Monkeypox AIBU?

runnerblade95 · 24/05/2022 14:07

I don’t really follow the news, hence this thread.

AIBU to worry about this in terms of spreading through the UK?

If it spreads to children it could be a big concern. An infected person could be treated by a healthcare worker, who becomes infected and their child/children become infected and spread it in nursery.

@runnerblade95 I rest my case! So what's your opinion now?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 24/05/2022 18:57

I think YABU to star another thread, rather than joining in the one that's already running (as all this will achieve is to split the replies and lead to a lot of duplication.

The disease is mild. I thought that, post-covid, people had realised that 'mid' in this context has a specific sense. It is not a synonym for 'trivial'. Is simply means 'does not require hospital admission'. You could, as with covid, be very ill at home for some time and still be counted as 'mild'

It looks as though the fatality rate is low (monkey pox in a naive population is on a par with current version covid in a vaccinated population) and that any sequalae (eg scarring) will not be as burdensome on NHS as long covid is.

The sexual contact aspect a bit of a red herring - it's spread mainly by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, and sex is simply one popular way for that to occur.

nannynick · 24/05/2022 19:50

Would love to hear from a virologist who could confirm that there is no chance of spread between an adult and a child in the same household. I cannot imagine any mumsnetter who is a virologist would say that there is 0% chance of that.

If this did spread to a child, then could that child spread it to others, as young children do have very close contact with other children?

As a childcare worker, in my view it could be a concern but is not at the moment.

Threetulips · 24/05/2022 20:08

It concerns me more that they haven’t pin pointed a region of infection -

Why not?

AlternativePerspective · 24/05/2022 20:13

ffs haven’t we had enough scaremongering threads on this? I’ve already hidden 3 of them.

And for the people panicking about this let’s put this into perspective shall we? There have been 131 cases. In 15 countries. So it’s hardly a rapid spread or something which is going to start seriously affecting children.

Even in Africa where the virus always exists, there has only been 1700 cases over the last 6 months.

So we’re talking about 1300 cases over all, out of a world population of 9 billion people.

It’s time people got a fucking grip or do you not have anything to panick about now that COVID isn’t as much of a concern?

How the fuck do you people ever leave the hous?

VladmirsPoutine · 24/05/2022 20:14

I'm keeping up to date reading the news about it. Again, I always wonder how people consciously make an effort to avoid the news. Like it's a good thing to be entirely ignorant of world events happening in this very moment.

I do wonder if much like covid we'll be again chasing our tails manically r.e. monkeypox because we were far too relaxed about it.

AlternativePerspective · 24/05/2022 20:22

I do wonder if much like covid we'll be again chasing our tails manically r.e. monkeypox because we were far too relaxed about it.

Why would it?

Monkeypox has always existed. it’s just that it hasn’t been seen in Europe before. But fwiw the first case in the UK came over with someone from Nigeria.

But there have always been cases in Africa, and even in Africa where health and living conditions are far worse than here, and where people live in close proximity to one another there has never been an outbreak on a large scale.

Also the death rate will have been calculated based on African conditions where health and sanitary and living conditions are nowhere near on a par with Europe.

Also, Monkeypox is a known virus. There’s a vaccine and there’s treatment. As opposed to COVID where nobody had ever had it, there was no immunity, no vaccine, and treatment had to evolve as more people caught the virus.

Blarting · 24/05/2022 18:54

Do you think it's a good idea to come to a forum, where it would appear a high level of posters have health anxiety and expect a measured response?

Start watching the news or conducting your own research, it'll give you the answers and ability to make informed thoughts.

If you can't be arsed to watch the news, not sure why you think others should do it for you?

Well, you’re here, aren’t you?

And I suppose that if you have nothing to add, then your presence here on this thread is pointless?

Either way, thank you for the recommendation, but I will not start watching the news and will continue obtaining my information from other sources.

Such as Mumsnet.

Have a good evening.

I have no opinion as of yet.

I am reading through the replies and formulating my own opinion.

I had no idea that there was a deadline in regards to the aforementioned formulation and conclusion of my opinion.

Thank you for letting me know :)

Please could you link me to the thread you are referencing? A thread that I apparently started prior to this one? Thank you :)

Yes. I’m glad that you find that amusing and I hope it has made your night 😅

I will look into the issue further if the information I have been provided thus far on Mumsnet is not informative enough.

You seem somewhat irked by my posting on Mumsnet to obtain general information regarding Monkeypox.

That sounds like a You Problem.

Have a lovely evening.

Goodnight.

@runnerblade95 I think you're trying ton"dismiss" me off the thread is very telling.

This is an open forum, you may have started the thread, but you don't have the ability to police it and dismiss me,

So back to monkey pox, what have you found useful on this thread, that wasn't on the other threads about monkey pox?

TempNameChangexx · 24/05/2022 22:38

runnerblade95 · 24/05/2022 14:09

@AnneLovesGilbert I agree but it’s all so depressing. Can’t be arsed. But if you don’t have the answer, no worries. Thank you for your answer nevertheless.

Have you heard of Google?

runnerblade95 · 24/05/2022 22:43

@Blarting Ah bless you. Nobody was trying to dismiss you. I just have minimal patience for individuals who enjoy the pointless to-and-fro, sarky comments and so on.

I am grown. Not sure how old you are but allow me to make this abundantly clear to you before I sign off for the night:

I will not be disclosing what I’ve learnt from this thread as that is not for you to know. The mere fact that you are so intrigued to know what I have discovered, is worrying in itself.

Please do yourself (and myself) a favour, and leave it at that as this conversation appears to have officially died.

Going to sleep now. Goodnight @Blarting 💐

I read the news but Mumsnet is different. Much more ruthless, and in amongst the pettiness and bunfights, there are actual real stories from on the ground. Plus there's bias and censorship in our news, and creepy algorithms that try to tell us how to think by monitoring our clicks and visits. So I do cross check with the vipers on Mumsnet. They really do filter out the nonsense.

Blarting · 24/05/2022 22:56

@runnerblade95 I'm a fully grown up and allowed to dictate my very own bed time.

Are you always so condescending?

Anyway as you've said you're off to bench now, so goodnight.

Maybe get up in time to watch the depressing news tomorrow, rather than get your opinions from MN.

Sweet dreams.

jadey1991 · 24/05/2022 22:56

Hi op,
So far I heard that this could become a epidemic. Whether this true or not I don't know.. my thing is why have they allowed this to spread so quickly. Like one of the mumnetters said I don't understand why it's being blown out of proportion, chicken pox was never treated the way monkey pox has. Now apparently they have a vaccine for monkey pox. This world has gone crazy

Yeah but OP is using MN because she can't be arsed watching the news as it's to depressing.

Very different.

declutteringmymind · 24/05/2022 23:06

@Blarting true.

It's far easier to read the news online than asking for a bulletin on here. And if you can't be arsed to do that then you can switch on the tv or even the radio and they will read it out to you.
