AIBU to not want fizzy drinks at my kids party

So to be clear I'd bought the diet, caffeine free varieties, plus other homemade fizzy stuff just so they're not missing out (yes I know about the sweetners but it's a one-off). So when a parent turns up with 40 cans of sugar loaded drinks and they all run to grab them before I've even noticed or had a chance to offer anything else... its very annoying! Cue spirited, cheeky kids turning into little vandals - tantrums and tummyaches galore... not an exaggeration.

Why did a parent bring 40 cans to your party? This is odd and annoying whatever your views on fizzy drinks.

^My first thoughts too

well, it would depend. did you mention beforehand you didn't want anyone to bring any fizzy pop? if so, then YANBU as they went against your wishes, but if you didn't, YABU and have to let it go, as they didn't know, even if it's annoying! x

I just said please don't bring anything, so I am sure they meant to be generous.

Why did a parent turn up to your kids party with 40 cans of fizzy drink? At all the parties I've been too the kid gets dropped off and the parent runs off for their two hours of freedom! Never seen a parent drop off anything except the gift..

Most people know not to bring anything, though, don't they? Confused
I've never been to a kid's party that wasn't fully catered by the host.

I’ll never forget when my son was 7 and had a birthday party at soft play. They asked him what he wanted to drink and he made very sure they had blackcurrant and was thrilled until everyone else started saying Fanta or coke. He looked at me as if to say ‘that was an option?’ We changed his order and he was thrilled. My bil was in shock that they allowed it for 7 yos but when we were kids I think we were about 7 when we started having them at parties and mil reminded him he did too! I think yanbu to be annoyed they brought them but slightly unreasonable to have not had the original version yourself

Problemmo · 23/05/2022 12:42

Depends on their age really. If they’re under 12 I’d say it’s unreasonable and tbh a bit of a weird thing to do, I don’t know anyone who would turn up to a kids party with a case of Coca Cola… Over 12 and it’s a bit less odd.

easyday · 23/05/2022 12:42

Wow I've never had a parent turn up with food or drink at any party for my kids. How odd that they didn't clear it with you first.

It's a bit like saying you provided Vapes for the kids but a parent turned up with nicotine patches.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Johnnysgirl · 23/05/2022 11:26

Did you ask the invitees to bring a dish, rather than cater the party yourself, op?
It's the only possible explanation for someone to think they needed to cater the drinks side of things Confused
Bizarre of you if you did.
Bizarre of her if you didn't.

No

Unless there was a hefty slug of whiskey in there and the coke/Fanta was just a mixer, that's a very odd reaction?
Of course soft drinks are allowed to be sold for 7 year old's.
It's not compulsory to buy them, that's up to the parent's discretion.

Oops I seem to be in the wrong here so it's been an eye opener!! I bought one diet caffeine free bottle so they would at least have a few sips, plus fizzy water I mix with squash. The kids are 10. Btw it wasn't a birthday party - it was just a random excuse for a party. I didn't know the sugar rush thing had been disproven.

I want to know more about the home made fizzy stuff.

The elderflower are only just getting going round here.

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/05/2022 12:58

Oh right, not actual home made. Sorry thanks for explaining

eurochick · 23/05/2022 13:00

I'd much prefer my kid to have an occasional full sugar soft drink than some sweetener-laden muck. But then sweeteners taste awful to me and give me a headache so I avoid them anyway.

Vikinga · 23/05/2022 13:02

I've never seen the sugar rush you describe and I've hosted and been to loads of birthday parties.

Lol. Google it…. Sugar rushes are a complete myth. 😂👍🏼 So “no exaggeration” is in fact a complete fabrication.

At 10 I'd be inclined to let it go. If it was quite a casual party arrangement then I'm sure they thought it was helpful. Unless it was for 10 kids and they then necked four cans each but then I'd have been putting the extras "away for later". How many kids?

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2022 13:07

And alas, I suspect a few sips each of diet, caffeine free coke so they could feel all grown up probably had them rolling their eyes at you

Caszekey · 23/05/2022 13:08

tantrums and tummyaches galore that'll be the aspartame in the diet drinks...

Rainbowshit · 23/05/2022 13:09

I'd rather my kids had sugar than artificial sweeteners.

Bit weird for some other parent to turn up with a load of cans of juice though.

PixieLaLa · 23/05/2022 13:10

Bloody hell, you sound a right hoot 🤣

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/05/2022 13:11

I wouldn’t want my children drinking the diet versions of soft drinks.

I tend to offer non fizzy soft drinks for kids at parties - they might be full of sugar too but the fizz is bad for the teeth itself, and the sugar is better than aspartame and the like.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/05/2022 13:11

The kids are 10 - I get your angst if they were all toddlers but fizzy drinks at a party for 10 years is pretty normal.

Personally, we only by the diet versions in our house, but I wouldn't pearl clutch if they got the full fat versions at a party.
