts are getting to prevent the spread.

If we had a big epidemic, it would be really bad - it is more serious than covid as a disease. But that is unlikely because we should be able to contain it.

nannynick · 24/05/2022 18:14

If it spreads to children it could be a big concern. An infected person could be treated by a healthcare worker, who becomes infected and their child/children become infected and spread it in nursery.

whenwillthemadnessend · 24/05/2022 17:36

It initially started off in a group of men who have sex with men ,predominantly, but it's close contact so close bodily contact standing very close to someone can transmit it with coughs and sneezes
So there may well be some community spread
I'm following the news it's far more reliable then social media I'm not concerned as such but I'm following the updates

Do you think it's a good idea to come to a forum, where it would appear a high level of posters have health anxiety and expect a measured response?

Start watching the news or conducting your own research, it'll give you the answers and ability to make informed thoughts.

If you can't be arsed to watch the news, not sure why you think others should do it for you?
